To think you take a killed cat to the vets, not dump it on a grass verge

Post on FB says 'Found' a dead cat in the middle of the road. Couldn't do anything other than move it to the side as I was busy. " Posted the FB update five hours after doing this.

Cat had been moved about 4m from the road so quite a distance and was hidden from site (not quite sure even how they'd moved him the state he was in)

Poor thing was in a really bad way. I had to put my big girl pants on and take a lot of deep breaths before I dealt with him. I took clean towels and gave him a dignified trip to the vets.

No, I don't like picking up dead cats - particularly after losing one myself to an RTA. But AIBU to think that if you've got time to shift the cat, you've got time to take it to the vets to be scanned?? Or did they move it because they were the ones who killed it?!

Would you stop to take a deceased cat to the vets?

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 08/01/2022 02:15

@multivac mine used to use the zebra crossing
I wish I was joking Blush
He survived 4/5 years by himself so he is very traffic aware which seems to be "stay away from any moving things", but he doesn't go anywhere now except my neighbours garden

Furries · 08/01/2022 03:11

@lljkk

I know people who collect fresh roadkill to make into pies. Waste not Want not.
Seriously. Why do people post goady shit like this. Am reporting.
Furries · 08/01/2022 03:26

I made it to page 20 and have stopped.

I do understand why some people don’t like cats. And that is their prerogative.

What i don’t understand is that, for some weird reason, it’s one of the only topics on this site where people can be openly vile, goady, jokey, etc.

So many people posting “ha ha,” comments, I completely understand those who, rightly, say that it’s not safe or I can’t afford the time - that’s bloody normal. But those making “jokes” about roadkill are just gross.

As I said, cats seem to be fair game on this board. Not just this thread - I’ve seen plenty of posts on multiple threads where mocking is perfectly acceptable.

Voice your dislike in a rationale way - fair enough. Post some of the vile and pointless responses I’ve seen - I don’t think there’s anything that can change your mind re how you feel about cats. But maybe, just maybe, think about how your “oh so funny” comments impact on those who DO care about them.

Furries · 08/01/2022 03:29

@negomi90

I don't have pets. I wouldn't know where my local vet is, or what the procedures are. Also how would you know its the right vet? Cats travel far. Moving a cat so it wouldn't get trampled on, I could do.
You don’t need the “right” vet. All vets have scanners for microchips. It’s not about reviving a dead cat. It’s a our scanning it to find the owner so that they can be notified that their cat is deceased.
whitewashing · 08/01/2022 05:55

I’m terrified of cats. I wouldn’t touch a live one far less a dead one. YABU.

Patapouf · 08/01/2022 06:38

I wouldn't be touching a dead cat and I certainly wouldn't be putting one in my car.

Cat or animal lovers won't like to hear this but a dead cat in the road is no different to any other roadkill to most people. I understand that to whoever has lost their beloved pet it will be very painful but I wouldn't stop and move a badger or fox so why would I touch any other dead creature.

I wouldn't post on fb either though because that's attention seeking.

Flutterflybutterby · 08/01/2022 06:44

I'm sorry, but there isn't a chance I'd stop and take a dead cat to the vet!

Flutterflybutterby · 08/01/2022 06:46

I also love cats! But I just don't want to be dealing with a dead anything.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/01/2022 07:01

@CoastalWave

It's not true that all councils "just bin" the body. I found a dead cat in my street. Council was contacted.

I went on holiday, when I came back there were "lost cat" notices up. I called the number and the owner informed me that by this time the council had been in touch to let her know what had happened.

She was grateful that I'd called. So no. I'd still ( in my area) not take a dead cat to the vet. I'd call the council who scan it and inform the owner.

pompomsgalore · 08/01/2022 07:06

I am a cat lover and along time cat owner.

I have moved a cat to verge. It was already dead when I came across it but didn't want to leave it in the middle of the road.

I would only take it to the vet if it was injured when I found it (and have done this) or if I'd hit it myself.

