Would you mind someone at your table having an injection whilst sitting there?

  1. Person being injected is not in your party
  2. Not insulin or anything immediately life saving, a vaccination

YANBU- wouldn't mind
YABU- it's gross

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake

Wouldn't bother me but I have no phobia of needles - I watch with interest when I'm having a blood test.
I'm exactly the same. In fact the last time I had blood tests the nurse seemed a bit put out that I was watching quite happily while she filled several vials. "I've never had anyone watch before" she said. Grin
TheCanyon · 07/01/2022 20:10

I wouldn't really care, though I'd think it was odd as fuck. Really inappropriate though, plenty folks are squeamish or needle phobic.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2022 20:10

I think it's awful. I'm needle phobic and so would have had to have left as soon as the nurse mentioned it or ended up having a panic attack in the cafe.

I hope someone complains about the nurse for doing that in the first place and also her attitude to the OP.

gogohm · 07/01/2022 20:12

Wouldn't bother me but since when did nurses make house calls unless you are bedbound? Seems rather odd as it's not even flu jab season, that was back in October/November

StoneofDestiny · 07/01/2022 20:14

Would the nurse be happy if random people all brought their takeaway coffee and food to consume in her medical area? I think not.

SleepingStandingUp · 07/01/2022 20:14

If there's adequate space between people so you're not being squashed up etc then I think there's enough room for people to look away. I wouldn't have an issue.

As for you, you were trying to keep everyone happy and we're doing your best, it's unfair she was rude to you

IVbumble · 07/01/2022 20:15

It might be a cafe attached to a housing unit predominately used by residents.

How long might it take the nurse to go to the patients room/apartment to find out they weren't there and then try the cafe.

Imagine how many other patients she will have to squeeze into her shift - she probably hasn't the time to anything other than what she did.

Maybe it would be nice to extend some compassion to someone still working in the catastrophe that we call the NHS.

@MargeSimpson00

It was a flu jab. Patient was in the cafe and nurse came in, told them not to bother getting up they would do it at the table. Other customers complained they didn't want to see that whilst eating
Many years ago a mental health nurse of my acquaintance made a formal complaint about a psychiatrist in her inpatient unit because he came looking for a patient who was having a meal at the time in the dining area of the ward and gave him an injection at the table instead of taking him to a clinical area. Other nurses present when she told this story were aghast, so I assume this was a very unprofessional thing to do. The cafe was presumably fairly clean, but not as clean as you'd expect a GP surgery consulting room to be.
Tal45 · 07/01/2022 20:17

@MargeSimpson00

Might as well tell the full story. I work in the cafe. Often nurses/delivery people/others will pop their head in and ask is mr/mrs X in here before they go knocking. Mr X was indeed there and nurse told him not to worry, she would do it there. Other customers complained so I politely asked the nurse to use a side room (literally 5 metres away). I was called a jobs worth Confused
That was perfectly reasonable of you, lots of people are needle phobic and don't want to see injections being given while they eat. It's definitely gross to people who feel sick at the sight of a needle.

OP I'd complain to the practice or surgery about these nurses coming in and thinking they can give injections anywhere. Totally unprofessional and I'm sure a stop will be put to it. It's private premises and they can't just do whatever they like.

Zilla1 · 07/01/2022 20:18

@gogohm, 'house' visits for house bound, care and nursing homes and some other residential settings and homeless outreach. Less happy when the non-housebound who get out for shopping, visits, bingo and suchlike insist they need a house visit and get rude when declined, especially when we've turned up in the past and the 'housebound' person is out, repeatedly.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 20:19

Does seem an odd time of year for the flu jab.

nitsandwormsdodger · 07/01/2022 20:21

Weird
Flu jabs are given in pharmacy or dr, did she wait in case he had a bad reaction ? What if he had fainted ? Why would a vaccinator come to a cafe not good use of time ?

I definitely wouldn’t want to see that. I wouldn’t want to be the patient in that scenario either. I do think it’s gross.
onedayoranother · 07/01/2022 20:27

It would t bother me but I don't think it's appropriate.
And @Lottieskeeper I'm sure you can figure out a way to do it discreetly- I inject all the time in public and it looks like I'm pointing a pen at my stomach or leg. You can inject through clothes too.

UrsulaBursula · 07/01/2022 20:37

Surely it’s unsanitary having your flu jab prepared on the same table that people are eating lunch?

Zilla1 · 07/01/2022 20:38

@UrsulaBursula wouldn't do it myself but all the 'flu vaccs I've used for years are pre-prepared 'syringes' that require no preparation.

I can smell a jobsworth a mile off but YWNBU OP. Totally reasonable to ask for that to happen away from where people are eating/drinking.
GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 07/01/2022 20:41

I can't imagine a health care professional doing this in a cafe.

Was the person injecting themself? If so, I'd guess insulin. Or heroin.

AnonyMum21 · 07/01/2022 20:41

Wouldn’t bother me personally but I am not squeamish and know many other people are funny about needles.

I do think it’s not appropriate though, and totally agree that you were right to suggest a suitable side room as it was not an emergency.

MargeSimpson00 · 07/01/2022 20:42

I'm not planning on complaining btw, genuinely wanted opinions as to whether I was U asking them to use the side room

My sister would have had a full on fall to the floor panic attack, unexpectedly seeing someone get an injection.

user1471481356 · 07/01/2022 20:44

I’m a nurse so don’t see it as a big deal, it’s a 2 second thing and not offensive. However, because I know there are people with needle phobias, or who just wouldn’t want to see it, I would ask the patient to move to a quieter place, possibly even just in the corridor rather than going back to their apartment.

loopylindi · 07/01/2022 20:46

do you know anything about diabetes and the insulin regime that diabetics use? I have a pen which requires me to inject 15mins before I eat. So by the time I've found a table, sat down, consulted a menu and ordered I've got enough of a time frame to whip out the pen, set it up and inject before the food comes. I do it discretely and have only ever had one comment about it.
