I was reading this about a woman’s dress that apparently “fell to pieces” on a night out says she was fat shamed when she complained to the company and they told her she should have “sized up” aibu to think this is not fat shaming?

I think it's a company trying to get away with having to refund for shoddy merchandise.

Not sure if it's fat shaming as she's not fat. But I don't think a person needs to be do they? Just made to feel ashamed of their body is too big.

Svara · 10/01/2022 18:02

They didn't shane her, just told her that she had chosen the incorrect size, there was obviously strain on the material.

AlDanvers · 10/01/2022 18:03

I saw the story. She isn't fat. And she wasn't fat shamed either.

That dress didn't fit her as it should and she probably should have sized up.

She may have felt comfortable in it,but that doesn't mean the dress can stand up to be tightly fitting.

mogkat · 10/01/2022 18:05

I don't think it's fat shaming either. They were just saying that it was a tight fitting dress so maybe you could size up. The same as when things are 'oversized' you might size down.

End of the day it was just a poor quality dress and the company should have just offered her a refund or replacement. Not sure why it was newsworthy.

TracyMosby · 10/01/2022 18:09

It is fat shaming. Just not of only her. All women. In another article I read it says the size she ordered, a medium, and she is usually a 10/12, is the largest size they do in that dress.

Men were approaching me and trying to touch me
This though. Fuck me why are men just so appallingly disgusting.

ChargingBuck · 10/01/2022 18:10

Publicity-seeking bullshit.

The young woman & her friend expect everyone to believe that they went out in December in just their clubwear, with no coats? Or any friends/staff who could lend a coat? Or money for a cab home?

I call hogwash.

ChargingBuck · 10/01/2022 18:11

Not sure why it was newsworthy.

Quite, @mogkat.
She probably contacted the news outlet herself.

Exactly and not to mention that she threatened to go to the media if she didn't get her money back and then did it anyway.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 10/01/2022 18:13

Seventy five quid for that? I'm sure it looked great on her before it self destructed, but it's clearly a few bits of cheap fabric tacked together with some cheap cotton.

BasketBlocks · 10/01/2022 18:13

It’s not fat shaming, nor did they call her fat. Attention seeking shite.

RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 18:14

If they wouldn’t give her her money back she could have done a charge back with her bank rathe than going to the papers, when I was a size 12 it was often labelled as large

It’s not fat shaming

But it’s utterly depressing how the article is worded which is absolutely welcoming “slut shaming” comments. It also isn’t news.

Absolute lol. Have you never been 19 and / or out in Newcastle?! Not wearing a coat is mandatory!
HTH1 · 10/01/2022 18:16

I’m sorry but there is absolutely no way she is a UK size 10-12 (could possibly be in the US) and the dress was far too small for her.

However, the dress seems to have literally disintegrated and to have been made of very flimsy/rippable material so it probably would have fallen apart or at least ripped badly even if she had worn the correct size so it’s good she was refunded.

Are you Southern by any chance? Totally normal for Northern girls to go out to bars and clubs in the depths of winter without coats.
crossstitchingnana · 10/01/2022 18:16

I think it's a hideous dress anyway. Looks like a shiny dishcloth.

Dutchesss · 10/01/2022 18:17

The dress looks like a good fit for her in the 4th picture. It doesn't look like to the dress is being pulled. It looks like it is roomy enough.
Sadly I can fully believe her being harassed on her way home. Much more likely than someone offering a jacket.Sad

XenoBitch · 10/01/2022 18:19

So she threatened to shame the company on social media to get a refund, gets the refund, and then goes to the papers.
Oh, and she was clearly so ashamed about her body being on show, she allowed them to post a photo of her with the disintegrating dress on.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 10/01/2022 18:19

By no stretch of the imagination is the woman fat, so it isn't fat-shaming.

The fault lies with the clothing industry as.a whole. We need standardised sizing preferably expressed as measurements, e.g. waist 71cm/28 inches.

You can't rely on 'size 12' to mean anything, much less 'medium' or 'large'.

In the pictures, it does look rather snug on her so she should take some responsibility for not sending it back and replacing with a size up.

But it shouldn't fall apart to that extent even if it's too small, so I still think it's mainly the manufacturer at fault.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 10/01/2022 18:20

The dress doesn't look tight in the photos from earlier in the evening. The fat-shaming is a red herring. They sold a dress which wasn't up to the job and put a young women in an awful, dangerous situation and then tried to shift the blame onto her.

SituationCritical · 10/01/2022 18:21

Not fat shaming at all. She is beautiful girl, not at all fat but that dress IS too small for her. It's supposed to be loose, so the (shit) material won't have any strain and won't rip. It's supposed to just hang basically. She may be a size 10/12 but she has a larger chest and bum. Same here. It was a piece of crap for £75 though.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 10/01/2022 18:23

What's the best thing to do when you're humiliated?

...tell the papers/media. 🤨

JustWonderingIfYou · 10/01/2022 18:33

Definitely not fat shamed. Nothing to do with her being fat just bigger than the dress.

Would have happened to a size 8 shoehorned themselves into a size 4.

She is clearly not a 10/12 and needed a larger size. The fabric looks fairly delicate and not stretchy.

Normal for up here. I'm in Lancashire and I don't take a coat on a night out. You have to pay for cloakrooms and if you're bar hopping it's a pain. I have been out in snow before with no coat and bare legs the booze warms you up
RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 18:35

I thought she looked bigger than a 10/12 but didn’t want to be accused of fat shaming
