I am starting a new job soon..I need to buy new clothes as not worked for a few years as been a sahm. I was thinking wearing the same outfit everyday. Not the exact same....clean but the same Like a uniform. Is this weird? Does anyone else do this....or AIBU?

My first thoughts are when you see the simpsons wardrobe and they have a load of the same outfit hung up.

Definitely not, it's weird. Work basics are fine like maybe a couple of pencil skirts and maybe 5 or 6 blouses on rotation. But same outfit every day? Very strange

IsDaveThere · 07/01/2022 13:52

I think it is a bit weird. Whilst you will know that you have 5 outfits all exactly the same, your colleagues will probably assume you wear the same one every day as you can't afford new clothes!

Neverunderstood · 07/01/2022 13:53

People will think you don’t wash.

dingdongmerrilyy · 07/01/2022 13:53

Ive not done this but I don't think it's weird. Like u say it'll be clean clothes so not smelly etc so then who cares. And plenty ppl do have to wear a uniform and nobody says anything. If anyone was to make a comment remind them that ur there to work and nothing else and that u do t smell. That should shut up any rude comments if u get any

nosyupnorth · 07/01/2022 13:54

I can understand the temptation but you would be percieved as weird and I don't think it's a good idea.

If you want to avoid having to make an effort with clothes then you could have a handful of set work outfits and call it a capsule wardrobe and be seen as trendy and minimalist, but wearing the exact same outfit daily like a cartoon character would just come across as odd.

Also, even you have multiple identical shirts and wear a clean one everyday people won't know that and will probably think you are just rewearing dirty clothes/haven't changed from the day before.

Overthebow · 07/01/2022 13:54

Would be a bit strange to wear the exact same outfit. Could you buy the same thing in a few colours and mix it up a bit?

Jojobees · 07/01/2022 13:54

I think a staple work wardrobe of 3-5 bottoms ( skirts or trousers) and 3-5 tops is fine. But not the same outfit 5 times over. It will look like you are wearing the same clothes for 5 days.

MatildaTheCat · 07/01/2022 13:54

If it’s identical people might suspect you are wearing the same clothes even if you aren’t. And wearing the exact same outfit could get incredibly boring, especially if your colleagues are wearing interesting clothes.

However as a starting point it’s a perfectly fine idea, just vary the colour of your tops or something to ensure your colleagues don’t suspect you of being a soap dodger!

Butchyrestingface · 07/01/2022 13:54

@Neverunderstood

People will think you don’t wash.
This would be my fear.
Accidentgirlfriend · 07/01/2022 13:55

No people will assume it’s the same actual outfit . A work uniform is easy enough and once you’ve been there a few days Youl see what other people are wearing and you can buy more .

Hotyogahotchoc · 07/01/2022 13:56

I agree it weird, people will assume it's the exact same clothes you are wearing and I would instead go for a couple of sets of trousers / skirts you like and different tops or similar style dresses in a diff colour

LadyCleathStuart · 07/01/2022 13:56

It is very weird. You could have a work wardrobe with some trousers and tops, all similar bit maybe different colours or whatever but not all the same thing.

Belledan1 · 07/01/2022 13:56

Mix and match. Depends if you are going to wear dresses, trousers, skirts etc. When I was in office full time I did wear the same dress twice sometimes but a few days apart as washed and wore mixture of trousers skirts and tops other days.

WorldAtlasOfTea · 07/01/2022 13:57

My boss does this - black trousers and white shirt. But he's male so no one bats an eyelid. Hmm

CrumblyCrimble · 07/01/2022 13:58

It's fine. There have been previous MN thread on this. Lots of people do it and no one notices, or if they do then they're envious of the life hack.

Normski67 · 07/01/2022 13:58

I used to have 6 tops the same but in different colours, and similar style pants in blue, grey and black. I treated it like a uniform.
I wouldn’t have 6 the same though, as people will think you don’t wash.

aliloandabanana · 07/01/2022 13:58

There's someone at my office who does this - I don't know whether she wears exactly the same style of tops/trousers etc every day, but I noticed as soon as I started that she had a kind of uniform for work of black trousers and top with black cardigan. I get the impression she has no interest in clothes and so finds it easier to do this. Nothing wrong with it, but I found it a bit odd as I like wearing different outfits and making an effort, whether it's work or outside of work.

CharlotteRose90 · 07/01/2022 13:59

Do you mean like the same skirt and shirt every day or the same style just in different colours? If it’s the first one then yeah it looks like you don’t wash and don’t make any effort sorry .

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/01/2022 13:59

Setting yourself up with a "work wardrobe" of say, 1x trousers; 1x skirt; 5x tops: 1x jacket; 1x cardigan - fine.

All five tops identical? Weird. People will think it's the actual same top.

Chelsea26 · 07/01/2022 14:00

I wear the same ‘type’ of thing to work every day but not exactly the same, so skinny jeans/trousers, top and heeled boots in winter and summer dress and heeled sandals in summer.

It means I don’t have to think about it but no one noticed, (until I pointed it out in a managing stress workshop and everyone was like “oh yeah, you do wear the same thing everyday!” Grin) I would notice of someone wore the exact same thing everyday, even in different colours

midlifecrash · 07/01/2022 14:01

I don’t think it’s weird, when I find comfortable trousers I might have 3 or 4 pairs, maybe in slightly different colours, and generally have a long sleeve top and cardigan or jacket

Icenii · 07/01/2022 14:01

Same top in different colours?

Cornisharchitect · 07/01/2022 14:01

How about the same item in different colours? Smile

PinkWaferBiscuit · 07/01/2022 14:01

I do similar in that I wear the same 10 or so outfits to work but they are obviously different clothes e.g a striped top and black trousers or a patterned dress.

I really wouldn't suggest wearing the same thing every day as your colleagues will likely think you've just put yesterdays clothes on.

DrManhattan · 07/01/2022 14:01

Get the same outfit but in different colours or pattern
