To have eaten the prawns?

IamfromBarcelona · 11/01/2022 18:51

Purchased said prawns from Tesco on Saturday evening at around 7pm. The sealed packet was left in the bottom of the shopping bag in a cool kitchen until around 7am Sunday morning, when they went into the fridge.

Today I ate them all (cold) in a salad for dinner.
Tasted fine Smile

Do you think I need to be worried?

YABU- I’ll probably be fine.
YANBU- Prepare to be ill.

Tbh the one time I had off prawns and I knew pretty instantly. About 5 mins into the meal, stomach ache. I was voming within half an hour. I vote you'll be fine if you didn't vom sooner.

Lacedwithgrace · 11/01/2022 21:21

Make sure your phone is charged and you have water bottles in the bathroom OP. Good luck Grin

Can someone, ANYONE, please tell me what human did for the millions of years up to very recently when we started having refridgerators and "use by dates"?

Even our grandparents, great-grandparents lived their whole lives without these things!

I'm in my 60s and when I was growing up there were no sell by dates on meat, cheese, eggs, milk, shellfish, and yet we all managed!

grey12 · 11/01/2022 21:25

@BitcherOfBlakiven

Your body will probably choose violence, tbh. Be prepared not to leave the bathroomZ
Wink probably but if you're too unwell don't be embarrassed to call an ambulance. MIL once had a horrible food poisoning and had to go to the hospital and receive several bags of fluids plus antibiotics plus God knows what Confused

Please tell us you're not pregnant!

Pikaso · 11/01/2022 21:29

You’ve got to be careful with seafood and especially shellfish. I had an awful time in Florida after eating shellfish that was clearly not right (or maybe I’m intolerant to it) but I spent the whole night on the bathroom floor throwing up, sweating profusely and shitting through the eye of a needle. I swear that bathroom needed an industrial deep clean by time I’d finished with it. Felt sorry for the poor maid!

stripeymonster · 11/01/2022 21:34

I've foolishly done similar before and always been ok. The times when I have had food poisoning it's always been mussels cooked in a restaurant. I think you will be fine .

Grida · 11/01/2022 21:34

I wouldn’t take the risk with chicken and seafood but I would put my money on you being fine.

Bought them fresh on the day, kept them in cold larders in largely unheated homes, started rules about only eating them when there's an R in the month, got sick and in some cases, died or lost babies if pregnant.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/01/2022 21:38

@soughsigh

I probably wouldn't have chanced it and I am reasonably relaxed about best before dates. I ate cooked chicken yesterday that had been in the fridge since Friday 🙈

Shameless placemarking for updates 😂

Cooked on Friday, put in the fridge shortly afterwards and eaten on Monday? I wouldn't think twice about that.

Had shorter life expectancy in part because they were sometimes shitting their insides out from eating contaminated food?

8lue8ird · 11/01/2022 21:42

I had terrible food poisoning from prawns years ago so I personally would not have chances it.

ShirleyPhallus · 11/01/2022 21:44

If they were raw I’d think dodgy but as they’re cooked I think you’ll be absolutely fine

Starseeking · 11/01/2022 21:45

I think you'll be fine (I love prawns!).

GertrudeKerfuffle · 11/01/2022 21:49

You've played crustacean roulette OP, only time will tell. Best of luck, do let us know how you get on Grin

Rosewaterblossom · 11/01/2022 21:50

When you say a "cool" kitchen, what is cool in your house? 3 degrees? 15 degrees?

The "danger zone" for pathogenic bacteria is between 5 and 63 degrees with 37 degrees being the "peak" temperature they multiply.

It depends how "cool" your kitchen was? I mean mine is cold without the heating on this time of year whereas some houses are warmer without heating.

PlantBasedPlatypus · 11/01/2022 21:50

I think you will probably be fine but I would ready a make shift bed with rehydration sachets, water, and towels nearby on the bathroom floor just in case.

Seafood poisoning is the worst.

I hope you are OK.

Staryflight445 · 11/01/2022 21:53

‘ They smelt and tasted okay 🤷‍♀️.’

I’ve never understood this mentality. Do you think people who get food poisoning are just idiots for not noticing their food not smelling or tasting right?
It doesn’t have to smell or taste weird for it to make you violently unwell.

Staryflight445 · 11/01/2022 21:55

‘ Can someone, ANYONE, please tell me what human did for the millions of years up to very recently when we started having refridgerators and "use by dates"?’

Certainly wouldn’t be eating prawns unless you lived by the sea that’s for sure.

Exhausteddog · 11/01/2022 21:56

Me either!
Surely the infamous MN chicken that makes 78 meals for strapping 6ft teens and the obligatory 6'2 DH is in the fridge longer than that? Wink

JulieGoods · 11/01/2022 22:01

Good luck OP.

I certainly wouldn't have risked that.

Especially not all the way from Saturday to Tuesday!!

billy1966 · 11/01/2022 22:03

I definitely look at use by dates as a challenge but I wouldn't have chanced that.

🤞for you.

SonicBroom · 11/01/2022 22:07

I ate a pack of smoked salmon that was 10 days out of date by mistake (although had been in fridge) when I was around 35 weeks pregnant Blush. Luckily was fine. I wouldn’t personally have eaten them but hope you’re ok!

IamfromBarcelona · 11/01/2022 22:11

Ooh thanks everyone! 3 hours in, I’m off to bed and feeling okay so far. Here’s hoping I have a tough gut!

OP posts:
DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 11/01/2022 22:18

I would have ate them without a second thought. I do have a cast iron stomach though.

PicturesOfLily · 11/01/2022 22:25

I had awful food poisoning from prawns a few years ago so wouldn’t risk it. My own fault for cooking them in a dish and not reheating leftovers properly. It didn’t kick in for almost 24 hours but then lasted the best part of a week. Fingers crossed for you op!
