I was reading this about a woman’s dress that apparently “fell to pieces” on a night out says she was fat shamed when she complained to the company and they told her she should have “sized up” aibu to think this is not fat shaming?

I agree it's normal to see young people out and about without coats in the evening. I can also imagine, these days, a total lack of concern from the staff at the club, and failure to offer her a coat or whatever was handy. If I'd been working there I'd have found her something even if it was only the cleaner's spare overall, but I'm a middle-aged woman, probably not the sort of person a trendy bar or club would employ.

HTH1 · 10/01/2022 18:39

@RedCandyApple

I thought she looked bigger than a 10/12 but didn’t want to be accused of fat shaming
Similar size to me, and I’m a (clear) 16.
Walking4You · 10/01/2022 18:42

I don’t think ive e seen a dress in that state before.
Even if the dress was too small for her, I would have expected some seams to go but the whole material everywhere to split like this Shock

SickAndTiredAgain · 10/01/2022 18:43

It looks like a very poorly made dress and the company want to blame the customer for that.

However, suggesting someone needs a bigger size isn’t fat shaming. Someone who wears a size 6 and tries on a size 4 might need a size up, and it wouldn’t be fat shaming for someone to say that (if asked obviously, not a random person on the street).

PurpleRainlnTheSky · 10/01/2022 18:46

I call bullshit. This is a publicity stunt from a fame-hungry nobody who is desperate to be in the limelight.

No way would the dress being 'a bit tight' cause it to fall apart like this. And it didn't look tight anyway!

Also, she is not fat, and she was not fat-shamed.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 10/01/2022 18:47

I thought she looked bigger than a 10/12

But 'size 10/12' has very little meaning any more. I currently have clothes that fit me ranging from size 8 to size 16 - because sizing is completely erratic nowadays.

Azpil · 10/01/2022 18:50

She is clearly overweight and not a size 12.

The dress was also poor quality.

wineandchocolateforthewin · 10/01/2022 18:54

Dress must have been poor quality given hope it ended up but no way did they fat shame her.
Some clothes are unfortunately sized too small, in H&M i have to go up 2 sizes

MrsTimRiggins · 10/01/2022 18:55

It’s obviously not the best made dress in the world, but she clearly isn’t a size 10, especially in a dress which apparently runs small.
The only one I thought was fat shaming, so called, is the lady in the article. Her absolute outrage at being called ‘fat’ due to the implication she is, in fact, not a size 10 was a bit much.

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 10/01/2022 18:57

A size 10/12 looks very different on someone who is 5ft compared to 5’8” so she may very well be that size. Also sizes vary massively from shop to shop.

All irrelevant though. I don’t think she was fat shamed. I do think the store should take some responsibility for the really overpriced, shoddily made dress.

It's impossible to make the dress better unless they used metal wiring The seams are thick, but short, and that's the point as it hangs off!

Back sth like this
sorelleuk.com/collections/dresses/products/tia-chainmail-dress-rose-gold

Price is one thing but she was stupid to wear that dress. Company shouldn't have given her a refund at all.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 10/01/2022 19:09

It looks like something by Primark or one of those shoddy internet dresses from AliExpress that don't resemble the (photoshopped) image 😁

You can probably get away with wearing them if you're a UK 6-8 and even then I'm not sure they'd last past a one or two washes and wears!
Any significant curves above size 8-10 and the style no longer translates - imo it starts to cling unattractively rather than hang/skim. Sizing up probably makes it too loose around the neck and gape around the arms.

Definitely bad manufacturing and poor quality but I don't think the style or construction was suited to her body shape.

I wouldn't have even chanced it when I was much smaller than nowadays! It looks flimsy as hell.

She deserved a refund but I'm not sure about the rest!

CombatBarbie · 10/01/2022 19:19

The article I read on this showed the original modelled dress, it's supposed to be worn loose.... Presumably to stop it breaking. Def not fat shaming, she wanted it to be like a bodycon dress and that's what the company told her.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 10/01/2022 19:19

I had a look at their website and the dresses didn't look great even on the models. I can't believe they charge £75 for them - daylight robbery.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/01/2022 19:37

@ChargingBuck

Publicity-seeking bullshit.

The young woman & her friend expect everyone to believe that they went out in December in just their clubwear, with no coats? Or any friends/staff who could lend a coat? Or money for a cab home?

I call hogwash.

If it was in Newcastle, I could certainly believe it! I’ve seen them out in the depths of midwinter, short skimpy dresses and no coats. A dd was a student there - she said you could always tell in winter who the hardy locals were on a night out.
Tal45 · 10/01/2022 19:43

She looks like a size 16 - definitely not a 10. Still I don't think the dress should have ripped like that because it was a bit small, she could obviously get into it without it looking like she was bursting out of it. It looks like a cheap piece of crap, the sort of junk you get from Pretty little thing, Nasty girl etc
Horrendous that men thought it was ok to grope her, unfortunately it doesn't surprise me.

Suzi888 · 10/01/2022 19:46

@crossstitchingnana

I think it's a hideous dress anyway. Looks like a shiny dishcloth.
🤣^

She’s clearly contacted the press herself… the dress doesn’t look well made at all, it looks flimsy and looks like it’ll fall apart! How did the press get the photos? Hmm

drpet49 · 10/01/2022 19:47

Ha size 10-12v I don’t think so

Clymene · 10/01/2022 19:49

I tell you what is fat shaming. All the women coming in here telling her that she's fat.

What a disgusting thread

tigger1001 · 10/01/2022 19:51

It isn't fat shaming to say she needed a bigger size - you could see that it didn't fit like the one on the model did.

She got a refund then went to the press to say how humiliated she was. Yeah ok then.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 10/01/2022 19:52

100%
RedCandyApple · 10/01/2022 19:58

No one has said she’s fat?! I’m much bigger than her 😂 I just think she looks bigger than a 10-12 which still wouldn’t make her fat, I think she looks more of a 14 if I was guessing if she didn’t want people to comment then why go to the papers? The comments on the Facebook article were much worse

In related news, I set fire to my Christmas tree and now my sofa is all black. I blame the fairy lights for not being bright enough.
