Would you mind someone at your table having an injection whilst sitting there?

  1. Person being injected is not in your party
  2. Not insulin or anything immediately life saving, a vaccination

YANBU- wouldn't mind
YABU- it's gross

It sounds like a similar place we have in my village, with a café in a sheltered accommodation-type place but it's open to the public too exactly this.

This actually changes my answer.

The nurse has to do the person's flu jab and probably complete another 19 other visits before finishing their shift.

In the original scenario, it sounded like a public cafe and as per my earlier post, if someone can go to a public cafe they don't qualify for a housebound visit.

In this situation, as I now understand it, the person is in a cafe attached to their accommodation.

The nurse has a few choices.

  • not do the jab
  • ask the person to return to their living accommodation and drop patients 19 or 20 from the end of the list.
  • risk assess the situation, conclude that the infection risks are no different to the persons home and crack on with the jab.

I personally would do the jab in situ so that the person was protected and I could complete my visits. Others can look away.

How can someone get a vaccine to self administer?

Insulin fine, anything time critical fine. But most insulin users I know prefer to inject in private.

FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman · 08/01/2022 12:17

@Lottieskeeper

I've been an insulin injecting diabetic since I was 10 (29 years) and wouldn't dream of doing my injection in view of other people.

I did when I was a child and made a waitress faint so I learnt not to get the needles out in public again.

Sorry to hear you made a waitress faint! 🙈

My late MIL was diabetic and had to inject a few minutes before eating, she had no qualms injecting at the table - I'd be surprised if anybody else even noticed what she was doing. Pre-prepared pen in her purse, needle attached at the last minute, popped into her tummy under her jumper and the jumper pulled back down. All over in a matter of a few seconds. I knew because I was expecting her to, but I never heard anybody else comment. I wonder if the kit has become smaller and less noticeable in recent years, or she was just really adept at injecting without others noticing, or whether it's become more common so fewer people bat an eyelid?

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

What about paying customers who are uncomfortable with it happening *@WeatherwaxOn*? I would leave and never return if there was a chance people were going to be vaccinated there.
Why though? What would happen to you if someone got a needle stuck in their arm?
NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 08/01/2022 12:37

Ugh no, 20 years ago I had a serious drug problem,I would not appreciate being around needles unless it was life saving.

Cocomarine · 08/01/2022 12:42

I don’t think you were a jobsworth, because you work there and we’re responding to complaints, and in the heat of the moment it isn’t a medical facility.

But I do think the people complaining were wankers.

PearlclutchersInc · 08/01/2022 12:46

We had someone visiting our office giving themselves an insulin injection in a meeting. Although I wasnt offended I was a bit taken aback.

I thought it was a bit inappropriate when we had a perfectly good first aid room (with a sink and soap) available.

Comedycook · 08/01/2022 12:48

It's just grim...and there's loads of things that are unacceptable but pretty harmless to do in a cafe...

I bet you wouldn't put deodorant on in a cafe, or cut your nails, or change your top, wax your moustache or brush your teeth etc.

Why medicalise it though, why not normalise it, its an injection, that's all.

Plenty of normal, non medical things are not appropriate to do in a meeting. Would you get a roll on deodorant out and put it on during the meeting?

nalabae · 08/01/2022 13:05

Not gross just weird

No because you'd need to remove more clothes to put deodorant on, which is not a medical need, but an injection can be done discretely.
Comedycook · 08/01/2022 13:16

No you don't, you can reach through your top as out on deodorant...what about cutting your nails, waxing your upper lip, taking the contraceptive pill... surely you wouldn't do those things in a meeting or cafe? It's inappropriate

RiverSkater · 08/01/2022 13:26

Nurse concerned about getting task done than patient or people around them.

Usually there are questions you ask etc. it's about patient confidentiality too. You don't just stick the needle in and walk away. What if patient had a turn?

I would report them.

Why is taking the contraceptive pill inappropriate in a meeting or cafe? It is just a small pill. If you were coming down with a headache, would you nip to the loo to take a paracetamol?

I wouldn't take paracetamol in a business meeting. I wouldn't think it was appropriate. It's not horrendously inappropriate but I wouldn't do it all the same.

Not in a cafe but in a business meeting.

But regardless, I'm just making the point that there's lots of perfectly ordinary, harmless things we do that are inappropriate in certain circumstances.

I think medical procedures which involve the breaking of skin are very inappropriate in cafes

SlashBeef · 08/01/2022 13:48

I voted yabu but only because it doesn't sound very hygienic. She'd have touched a door handle to get in there and then be unpackaged a needle at the table? No. Yuck.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/01/2022 13:50

Why though? What would happen to you if someone got a needle stuck in their arm?

@WeatherwaxOn I would have a panic attack, start hyperventilating and crying. I may or may not faint. If I was given time to leave I would. I wouldn't sit at a table with someone I knew was going to inject themselves with insulin, I would make alternative arrangements with them but that's a bit hard if some nurse decides to vaccinate someone at the table!

Comedycook · 08/01/2022 13:51

You said it is inappropriate to take the contraceptive pill in a business meeting or cafe

Along with a list of other things...but if we are going to pick the list apart then generally taking a pill is probably ok in cafe but not in a meeting imo.

Hawkins001 · 08/01/2022 13:58

As long as the cafe, has Wi-Fi, good food cheapish drinks and food prices. Then that's all in fussed about, as long as I can eat and drink, hygenically at my table and in safety, that's my main priority.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/01/2022 14:01

I take my pill in the evening so that doesn't affect meetings as I wouldn't be in one at that time. I have however left a meeting to get painkillers, why wouldn't I? I'm not waiting until the end of the meeting to start to feel better.

Eleganz · 08/01/2022 14:03

Having read all your messages (just wish you'd put the detail in your first post OP), the it seems unreasonable as it was a healthcare professional who made the decision to do this in that location despite protests from other customers.

Who owns the cafe?
