Do you still keep your DVD's?

Every time I read decluttering thread (and I love a good decluttering thread) most of the people will advise you to get rid of your dvd collection.

Although I like nice declutered house, I have no intention of getting rid of my dvd's.

Mostly because it is 80 per cent old classic movied which I adore and there is no place where I can watch them online (at least in my country, it could be different in UK).

So, I'm kepping them in hope that my children will want to watch Hitchcock, Wilder, Wyler, Lang, Minelli and all the rest with me one day (I know, I know... no chance for that). And I prefer them over new movies. Give me Colbert, Davis and Stanwyck any day of the week.

So, if you keep your dvd's what do you have in your collection?
And if you got rid of it, why did you do it and what did you have before.

@LittleBearPad The app is called Libib

MsAgnesDiPesto · 08/01/2022 15:46

We still have all ours - hundreds of them, often not available on any streaming, going back to when DVD first came out here - including films and lots of TVs comedy.

We still buy occasionally, especially things like Marvel films, as I'm not springing for yet another subscription channel to see them on Disney+. We do watch DVDs fairly regularly. We replaced our player last year at the cost of £22 - very good value, I'd say, for the hours of entertainment it offers us.

Hemingwayscatz · 08/01/2022 15:46

The only films we have on DVD now are ones we can’t find on prime or Netflix, they’re mostly French films I believe. We have around four copies of Amelie because we kept losing it then finding the old copies.

We have four copies of Withnail and I for the same reason!
Redbucket · 08/01/2022 15:54

No, I ripped the ones that I had and put them onto my media pc before I moved a couple of years ago as I cba with boxes just for DVDs and I just use all the streaming services or buy digital copies on amazon for new stuff.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 08/01/2022 16:16

I keep a lot of mine because I love all the BBC period dramas from years ago and they tend not to be available on streaming services. Britbox is getting better but still nothing like what's out on DVD. Also I have stuff like Dallas complete set and Little House on the Prairie, which they never have as streaming box sets.

My hard drive died and I was really glad I'd kept my DVD's and CD's. I did have some of them backed up on an external drive but transferring them takes ages.

Burnt0utMum · 08/01/2022 16:49

Haven't had DVDs for years and don't have any way to play them either. I either use netflix/prime or watch what I have stored on my external hard drive. I prefer not having the physical items taking up space and the ease of being able to choose what to watch without having to get up to put a DVD in, even though I realise how lazy that is!

HeyFloof · 08/01/2022 16:49

I've just bought a DVD case off the back of this thread. I'm going to have a clear out and declutter and get rid of the boxes. 99% are available on Disney+, Netflix etc...but when the Internet goes down, they're a Godsend, so I'd not get rid of them

Feliana · 08/01/2022 16:53

I've got quite a few. Streaming swaps between platforms and sometimes you have to pay extra to watch on top of your subscription. A lot of older/non English language films are hard to find or cost extra. And now that marvel is owned by Disney I'll be keeping all of those too.

PattyPan · 08/01/2022 17:01

I've still got mine that I would want to rewatch, mostly foreign language films, Disney, LOTR, Harry Potter, Star Wars etc. I'm not getting rid of my Disney DVDs and paying Disney ££ in perpetuity to still be able to watch them. We don't have loads though, we have this IKEA cabinet and keep them in the half with the opaque door so they aren't on show and creating visual clutter. Having a fixed storage space also caps the number that we keep without them getting out of control.

MinnieJackson · 08/01/2022 17:33

My son has asd and his latest obsession is dvds and blu rays. He's even buying the same films or series twice if they have different covers. He loves second hand ones luckily. He has a double shelf and then storage boxes, he loves organising them.

Momicrone · 08/01/2022 17:36

No got rid of them along with cds, kept 1 or 2 for sentimental reasons

reluctantbrit · 08/01/2022 17:44

We are a bi-lingual house and lots of the German children movies aren't available on Netflix or Prime so. we have to buy them as DVDs.

Also, we got lots before we moved to Netflix and Disney+, the latter. is not here to stay for us. I think most stay for sentimental reason as DD outgrew them but still gets Beauty and the Beast out when she feels ill.

I also have lots of classical movies I can't find anywhere so no way they go.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/01/2022 17:48

We still have them, DH today has been digging out a few that we haven’t found on Netflix, Amazon or Sky recently.

Propagandalf · 08/01/2022 17:52

If you don't have a DVD or blu-ray collection, what do you put in your TV cabinet instead? It's only decluttering if you have more than a TV cabinet's worth of discs.

itwasntaparty · 08/01/2022 18:42

Got rid ages ago, we don't have a DVD player anymore

Feliana · 08/01/2022 18:45

I guess you open the doors every now and again and enjoy the empty space?

I have got CDs too fwiw. And vinyl (which costs a bomb these days). Not every single one I've ever bought, but some things work better in those formats. Eg I would struggle to find and play the entire La Boheme Freni recording online, or Yvonne Loriod's Messiaen collection, and quite a lot of the old eg 70s, 80s and 90s albums etc were made and mixed to sound good on vinyl specifically. So those formats work with how I like to listen. Other people have different things they're bothered about.

thewhatsit · 08/01/2022 18:49

I don’t even know how I’d watch my old DVDs.

I have an old DVD player in a cupboard somewhere I think but I don’t know how I’d plug it into the TV (on the wall) easily without a major faff.

Last two computers we’ve had haven’t even come with a CD/ DVD drive so I’d be thinking back over 10 years a go to when I was able to just watch them in a laptop..

I’ve got rid of almost all of mine but there are one or two I have kept even though it makes no sense!

thewhatsit · 08/01/2022 18:51

I’m not sure TV cabinets are that standard these days are they? Can’t think of the last one I saw.
OhGiveUp · 08/01/2022 19:00

I still have all mine, along with the DVD player. They're stored in boxes in a cupboard.

Sorka · 08/01/2022 19:03

I keep mine but don’t buy more. I was thinking about getting rid of them but they came in really handy when I moved house and had no tv or internet for a few days. So I keep them just in case I can’t watch anything else.

HelpINeeedSomebody · 08/01/2022 19:08

Got rid of all of mine about 2 years and have never missed them.

InFiveMins · 08/01/2022 19:14

We love DVDs in this house - we have loads of them and they are proudly on display too Grin. We tend to buy them if we've particularly enjoyed a film or a series, and especially if we struggle to find them to watch on platforms like Netflix.

Pippinthepup · 08/01/2022 19:19

Yes I still have mine! I don’t have any streaming services so still watch them a lot!
