Do you still keep your DVD's?

Every time I read decluttering thread (and I love a good decluttering thread) most of the people will advise you to get rid of your dvd collection.

Although I like nice declutered house, I have no intention of getting rid of my dvd's.

Mostly because it is 80 per cent old classic movied which I adore and there is no place where I can watch them online (at least in my country, it could be different in UK).

So, I'm kepping them in hope that my children will want to watch Hitchcock, Wilder, Wyler, Lang, Minelli and all the rest with me one day (I know, I know... no chance for that). And I prefer them over new movies. Give me Colbert, Davis and Stanwyck any day of the week.

So, if you keep your dvd's what do you have in your collection?
And if you got rid of it, why did you do it and what did you have before.

I have all mine and buy new ones regularly. DD is Deaf and needs subtitles and not all films through Virgin or Prime have them, so we get the DVD. Some I buy because I think she needs to see them (Thelma and Louise and Gone with the wind are two recent examples) We also like a box set and if we particularly love it we buy it so we can rewatch it.

Classics like Fawtly Towers, Lee Evans tours, One Foot in the Grave

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 08/01/2022 12:28

Yes, definitely. They're invaluable when the internet goes out!

Dontknowwhatsnormal · 08/01/2022 12:29

I keep all of mine, I’m really the opposite of a hoarder but for some reason i can’t part with them, my DH reminds me we have no devices at all to watch them on now but there’s definitely a rational reason somewhere deep down that is stopping me getting rid I just can’t seem to find it haha!

Rubyupbeat · 08/01/2022 12:30

Only ones I cant find to download.

freshcarnation · 08/01/2022 12:34

I keep all my dvds. I have about 100 and watch them all. Just got rid of all my cds though.

RumJerrySailorRum · 08/01/2022 12:34

I have a portable DVD player, so I can watch films in the bath, or in bed (I wear glasses and I can't lie down comfortably in them in bed to see the tv)

I like a good rom com, classic old films and I absolutely can not live without my Peter Ustinov Poirot films or Joan Hickson Miss Marple box set.

We also have a touring caravan, you can't always get a decent tv signal or internet so Dvd's are a must.

SurferRona · 08/01/2022 12:34

I keep mine, but store in thin flexi plastic cases, you only need about 30% of the space. Booklets are a bit tricky for DVDs. We have >1000 CDs, storing them in this way has been a revolution! Books fit in there too!

Vanuatu · 08/01/2022 12:39

I have kept them all and still buy new ones. I still have videos and a vhs player although I haven't used this for ages.
Definitely not a hoarder but like to watch my favourites in bed while dh watches crap downstairs Grin

JohannSebastianBach · 08/01/2022 12:42

I just got the Buffy box set for Christmas.

NYnewstart · 08/01/2022 12:42

I’ve taken all the sleeves out and put them in a file with a reference number on them. Then put the actual dvd, in little paper cases that you buy labelled with the same reference number as the sleeve. I have hundreds that now fit in one drawer in numerical order..

If you want to watch a dvd. Flick through the catalogue to select the film then find it in the drawer.

I'm having a clear-out at the moment and found going through a storage box of DVDs and CDs very strange...

They were expensive! We used to show them off, on the bookshelf, to show how interesting we were!

I suppose one reason I was hanging on to them was some weird sense that I needed a record of who I used to be - what if I died and my children wanted a sense of who I was when I was young Grin. I then realised they would never do this!

I tried to use one of the apps where you can scan the barcodes and post them off to sell, but too many were not recognised or rejected.

I then checked the ones where the app did offer more than a few pence. The odd one was actually quite rare, maybe worth £30 if you can't get them at all via Spotify or Netflix & so on.

But they're drowned out by the vast majority being worth so little - the app offering just 10p here, 50p there.

So it's not worth sorting them all, for the sake of the surprisingly rare ones - I have better jobs I could be doing to sort my finances. Oxfam accepts CDs and DVDs so may just pass on the rest to sort and sell.

I've kept mine, but last year I moved them all into dvd binders. They don't have the cases anymore so I managed to get 4 double height stacked shelves to down to 1 shelf with 300+ dvds on. I like the binders as they let you keep the case insert which helps when you look for specific titles.

ElegantlyTouched · 08/01/2022 12:45

I still have my vhs tapes..

suckingonchillidogs · 08/01/2022 12:46

Still have lots - I recently replaced my copy of Silence of the Lambs as the original had got so warped! I don't want to get rid but I am going to try and not buy any more.

grapewine · 08/01/2022 12:48

I keep mine and still buy some. Not everything is on streaming services, and often when it is it disappears again. I have storage that saves space though.

This sounds great. Can I ask where you got the binders from? Thanks
rrhuth · 08/01/2022 12:51

Yes I love them, watching a DVD is much more relaxing than streaming somehow. I keep them in CD folders so they take up very little space.

rrhuth · 08/01/2022 12:52

I got my folders/binders from Argos, nothing special.

Robin233 · 08/01/2022 12:55

I also like a good declutter. But still have my dvds.
I the kitchen I have a tv that long plays dvd......but then again I've not played any for ages. ....

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 08/01/2022 12:57

I love dvds.

I did do a cull of kids stuff- actually put out on our front wall during first lockdown and put a sign out saying "Help yourself" and they all went.

But have kept probably 100s-lots of old classics that you just can't watch otherwise. Things like Desk Set with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy and Bell Book and Candle with Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart. I adore the old films- have all the Hitchcocks etc.

Love them-def not getting rid of them but like the idea of the binder to save space.

Whitefire · 08/01/2022 13:00

Yes have lots here. We have a large kitchen cupboard which we use. We have car dvd players so they are useful for that, also unless you have every streaming device there are lots of films you have no access to. Majority of ours are from charity shops, so not always a huge spend.

XenoBitch · 08/01/2022 13:03

I keep mine. I like to watch the extra content on DVDs that you don't get with streaming services.

SilverontheTree · 08/01/2022 13:05

I had a clear out recently but have kept:
Friends - all seasons
ER - all seasons
West Wing box set
Coupling box set
Tales of the City box set
Victoria Wood box set
Harry Potter and Star Wars all films.
