To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

@jimmyhill

You take live cats to the vet. You call the council for dead cats.

Vet don't want your random dead cats!

A vet can scan the microchip and find the owner. They can also check that the animal is in fact dead, and not just unconscious or in a coma.
Porcupineintherough · 07/01/2022 16:50

@Megan2018 has it ever occurred to you to keep your cats away from roads?

Cas112 · 07/01/2022 16:50

Nope

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 16:50

I don't honestly know what our council would do if you rang to report a dead cat, I'm not even sure there's a number.

Medievalist · 07/01/2022 16:51

I did once take a dead pigeon to the vet Blush

I'd picked my dcs up from school and pulled over when I saw an old lady by the side of the road clearly in distress. She was standing over a pigeon which she said needed to go to the vet. I tried to gently tell her it was obviously dead but she got so distressed I ended up driving her, my dcs and the dead pigeon to the local vet. Fortunately the lovely vet's receptionist clocked the situation and said she'd put ithe pigeon somewhere quiet until the vet could check it over. The old lady calmed down, we told her how lovely she was to care so much and I drove her home.

@Megan2018 you need to hide this thread before you get deleted. You need chill

LostMyLastHatfulOfWords · 07/01/2022 16:53

OP those who would do nothing might still be cat-lovers.

Whatever anyone does won't affect the cat (since it is dead).

Finding the owner might be a kindness (to humans) but putting a notice on face-book might be as useful as contacting a vet.

Not so many cats are 'chipped'.

ImFree2doasiwant · 07/01/2022 16:54

I'm a cat lover. I'd move it to the side of the road, knock on a few doors if I could and yes post on Facebook or next door. If I had absolutely nothing else to do, wasnt on my way to school/work, and had appropriate towels in the car I might do the hours round trip to the vets

Or I'd message the lady locally who has a scanner.

SomethingSuss · 07/01/2022 16:54

Oh yeah, I completely agree OP! If you have time to move a dead cat to a grass verge then you've time to take it to a vet. Providing the grass verge we are discussing is outside the vet's office, right?

Sorry but YABU.

well unfortunatly its a bit difficult for us cat owners as although we obviously would like them to stay away from roads sometimes they sadly dont and short of standing at the front door with them on a retractable dogs leash err no theres not a way really to keep them away .
well done for asking a really really dumb question though

yes because of course vets offices are so few and far between , i mean you can literally go for like 100 miles and never see one not ! as well as being cold and souless . are a lot of people commenting on this thread really thick or is it my imagination ?
chipsinonehandpieinother · 07/01/2022 16:58

if you don’t want your cat to be hit by a car then don’t let them roam outside

I think its really cruel to keep a cat indoors all its life. If you can't let your cat roam, don't get a cat.

Its perfectly possible to catproof a garden or make a catio if you don't want to keep a cat as a housecat.....go and google and well done for giving a really dumb answer.

If I wasn't on my way to work yes I'd probably take it but no I wouldn't be late for work to do it.

CovidCorvid · 07/01/2022 17:00

I was on my way to a hospital appt once and dead cat in the middle of the road. I did a u turn and went and picked it up and moved it to the verge. Which was more than anyone else. Nearest vet was ten miles away so no I wasn’t going to the vet.

Megan2018

I've reported your last post. I've not rtft and I'm very sorry your cats were killed but saying you hope someone dies is really unacceptable and frankly disturbing.

Sadly not out of line with the sort thing that gets posted locally to us in connection with any cat death - so I stay out of it.
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 07/01/2022 17:01

I just wouldn't have the time to take a dead animal to the vet, sorry

Cherrytart23 · 07/01/2022 17:04

Think its a bit late to take it the vet. maybe the person posting it thought the owner might see and collect to Bury in the garden.

melj1213 · 07/01/2022 17:04

Is it so difficult to imagine that not everyone lives on top of a vets?

We have one vet office in my town, but the next nearest one is 40 miles away ... if someone hit a cat outside my parents house which is on the edge of town, it would be at least a 10 minute drive to the town centre.

I have friends who live in some little villages nearby and for them it would be at least an half an hour/45 minute drive to the nearest vets.

Not to scan it for a microchip it's not.

"if shes anything like me , the sheer stupidity and sheer coldness of people towards a poor dead animal are winding her up no end"

It is not stupidity though I'd it. People have different viewpoints don't they? Some people are cat lovers and some people seem them as s nuisance who shit in their gardens.

Legally, you you don't have to even report it or take it to the vets so some people won't bother. Most people would think it is courteous to the owner to do so.

Bit like wearing masks really. Some people do it out of courtesy to others and some people don't give a fuck.

gosh yes i see your point , ten minutes to half an hour is like such a long long time isnt it ? i mean i cant imagine having to drive for ages like that
