Quite cross

GrannyGoggles · 08/01/2022 15:03

I would like to buy something quite extravagant which I don’t need. I can afford it. Our adult children will enjoy it too. We have room to store it.

I have asked my husband to look at choosing the specification, as a) he’s competent at such things and b) historically if I’ve made such a purchase without consulting it’s resulted in a massive sulk.

His verdict is that we don’t need it, it’s expensive and extravagant.

Unlike the ride on lawnmower that’s awaiting delivery? His most recent 4 wheel drive? The machine that’s on order for ‘our’ (his) business that IMO is entirely unnecessary?

I’m quite cross

Really, really disappointed that it’s a posh barbecue.

TonTonMacoute · 08/01/2022 16:37

Buy it then don’t let him use it!

YesIReallyHave · 08/01/2022 16:38

I love how this quite cross thread is sat next to punch her lights out thread. 😂

MagratLancre · 08/01/2022 16:38

Ooh buy it! Or suggest something even more expensive and then 'compromise' on the one you really want!

Feduperika · 08/01/2022 16:40

If you think you'll use it and can truly afford it then it is a shame he has put a dampener on the plan. But I would struggle to be enthusiastic if my DH suggested this, but maybe if I could be sure he would be the cook frequently enough then I could be persuaded. But I can't fathom a BBQ at this price and 111kg just the egg bit!

girlmom21 · 08/01/2022 16:40

OP is there a more expensive version? Go with that one and tell him it was the highest spec Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/01/2022 16:43

@Dinosauria

You are very unreasonable op, I now really need something that five minutes ago I didn't know existed
Same!
Pawprintpaper · 08/01/2022 16:43

@3luckystars

Is it a puppet show like the one in the Sound of Music
Grin
Mybalconyiscracking · 08/01/2022 16:44

Honestly, thought it was a hot tub.. disappointed!

ArabellaScott · 08/01/2022 16:44

Wishing you happiness with whatever Big Green Egg you decide upon, OP. Smile

Pawprintpaper · 08/01/2022 16:44

I was going to go with pizza oven or kitchenaid

applesandpears33 · 08/01/2022 16:46

Oooooh I've just googled Green Egg. They look fun. If you have enough money and grounds that your DH can justify a ride on lawnmower then I don't see any reason why you shouldn't buy one.

Porcupineintherough · 08/01/2022 16:49

Well he doesn't have to agree with you, and you dont need his approval. My dh admitted I was right about the trampoline after a couple of years...

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/01/2022 16:51

I did not know what a green egg was. I now know, and want one. I too am quite cross..

lljkk · 08/01/2022 16:52

friend got egg-bbq thing a few yrs ago. Cost £600 IIRC. From Ikea IIRC, like this one. She thinks it's marvelous. However, I will point out these things to consider ...

Covid happened & socialising has been limited -- friend is especially cautious about Covid so friend is cooking for self or just one house mate/guest since... 2019?.

It's ruddy heavy. It falls over it will destroy itself. it takes big effort to move around or put in/out of shed.

It's a theft risk nonetheless.

It takes ages to heat up or cool down.

It isn't all that efficient (fuel hungry)

it cooks slowly (compared to a nice indoor cooker or microwave)

The British climate sucks & lots of days aren't suitable for using it outdoors

Friend's patio is small & now the egg vies with a hot tub for space -- both summer items

In constant use every weekend, year round.
@fairislecable -- how? Do you live in GB? Big covered patio maybe?

Haha - I was just thinking exactly the same thing

Me too😂

Buy the egg, the biggest one you can. Cook your husband in it. Problem solved.

RobertsRadio · 08/01/2022 16:56

Oh a BBQ. How disappointing, I was hoping it was going to be a donkey or a herd of alpacas 😀.

ChiefStockingStuffer · 08/01/2022 17:00

Please tell me you at least pointed out the disparity in treatment: he gets extravagant, unnecessary luxuries but you don't need them?

FFS

2022sucksalready · 08/01/2022 17:01

I think he’s worried it will mean he has to cook more often Grin

NutCheeseBag · 08/01/2022 17:04

I’d never heard of a green egg. Now that I’ve googled, I’m afraid I’m with your dh. Sorry.

Noisyprat · 08/01/2022 17:07

What's the dynamic - does he just buy what he wants without consultation but you always 'ask', if so why?

Anyway I bought one of these last year without any consultation with anyone (well the Aldi equivalent - much cheaper). DH was very sceptical and couldn't believe what it cost. However I have to say it's one of our best buys, used it loads! Go on order your egg, it'll make you happy :-)

GoodnightGrandma · 08/01/2022 17:07

I had to Google Green Egg as I assumed it was something from Ann Summers 🥴

GrannyGoggles · 08/01/2022 17:08

We live in the country, lots of outdoor space, love food and cooking (to point of obsession). Have an out door kitchen set up. Will get a wheeled stand so the brute can be moved which was one of the things I wanted to talk over.

The incoming lawnmower will be additional to the one already with us. It will, in ways I do not fully understand, be an invaluable extra resource.

My husband is not a dentist. So no to the exciting sounding leather chair.

Am considered saying I’ve changed my mind, think we should have a hot tub instead

It’s not gas therefore in my book filed under way too much hassle.
