Reading that smh article makes it all sound even dodgier to me.

So the Aus Department of Home Affairs received the Temporary visa application on Nov 18th and it was approved on the same date. The proposer was Tennis Australia Ltd. The document does say subject to the conditions etc (presumably that includes vaccine exemption proof) and you should check your documents before flying etc).

But the only medical exemption letter from Tennis Australia that I can see there is dated 30th Dec.

Which suggests to me that Tennis Australia and Djokovic were determined that the player would be at the AO and applied for a visa knowing full well that at the time of application he wouldn't have qualified for an exemption. And so it's quite likely that the whole covid test stuff is a fabrication.

Somebody should be investigating Tennis Australia and their role in all this. I'm hoping the reason that the Aus government are taking a while to decide on the case is because they are investigating thoroughly before they kick Djokovic out.

Can anyone explain what is going on at this press conference? They seem a tight knit teflon family. Is that his mum? What are they singing? I don't know whether to be impressed or scared at this display of self confidence.

Roussette · 12/01/2022 15:49

His family consider him a deity or a demi god.

They sang some sort of uniting song, his father talks about him like he is the second coming.

I just find it pathetic saying he didn't want to disappoint the journalist which is why he attended a photoshoot whilst knowing he had covid. Like he would worry about that! He could've just rescheduled.

BoredZelda · 12/01/2022 16:07

I always thought Australians had low tolerance for bellends?

Even Australia can’t legislate not to let bellends in.

The only question is, does he have the correct paperwork to be allowed to stay and compete? Whether he did something last week or last year that you don’t like is irrelevant.

People keep saying the same rules should apply to all, but it seems what they really mean is, different rules should apply to him because they don’t like his attitude to covid.

Chulainn · 12/01/2022 16:09

He's coming across as incredibly arrogant and entitled. Whilst someone else might have completed the visa application, it's his document and he needs to take responsibility for it. The buck stops with him.

I don't know the implications of admitting he had travelled elsewhere with the 14 day time period but if there are some, maybe this was a calculated 'mistake'. ND would never have thought his movements would be so closely monitored and his documents made public so he would have been confident he'd get away with it.

WhatTahw · 12/01/2022 16:23

Standing up in front of the global media and showing such confidence Shock The song was decisively weird but the whole scene a bit striking. So odd!

Yes I agree with this.

No I don't think so. It's up to him whether he chooses to vaccinate or not but that decision has consequences. He is trying to get around the rules and is making a shockingly bad job of it. I'd have had a lot more respect for him if he'd accepted that being unvaccinated made him ineligible to travel and compete in the AO.

@Sausagesandroses

How many of you are saying teamAustralia who did not dislike Djokovic in the first place? Right or wrong the amount of vitriol and plain gleeful malice he is receiving in Western and Anglo Saxon media in particular is sad to see and makes one wonder…certainly the WASP elite in Australia are not renowned for their love of the Balkans.
Before this week I hadn't even heard of the wretched man, not being a fan of tennis.

What I have seen of his recorded behaviour since early December means that I think him a rather unreliable person with a talent for one particular sport, and a general way of looking at things which is "I am a god because I am good at tennis; the rest of you little unimportant people may have to follow rules, but I don't."

Not very endearing, on the whole.

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 12/01/2022 18:01

That's not the only question. If he's proven to have lied to obtain that paperwork, then he is also not entitled to the visa.

Chulainn · 12/01/2022 18:07

I thought he confirmed in his affidavit that he was tested and received confirmation of testing positive on 16th December. Both the tests and the result were the same day. Now he's saying he only found out on the 17th. I think Djokovic has lied from the start. He didn't think he'd get caught out. Instead of telling the truth now he's admitting to just enough in the hope it goes away. However, what he's doing is actually dragging it out as it raises more questions as nothing is stacking up. Because of his statement today, it now looks like he lied on affidavit, a serious offence.

Whoever is advising him is doing a dreadful job or he's ignoring their advice. It's like he realised the optics of exposing children to covid was dreadful so changed the timeline on when he got the result, forgetting that timeline no longer matched the affidavit. There's no consistency in anything he says and now everything he says comes across as a lie.