Firesidefox · 08/01/2022 07:07

I wouldn't take it to the vet. They can't do anything.

chaosrabbitland · 08/01/2022 07:53

@Ionlydomassiveones

“and why would i need therapy ? because i happen to hold animals in a slightly higher regard than other humans , and by and large i tend to not like a lot of people in general , but i always like all animals , and it was just that a comparison btw , its funny how serious everybodys taking it and assuming im mentally ill lol”

Yep somebody who values animal life above humans has a worrying set of priorities. You might want to think about therapy and reflect on your inability to connect with other people. I hate to break it to you but cats don’t really give a shit about you - you’re just the dinner lady.

i feel quite happy with my priorites , iv got no desire to waste money on therapy to connect with other people , i dont have an inability to connect with them , i just dont bloody want to frankly , and yes some cats are quite fickle its true and will happily decamp to another house where the food or whatever is better , hence why everyone assumes they arent loyal , but thats not every cat though , its generalising , our cats are very centered to us , ,if im ill and bed bound my cat does not leave me , he will sleep on my pillow above my head and wont move , he sleeps on my pillow most nights anyways , hes always around me wanting his fusses , his idea of going out these days is ten mins out the front and then back in to start bothering me for his fusses and cuddles .
comfortablyfrumpy · 08/01/2022 07:56

@Firesidefox

I wouldn't take it to the vet. They can't do anything.
The ones round me are very helpful and will scan and try to let the owner know.

It's horrible for the owner, but it does mean they aren't still searching in vain.

GlamorousHeifer · 08/01/2022 08:11

I have 2 cats, I love them. I would not be taking a dead cat to the vets..... most people I know don't have enough hours in the day for this kind of thing.

londonrach · 08/01/2022 08:26

No. Yabu. Time and worry re vet fees. The person done alot to move the cat and inform Facebook local pages

Anotherbrokenairer · 08/01/2022 08:33

@MintJulia

What do you expect a vet to do? It's dead.

I'd put it in a ditch where children couldn't see it . The local wildlife would 'dispose' of it within a couple of hours.

@MintJulia Haven't rtft yet but this is the vilest thing I've read on Mumsnet. Disgusting
PinkSyCo · 08/01/2022 08:37

No. Why would I?

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 08/01/2022 08:49

I saw one run over, god it was absolutely awful I cried my eyes out. There was a lady who also saw it who took it to the vets to be scanned but I was on my way into work to teach. If I'd rang and said I was going to be late for my class cos was taking a dead cat to the vets it wouldn't have gone down well.

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2022 09:44

@Firesidefox

I wouldn't take it to the vet. They can't do anything.
They can scan it for a chip and notify the owners.
MintJulia · 08/01/2022 09:47

@anotherbrokenairer I'm genuinely puzzled by that. Moving it to ensure children don't have to see it seems sensible to me.
I'm sorry if I offended you.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 08/01/2022 09:48

No, I wouldn't take a random dead cat to the vet

User2638483 · 08/01/2022 09:50

Genuine question, does the vet want you to bring dead cats to them? I assume it’s so they can scan the micro chip? But do they mind?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/01/2022 09:57

I wouldn't post on fb either though because that's attention seeking.

Don’t be ridiculous. What’s attention seeking about posting there’s a dead cat on such and such road and giving a description?

I'd put it in a ditch where children couldn't see it . The local wildlife would 'dispose' of it within a couple of hours.

Never mind the owners not knowing what happened to their cat as long as the children aren’t upset. Horrible attitude.

Porcupineintherough · 08/01/2022 10:03

Oh of course theyll know what's happened to it if it fails to show up @PinkSparklyPussyCat. It doesnt take much imagination or guesswork, does it?

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2022 10:09

@Porcupineintherough

Oh of course theyll know what's happened to it if it fails to show up *@PinkSparklyPussyCat*. It doesnt take much imagination or guesswork, does it?
Could be trapped in someone’s garage. Could have got into a van, could have been stolen?
