My must have feature in a car is having manual windows....having been trapped in an all electric car this is vital. My dh thinks I am mad. Aibu?

Wheels Grin

Winterwoollies · 08/01/2022 16:42

Heated seats, heated steering wheel, manual gearbox and at least 350bhp.

ChocolateCakeYum · 08/01/2022 16:47

A good sized boot, a heated windscreen (a must because it cuts down on it defrosting in icy weather), automatic. I also love rear flex doors (think that’s what they’re called anyway. See pic for what I mean). They open the opposite way to normal car doors and they are amazing for getting kids in and out of vehicles.

If you want manual windows OP Vauxhall still does them in the rear. My corsa had them and then I changed to a Meriva and both had electric windows in the front but manual rear ones.

@Blossomtoes

my dads Land Rover Discovery has this and it's ancient, I think about 2009

Only on MN would a 12 year old car be described as ancient.

This. 😂😂😂😂
Pyewhacket · 08/01/2022 16:51

Manual transmission
Four wheel drive
Proper handbake
air con

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 08/01/2022 16:55

openable only with a key.
proper handbrake.
manual gearbox.
spare wheel in the boot.
steel wheels with trims not alloys.

and only in bright red, non-metallic paint.🚗

Olliesocks · 08/01/2022 16:56

For me, bluetooth and inbuilt satnav. Automatic headlights and I love my heated windscreen.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/01/2022 16:57

Exactly this, my dads Land Rover Discovery has this and it's ancient, I think about 2009.

Ford started fitting them to Fords in 1985.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 08/01/2022 16:57

although I'd be more than happy to own any or all of these.

No idea why anyone would pay for an inbuilt sat nav with its updates-when-manufacturer-feels-like-it (Our last Citroen they thought they'd charge us an annual fee too ...) when you can throw your free copy of Google maps via Android Auto onto your screen and use that.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 08/01/2022 17:06

@etulosba

There is no possible way a 1972 Range Rover had a heated windscreen as an original fitting - that's just nonsense.

That is not what I said, was it? I was making the point that it was obviously fitted before Ford owned Land Rover.

Ford patented QuickClear in 1977. It was a patent covering their particular application of existing technology. Heated windscreens had been automotive use since at least 1964. Many years before that for aeroplanes.

I didn't disagree about the minis - but they were not production cars.

You said Other manufacturers were offering electrically heated windscreens before Ford. Land Rover, for example.

That's not correct - Land Rover didn't fit heated screens before Ford introduced them in 1985.

TangledNemo · 08/01/2022 17:08

I won’t be getting a new car for a while (touch wood) but in my next car, I would like it to be able to fit the car seat I have, have cup holders, a decent sized boot, 5 doors and Bluetooth.

OGenkiDesuKa · 08/01/2022 17:10

Must have:

Bluetooth
Air con
Good heating and demisters
Reversing sensors
I’m happy with Manual or auto.
Big boot, preferably estate size
Leather seats
Isofix

Absolutely. We’ve used our VW satnav about twice because Google Maps is so much better. I have no idea why car manufacturers insist on continuing their proprietary satnav software.

Space
Horse power

backtolifebacktoreality · 08/01/2022 17:23

Speed limiter. I set this all the time after getting a fine for speeding.

Reversing cameras. I don't know why as I've driven for years without them and never had any problem. I think that once you've had them you wouldn't want to be without them in future!

stingofthebutterfly · 08/01/2022 17:24

Reversing camera and sliding rear doors, and if anyone invents a 7 seater with 7 full-sized seats and a large boot, will they please let me know?

HomeEdRocks18 · 08/01/2022 17:24

Deep cup holders, big storage pockets in the doors and a proper cd radio, not a usb or Bluetooth one. 5 doors is better than 3, especially with children

WarmSeaSwimmer · 08/01/2022 17:29

Big boot for 2 large dogs
Automatic for my dodgy knee
Air con for hot summer days
Bluetooth
Sat nav
Phone charging plate
LED lights for dark country lanes
Wing mirrors that auto fold in when parked.
Reversing camera and all round sensors

FORD QUICK CLEAR

Clever marketing from Ford. Other manufacturers were offering electrically heated windscreens before Ford. Land Rover, for example.

Yeah, I've had other cars including a brand new Land Rover & NONE of them work anything like as well as Fords!!

@etulosba

DGRossetti · 08/01/2022 17:37

I have no idea why car manufacturers insist on continuing their proprietary satnav software.

Given the internal combustion engine is well over a century old, they are clearly just keeping the old tech vibe going ? May as well fit a tape deck really. (Or for the super nerdy an 8-track Grin).

JugglingJanuary · 08/01/2022 17:39

@daimbarsatemydogsbone

Incorrect - Land Rover only had them because they (Land Rover) were owned by Ford at the time. Ford was first

It also appears that as Ford's patent has expired they are now offered on VAG (VW Audi Skoda SEAT) cars

Thank you for your comment & your info. I'll keep that in mind when I replace my car!!

heyitsthistle · 08/01/2022 17:40

An engine that works
A handbrake in the centre console
I would love heated seats and steering wheel

user1497207191 · 08/01/2022 17:40

openable only with a key. proper handbrake. manual gearbox. spare wheel in the boot. steel wheels with trims not alloys.

I’ve found my tribe. Agree with all that.
2DogsOnMySofa · 08/01/2022 17:41

Automatic - I do too much driving in traffic for a manual these days
Air con
Power steering
Leather seats - I had dogs and material seats are a no no
