Novax Djokovic is a narcissist who thinks his position makes him impervious to rules, rather than a role model.

I hope the Aussie crowds moon him if he plays.

YellowMonday · 11/01/2022 09:17

Australian here. I'm furious, and if the allegations are true (questions on legitimacy of covid test, travelling pre Aus), I hope our immigration minister uses his power to deport Novax.

For those asking about the crowds, I actually expect numbers to be way down - lots of us in Melbourne are essentially in a self imposed lockdown with our current wave.

There is a LOT of discussions and planning of groups who want to either boo (which I don't agree with) or massively cheer on Novax's opponent (which I do agree with).

Novax has never been popular in Australia, and given his vax stance, covid behaviour, and court case cost to taxpayers, he is not liked and now not respected.

Have you ever seen Wimbledon? If Novak were affected by the childish shite you describe, he'd never have won anything.

My family in Australia feel the same.

One of them also pointed out the government has now spent taxpayer money on this court case. What a waste - unless they use their legal power to cancel the visa.

As aside, apparently Djokovic's lawyers don't allow entry to their offices unless vaccinated.

GabriellaMontez · 11/01/2022 09:26

The fuck he did. Or they'd have bounced him back out.

Chulainn · 11/01/2022 09:30

I think ND is so tone deaf he isn't aware of how damaging this is to his reputation. He's never been as popular as Nadal or Federer, something which has bothered him. He's actually got visibly annoyed with the crowd when they don't support him at times. Some of the comments on his tweet yesterday were brutal while others were completely supportive. For reputational damage limitation, withdrawing would be the best option.

He's been outed as a liar on his visa application only through having to submit the documents to court. He'd have got away with that otherwise. The argument about how the Australians treat refugees (which are horrendous and I feel for all refugees in that scenario) shouldn't be used to detract from the fact that an incredibly wealthy and powerful (in Serbia and on ATP tour at the least) man has lied to get around Australian visa rules. He either lied about having covid to get a medical intervention or went out unmasked and attended events, potentially spreading covid to others, contravening Serbian law. He lied on his visa application about travel.

For all those who support him, do you think you'd be allowed to get into Australia if you lied on your visa application? I doubt I would.

I read one ATP player (he played him in 1/4 finals in Wimbledon or FO) has spoken out to say ND shouldn't play and that he doubts he's the only player to think that.

He is affected by it. He has been seen to get visibly irritated and mocking towards crowds who don't support him. However, he seems to use it to spur himself on so continues winning. However, it does affect him. You only have to look at his reaction to the crowd chanting his name after he lost the US Open last year to see how much that meant to him. I think he'll be very affected emotionally if the crowds boo him next week. I don't think it will stop him winning though but he seems to hate that he's as good as Nadal and Federer yet doesn't command the same 'love' that they do. If he gets booed, it's his own fault this time round.
SirChenjins · 11/01/2022 09:45

The lolz at the idea ND doesn't get affected by the crowd's reaction. That doesn't stop him winning (obviously), but he's certainly rattled by the refusal of many to acknowledge his self perceived demi-god status.

Eleganz · 11/01/2022 10:03

I personally doubt the Aussies will stop at a bit of booing here. There could be some significant protests. I just hope Aus gov and Tennis Australia realise that the whole open could be severely disrupted by allowing Djokovic to play.

Eleganz · 11/01/2022 10:06

@GabriellaMontez

Nothing to do with rules now (which he clearly hasn't followed), this is a political decision. If it wasn't high profile Djokovic would already be on a plane.

If the heat gets turned up further on Morrison then they wil boot him out. I suspect they are somehow hoping he will realise himself that most Australians don't want him there and pull out himself, but that doesn't seem to be Djokovic's style.

Blackbird2020 · 11/01/2022 10:17

Unless Scomo can think of a bullet-proof excuse as to why he cannot remove this guy from Oz, allowing him to stay, play & potentially win the AO could be Kryptonite for Scomo’s re-election chances.