If he has any chance to get his reputation back, he should be completely honest including why he's lied or 'misrepresented' the facts, even if that means admitting he faked the covid result or exposed kids to covid. We're all thinking it so him verbalising it will stop more speculation.

It is relevant though. If he was asked if he travelled in the 14 days prior to his departure to Australia and he lied then it is very relevant.

His visa application was based on the time prior to leaving for Australia ie having a positive test then his behaviour is very relevant. As it is causing doubt on the validity of the positive test and once again asking if he lied to get into the country.

I have always been a fan, and almost felt a bit sorry for him as so many people disliked him. However, I have now joined their ranks. I couldn't care less if someone is the "best" at anything, and I certainly couldn't care less where they come from - but I do care about how they conduct themselves.

StartupRepair · 12/01/2022 20:24

The Australian government has no moral compass. Our Prime Minister is like a stupid version of Boris. They will deport or keep Novak depending on which action they believe will get them more votes in the upcoming election.
The tournament draw is in a few hours so a decision needs to come soon.

I'd heard of him but didn't give a hoot either way.
milkyaqua · 12/01/2022 23:47

I think the problem is that every time some new bit of shit comes out which shows Novax in an even poorer light/indicates lies or rule-flouting, his legal team dump another multi-page document on the department who are reviewing his visa. This has to be gone over with a fine-tooth comb; and it has to be weighed up whether the costs of fighting another court case against him, when he inevitably resists deportation orders, is worth another half million dollars, etc.

StartupRepair · 13/01/2022 00:06

Spanish government now investigating how he got into Spain unvaccinated.

If Hawke does make a decision to deport the Serbian tennis star, his lawyers will probably file an injunction against the decision.
If the Federal Circuit Court can’t sit tomorrow, this would mean the court process could drag on until next week (when the Australian Open is due to begin).
It is unclear whether Djokovic would be forced back into immigration detention immediately if he no longer has a visa. But this would likely be the case unless he promises to get on the next flight home.
Either way, the story is far from over.

errnerrcallnernnernnern · 13/01/2022 02:23

‘My agent ticked the wrong box’ or whatever should never be a legitimate excuse.

RantyAunty · 13/01/2022 03:58

All this could have been avoided if he'd stop being a tit and gotten the jabs like everyone else.

If he gets to play, he'll certainly be booed and perhaps an angry mob.

user1471447863 · 13/01/2022 12:21

When you tell a lie you often have to tell a 2nd lie to cover a hole in the first lie. Then a third to fix the 2nd and then it snowballs. Particularly when it is a story that interests other who will start digging for the truth.

Starting to look very much like this for novac now.

Additionally he is an ambassador for his sport. Is is encumberant upon him to set a good example for all the young upcoming players who look up to him and not to bring the sport into disrepute either.
He should be uninvited from the tournament regardless of being deported.

Ghislainedefeligonde · 13/01/2022 12:34

The stuff about Spain is interesting as I know they are very strict on showing covid passport eg before going into cafe so I don’t see how he was allowed into the country, esp if he was still supposed to be isolating from his apparent covid infection. Seems somewhat suss to me!

Rainbunny · 13/01/2022 13:32

In the Australian media today an inside source from the Liberal party (the PM's party) said that the government was leaning towards cancelling his visa. If so it will likely happen by the end of the week. I hope it's true.

The longer this has gone on the more his manipulations and mistruths are being exposed. If they let him stay he will have made fools of the government and shown conclusively that yes, one selfish foreign visitor can scoff at the laws of a country when Australians themselves can't.

VelvetChairGirl · 13/01/2022 13:44

Australia is being unreasonable, just make him quarantine for a week, we cant keep up this shit forever, everyone knows we are going to live with it.

Roussette · 13/01/2022 15:12

So agree with this. A few days ago when he was holed up in the immigration hotel, a news prog interviewed Martina Navratiova. My god, she was so on the money with her observations.

She obviously has a huge amount of respect for Novak as a supreme athlete and top of his game, that much was obvious. But she said how... when you are in that position (like she was, being no.1 woman at one point) you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders whether you like it or not. And that responsibility is to the fans, other players, the trainers, the team, the TV viewers, the tournament people and so on... you have to set an example and he, unfortunately, hasn't.

Totally spot on. She was measured and thoughtful in what she said.
