Do you still keep your DVD's?

Every time I read decluttering thread (and I love a good decluttering thread) most of the people will advise you to get rid of your dvd collection.

Although I like nice declutered house, I have no intention of getting rid of my dvd's.

Mostly because it is 80 per cent old classic movied which I adore and there is no place where I can watch them online (at least in my country, it could be different in UK).

So, I'm kepping them in hope that my children will want to watch Hitchcock, Wilder, Wyler, Lang, Minelli and all the rest with me one day (I know, I know... no chance for that). And I prefer them over new movies. Give me Colbert, Davis and Stanwyck any day of the week.

So, if you keep your dvd's what do you have in your collection?
And if you got rid of it, why did you do it and what did you have before.

not only do I keep them I am actively buying dvd and blue rays, I much prefer them to online stuff.

I am trying to collect all Robert Downey Juniors films on DVD/Bluray but sadly I dont think I can.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 08/01/2022 13:09

Nope. Got rid of them years ago. I haven’t had a player for at least 10yrs

Warblerinwinter · 08/01/2022 13:19

Does it depend on if you are old enough that you once had videos?
We only got videos in my late teens, I was21 before I had my first Tv and in my late 20s before we had a VHS player and straight music CD player. I think once you’ve lived through a few of these media changes you get less attached as you know at some point you’ll have to replace, and if you keep everything from older technologies you’ll be hoarding
I ditched all my DVDs about 2 years ago.

MadeOfStarStuff · 08/01/2022 13:22

Yes I do

Partly out of habit but also things get taken off streaming services regularly so you can’t rely on it being available indefinitely

ApolloandDaphne · 08/01/2022 13:22

My DH is currently sorting all our DVDs into binders in alphabetical order. It is so neat and tidy. He also scanned each one onto an app so we can see quickly what we have. He likes to be organised!

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 08/01/2022 13:24

No. Long gone and also haven’t had a player since one of my kids broke it 7 or so years ago

thegcatsmother · 08/01/2022 13:26

I have both DVDs and CDs and the equipment to play both. Not everything I want to watch can be streamed, and I like the ability to put on an old film if I want to.

Possibly. I’m mid 40’s, so had cassettes, then discs, then mp3/downloads (itunes/Napster etc), then streaming
thegcatsmother · 08/01/2022 13:27

Meant to add, the same with ADs. I like classical music, so have things I want to listen to by particular artists. We still have vinyl too.

furbabymama87 · 08/01/2022 13:27

The vast majority of my DVDs are gone. I only have a couple of box sets and a couple of our favourite films on DVD but they very rarely get watched.

BadLad · 08/01/2022 13:31

We've got all ours. It's rare that we actually watch a DVD but I like to rip them to hard drive so we can put them on tablets.

We have Netflix, but I like the thought that I can always watch my DVDs, whereas Netflix sometimes remove shows I like. Peep show has gone, but fortunately I have the DVDs.

@ApolloandDaphne which app please as this might work for us.

No. I am in my 40s and am only interested in having my complete RDJ collection, I dont buy anything else.

My child is 11 and mad on cars, he buys DVDs based on that, top gear etc his fave film is Le mans 66, he likes them on DVD because he can watch them when ever he likes on the laptop, bluray player, xbox one, ps3 etc. he started asking about Taxi 1, 2 and 3 (the original french films).

skyeisthelimit · 08/01/2022 13:38

I sold a lot on Music Magpie but you only get pence for most of them, and they were all ones where I have now got the film on download. I buy them when they are cheap on Sky.

I still have several dvd's including tv series like Cold Feet, Cracker, Prime Suspect etc, and still have all of my Disney dvd's whether we have the digital version or not.

We rarely watch any dvd's now but I do want to keep the ones that never come onto TV

Bigoldhag · 08/01/2022 13:40

Only two boxsets left here. Got rid of them in stages, with the last leaving about two years ago.

I just don’t have an attachment. I have a lot of streaming subscriptions and will happily digitally rent anything if I need it. My collection was mostly mainstream though.

The only thing I have are two boxsets which are currently selling on ebay. It was a cult tv show that still has a fanbase from the early 2000s, DVDs are only available 2nd hand. I have sold three of them for vastly more than I paid for them, the other two will sell as well. Episodes are all free on youtube by the production company so I see no need to keep.

Escapetothecatshome · 08/01/2022 13:50

I still have loads, the problem with decluttering it can be getting rid of stuff for the sake of it, I always end up re buying something I got rid of to feel clutter free. Turns out I quite like clutter and stuff.
Plus tv is pretty poor in general and its lovely to be able to put on an old dvd.

kavalkada · 08/01/2022 14:04

I still watch mine so they do not collect dust. Just yesterday I have seen Midnight Lace with Doris Day, few days ago documentary Glorious Technicolor from The Adventures of Robin Hood DVD. I watched Bakshi’s The Lord of the Rings with kids during holidays, so they are not sitting forgotten on a shelf.

Even though I have Netflix, Amazon prime, AND use a pirating site (naughty) I still like having DVD/blu rays of films I really love. I feel like a proper ‘fan’ if I have a hard copy.

shouldistop · 08/01/2022 14:07

Yes, ds1 loves choosing a dvd to put on.

RoomOfRequirement · 08/01/2022 14:08

I got rid of all of mine. Most of what I like I can find on one of my 78 streaming services/TV, and I never gravitated to reach for them anyway when there's so much online choice. Plus they take up so much room, it wasn't worth it to me.

purpleme12 · 08/01/2022 14:14

Yes I've still got them!
I bought a storage cabinet specially for them to go in that my TV sits on. I reckon I've got about 200 including my child's

Lacedwithgrace · 08/01/2022 14:27

We've got rid of most of ours. Only keep a few 80s, christmas and kids films because Dd likes putting films on for herself but can't use netflix

Iseeyoulookingatme · 08/01/2022 14:31

Yes I've kept mine. I. Often put one on when there is nothing to watch on TV. I also buy them quite cheaply in charity shops and donate them back if I'm not into the movie. Often I can't find the film I want to watch on Netflix etc. Ds loves dvds to and will watch one before bed most nights.

LittleSF · 08/01/2022 14:37

We have a few but they’re in storage boxes in the attic, not on display since we moved to our new house five years ago. I always had a few kids one’s in a box downstairs in case the Wi-Fi ever went but we’ve just gotten a new TV and got rid of the DVD player then.

I’ll keep the kids ones as they’re useful to bring on holidays where you might not have the best Wi-Fi for streaming but there’s usually a DVD player.