My bet is that they are taking their time to cross the Ts and dot the Is before cancelling his visa. They won’t want a repeat of yesterday…

Blackbird2020 · 11/01/2022 10:22

The irony is it was probably intervention from Scomo, playing the ‘strong man’ to Australian sentiments, that stopped ND at the border. Other players and support team had already got in on the same visas/exemptions…

I wonder if he’s regretting it now Wink

PlanktonsComputerWife · 11/01/2022 10:26

He doesn't get affected in the sense that it doesn't stop him winning. I suppose if the Australians really want him to win, they can organise booing brigades. 🤷‍♀️

He's like the brilliant Scottish darts player Peter Wright who recently visibly channelled some foolish crowd hostility at the Ally Pally into a really stunning victory in the World Darts Championship final.

I really admire sportsmen and women who refuse to fold like that.

tigger1001 · 11/01/2022 10:41

"As for 'enjoying unsettling the other players'. What is this based on? I think your personal dislike of the man comes through here."

That is very much his game style though. He's done it for a number of years and is widely discussed. He uses medical time outs to disrupt his opponents, especially when down in the game. It's incredibly bad sportsmanship and given his talent also unnecessary.

Roussette · 11/01/2022 10:48

I have tried to like him, I really have, because I admire such superb sportsmen... but he is just a tad unlikeable to me and this really hasn't helped.

His family did him no favours either. He may have won a battle but he won no one over with his Mum and Dad talking about him like he is some sort of deity.
He isn't. He is a person with talent who has worked hard. There's lots around.

Rainbunny · 11/01/2022 11:30

At this point I think the politics are becoming stonger than doing the right thing so I'm guessing he'll stay and compete. I'll be cheering on every opponent to beat him!

My take on this is that I don't believe he genuinely caught Covid in December. I think he somehow got hold of a convenient positive pcr test.

He's a hardcore anti-vaxxer and he's been completely silent for months when he's been asked about playing in the Australian Open. He desperately wants to win more grand slam titles but he has the problem of getting into Australia unvaccinated, suddenly a extremely fortuitous diagnosis of Covid occurs at the 11th hour! The timing is just too convenient.

Also sports reporters have been commenting that the QR code for his positive test result shows a negative result when they scan it but if they scan it again it shows positive. When they keep on scanning it, they keep getting a mix of negative results and positive results, which in light of the surrounding circumstances is very strange.

YellowMonday · 11/01/2022 11:34

It would be ironic if he catches covid - it's everywhere here in Melbourne - and has to withdraw.

He would probably insist on still playing. He is God/superhuman after all 🙄
Rainbunny · 11/01/2022 11:40

I've never cared for ND and it's easy to dismiss his silly views as harmless but he's not the nice guy he projects himself as being, as was explained in a Times article yesterday, to quote:

"Djokovic has been vocal about his fascination with the late Serbian far-right pseudo-historian and conspiracy theorist Jovan Deretic, whose books on Serbian “race and people” have been a staple of Serbian nationalist press for decades.

After the Serbian national team won the ATP Cup in 2020, Djokovic sang nationalist songs, including Vidovdan which marks massacres committed by Serbian units during Yugoslav wars. Only last year again, Djokovic was also pictured sitting next to a former commander of a military unit that participated in the Srebrenica genocide."

FannyCann · 11/01/2022 14:52

Article in the Times discussing the QR code irregularity. Maybe it's a glitch with the website link. Who knows. 🤷‍♀️

Novak Djokovic may have given misleading information on immigration form.

StartupRepair · 11/01/2022 20:03

Last year players for the AO had to quarantine for 2 weeks. Most just accepted it as part of the deal as we were just about Covid free then. Novak complained all the way through. He is a Prima Donna.

Oh dear...

Australian news reporters caught on camera calling Novak Djokovic a ‘lying, sneaky a**hole’

Well, they are entitled to their opinion….and it kind of looks like he must have been economical with the truth in one way or another
