To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

You're being completely unreasonable suggesting people don't like cats simply because they don't stop to scrape dead ones off the road and drive them round looking for a vet. That's completely and utterly deluded.

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 17:36

I wouldn't allow my DC roam at night, if I did and they got knocked down by a car, that would be my fault

Are we now comparing cats to children? That makes no sense whatsoever.

worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:37

@chaosrabbitland like others have said yours would be house cats if you were that concerned
I don't let my dog off a lead near a road And the reason I won't have a cat as they bugger off and you never know if they are safe
I have had to brake sharply for cats many a times and my dh injured one once as it ran into the side if his car he couldn't stop as not in front
Also cats roaming wild kill birds and otHer wildlife , I wouldn't let my dog do that and catch another animal.
I don't dislike cats but if you have one and it roams you have a chance it may get in a rta or even cause one or it may bugger off elsewhere as they do that too

OurChristmasMiracle · 07/01/2022 17:38

I don’t drive so no I wouldn’t. Moving it out the road and out of sight of children yes but how am I supposed to get a dead cat to a vet?

chaosrabbitland · 07/01/2022 17:38

@Porcupineintherough

Your two lovely cats that you allow to take their chances with the traffic? Those two cats that you love so much but wont protect?
my cats are very protected thank you , , its interesting how you and shade like to deflect from being souless by seeking to blame myself and other cat owners for your own fucking lack of empathy and willingness to go a little bit out of your way to a vets you have no idea how much i look after and protect my cats , and also appear clueless about cats habits and what they are like in general
worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:39

@Sparklingbrook neither does calling people car haters because they won't pick up a dead one of the road and take it to a vets

DroopyClematis · 07/01/2022 17:39

When we rescued our cat from an animal charity , the staff were very strict about how close to a main road we were.
As it was, we live in a very quiet cul de sac, away from a busy road.

Maybe people shouldn't keep cats if they live on or near a busy road then there might be fewer incidents like this.

Or keep them locked up maybe?

Cats are cats. They have barely any recall . If they're outside they go where they please.

No, I'd not take a dead cat on the side of a road to a vet.

TBF loads of this thread makes no sense. And back in RL life is not like this. Well not in my neighborhood anyway, everyone is pretty reasonable.

dudsville · 07/01/2022 17:40

Honestly, before I heard of this on mumsnet I never realised one could take a dead cat to the vets. So I know it now, but I didn't for the first 50 years of my life. It's not that I didn't value a cat's life, I just assumed they were the same as all the wildlife that get killed in roads - that the council does something about it.

worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:41

@chaosrabbitland what shit in peoples gardens and don't say they bury it as they all don't
And some do kill birds and thingsmy friends one has brought in all sorts and they don't kill to eat even
Its not heartless to not pick up a dead animal and put it in your car and drive to vets and make your dc late for school or yourself or be too squeamish to actually pick up a cat.
I would report a dead cat but no way im picking it up and going to vets and just chucking it in amongst the kids in the car

AnnaSW1 · 07/01/2022 17:43

No chance would I take a dead cat to the vet

OP probably thinks you should get on the bus with it.

and id be even more concerned trapping cats inside , its cruel , they naturally do want to go outside and check their territory , only a few cats will accept it , although mine are inside mostly and only go out first thing in morning and then for a ten minute burst or two in the evening , they are both getting older and slowing down anyway .

more than one episode of cat from hell was the result of a cat the was wrecking its owners house to shreds and displaying behabioural problems because its owners kept it indoors 24/7

@Porcupineintherough

I love my cats. But they were roamers and they do go out. I would be selfish to keep them in. It's not what they want. We don't live near any main roads though
Emerald5hamrock · 07/01/2022 17:45

Are we now comparing cats to children? That makes no sense whatsoever.
No however if I wanted to keep my much loved pet safe then I wouldn't allow it roam freely and then wish death on humanity if my pet was knocked down.

worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:45

@Sparklingbrook where i live I reckon we have at least one post a week where someone posts on facebook that dead cat has been found , very rarely does someone take to a vet
Also need to remember vets open 9-5 mon fri many of them.
They do report on facebook though and sometimes cover it and there is a lady who scans them locally or lost ones ( often not microchipped it seems) sometimes even owner will respond and thanks them - no one shouts why didn't you take it to a vet
I would not take a dead cat to a vet an injured one yes

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2022 17:45

OP has only posted twice on the thread and now we're on page 10. Confused

worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:48

@chaosrabbitland but then chance you take if they roam, you can get cat fences for gardens now and for some people who live rural its not so bad
Im in a town down our road lots of cats and busy roads and couple of them never seem to be in , out in all weathers , one trys to come in my house im sure its owners only let it in to eat , then chuck it out again thats not fair either

5keletor · 07/01/2022 17:48

No, I wouldn't pick a dead cat up off the road, neither to put it at the side of the road nor to take it to a vet. I admit I don't like cats at all, although I wouldn't harm one and take care if cats are wandering about near my car when I'm driving off. I would report it though, I didn't know that was possible so will bear in mind if I do see a dead cat on the road in future.

Lovelydovey · 07/01/2022 17:48

I wouldn’t take it to a vets, unless it was me that hit it. I’d struggle to even move it. I don’t like animals - dead or alive - and choose not to have one. I don’t think anyone else has a responsibility to your pet, that you selfishly choose to let roam free. I wouldn’t even know where our nearest vet is, though could google.

Here, there's about the same, one a week/fortnight and they usually say 'taken to

PomegranateQueen · 07/01/2022 17:49

Is if possible that the person was a pedestrian? I dont drive so I would probably do the same as the person in the OP and move it to the side. No way would I walk to the nearest vet carrying a dead cat and possibly have to replace bloody clothes.

Not everyone can afford to take the morning off work to take something already dead to the vet. They may also be worried that they would get charged by the vet, who would they charge in this situation if the owner cant be found?

PomegranateQueen · 07/01/2022 17:50

*Is it possible

worriedatthemoment · 07/01/2022 17:54

@Sparklingbrook we have a chain vets open but they aren't so accommodating at taking dead animals, every area is different
We have a lady that goes and scans them all and i think poss removes , not sure if something to do with cats protection
But seems a lot get run over or go missing or a lot of people have cats around here
I still would not take a dead cat or dog ( unless my own) to a vet though as I personally could not pick up a dead animal , report yet and injured animal again yes , i have reported injured fox to rspca etc as poor thing back legs had gone and didn't want to see it suffer and i do report deAd badgers to county council as they remove them if they are a hazard etc

BadNomad · 07/01/2022 17:55

If I have the time I do pick up dead cats from the side of the road (that someone else has kindly moved out of the main road so they don't get smooshed) and take them to the most local vet to be scanned. If no chip is found then the practice keeps them in the freezer for a week to give the owner a chance to find them. Descriptions are posted on the vets own FB page or on local "lost & found" groups. It's very common. I guess people around here have more compassion for pets and their families.
