To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

gosh yes i see your point , ten minutes to half an hour is like such a long long time isnt it ? i mean i cant imagine having to drive for ages like that

When you don't have a car it is!

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 07/01/2022 17:11

if shes anything like me , the sheer stupidity and sheer coldness of people towards a poor dead animal are winding her up no end . i swear if we were actually all in a room discussing this id have literally decked how many people by now and im not joking either

I think you need to have a think about this. 99% of people on the thread have been level headed and sensible.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2022 17:12

the only way to cat proof a garden is to either put barbed wire all around the top of the fences , which im sure the adjoining neighbours might not like or installing rollers all around the top of fences which cost a load of money

We've got netting on top of the fences in our garden similar to that on the Protect a Pet website (DH did it rather than pay a fortune to a company). The neighbours might not like it but I don't really care. My cat, my fence, my cat proofing!

Agree.

It's upsetting to pick up a dead animal. My beloved dog died at home and having to handle his little body was awful. I couldn't blame anyone for not wanting to do this.

I would look to see if there was a collar and tag on the cat so I could let the owners know and at least they wouldn't be living in false hope that their missing cat might come home.

You need to learn to listen to other points of view without resorting to violence.

Horst · 07/01/2022 17:16

You ring the council for dead cats. They scoop them, scan them and if there’s a chip pop then in the freezer/fridge for the owners to collect. No chip or owners don’t care into the incinerator.

no id say the vast majority are a waste of space , i assume you mean by 99 percent the people who have made up a load of reasons why they wouldnt bother and frankly id rather see that lot bite the dust first before any cat if i had a choice about it
Staffy1 · 07/01/2022 17:19

No.

Porcupineintherough · 07/01/2022 17:20

@chaosrabbitland bullshit. It's perfectly possible to cat proof a garden and barbed wire doesnt come into it. What it takes is time and some money and the reality is, most cat owners dont want to do it, they'd rather just replace their "much loved" pet.

MsWalterMitty · 07/01/2022 17:21

@CoastalWave

Wow i'm quite surprised at how many non cat lovers there are!
  1. You'd take it to the vet to be scanned for a chip. Then it can be ruined with its owner.

Why would you all prefer a cat to be left rotting to be eaten by wildlife?? Is that how little people value cats?

I'm not sure the person who posted wasn't the person who hit the cat in the first place.

Cats need to be taken to a vet. Vets do not charge to dispose at all (or they shouldn't) It's worth knowing which local vet can help.

Would everyone who has replied do the same if they found a dead dog?!

Yes. Cats are shit. They shit in my garden. My child steps in that shit. Shit ends up in my house.

I read this as the council take them to the chip shop if there’s one near and put it in the freezer drawer.

curlymom · 07/01/2022 17:23

I love animals and couldn’t leave the poor little thing. And a dignified end would help the owners broken heart. I would cry lots then take it. Saddened to read so many poster not bothered. 😔

Horst · 07/01/2022 17:27

Now that would be a scandal lots of brown envelopes would be changing hands Grin

Shade17 · 07/01/2022 17:30

Keep them off the roads then if you care about them so much!

Porcupineintherough · 07/01/2022 17:30

Your two lovely cats that you allow to take their chances with the traffic? Those two cats that you love so much but wont protect?

lightisnotwhite · 07/01/2022 17:31

@ShaneTheThird

Wow i'm quite surprised at how many non cat lovers there are!

This doesn't make someone a non cat lover. I have 3 indoor cats. I disagree with outdoor cats due to them decimating dwindling wildlife such as voles and shrews which are becoming endangered and are important to the eco system unlike non native domestic moggies. Plus where I am you always see dead cats on roads or Facebook posts of people supposedly crying in shock at finding yet another dead cat on the road. It's bloody devastating to lose a family pet yet people willingly let them out, argue with others about their right to roam and then are shocked when they get killed on the roads or go missing. Pointing this out doesn't make someone hate cats.

Agree with all of this.
Emerald5hamrock · 07/01/2022 17:31

Megan2018 Wow. Take responsibility for your own cat, would you prefer the car to swerve hitting a pedestrian, cat proof the garden, buy a retractable lead like the posh expensive cats have, allowing them to roam with road sense is asking for trouble.
I wouldn't allow my DC roam at night, if I did and they got knocked down by a car, that would be my fault.

Orgasmagorical · 07/01/2022 17:32

I was once in the waiting room at the vets and a man brought in a cat that had been killed on the road. The receptionist said "What do you expect us to do about it?" Shock

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 17:34

I've never had to do it so I've looked at our local Council page and there is indeed a box to report dead animals on the highway so maybe all the people with absolutely no time can spare a tiny 10 seconds to do that when they get home? It says

Dead Animals on the Highway
We aim to remove dead animals such as cats, dogs, foxes and badgers within one hour of receiving notification

XenoBitch · 07/01/2022 17:34

No, I wouldn't. I either walk everywhere or cycle. I also don't carry a load of towels around with me.
If someone says they were too busy to take the cat to the vets, then that does not mean they are a bad person.

VikingOnTheFridge · 07/01/2022 17:35

There is not a chance in hell I'm picking a dead fucking cat up.
