I agree with Rafa Nadal (I also prefer him as a tennis player bu that's by the way).

Cocogreen · 07/01/2022 01:21

Karen Andrews, Federal Home Affairs minister was on the radio this morning saying he was free to leave the country at any time and would be given assistance to do so.
He's a knobhead and not a prisoner.

sashh · 07/01/2022 01:36

@TheDogsMother

I don't understand why Novak has to make a statement about having a medically exempt status. Why didn't he just keep this fact between him and his Drs. I think the fact that he was previously against vaccinations then made this statement publicly has got people's backs up.
I think the problem is that his Drs are not involved.

Australia has had tough rules for years. You have to declare any food stuffs you bring in, and if you were given fruit on the plane and put it in your pocket you will be fined.

You can't take certain things across state boarders.

Covid, and I'm sure the Ruby Princess debacle, has made them tighten their rules.

Wilburisagirl · 07/01/2022 03:33
Yes but the Australians have been such good boys and girls, they have followed all the rules, blah blah blah.

Australia also technically were within the rules of cricket when they did the infamous underarm bowl to NZ in 1981 (as no one has ever anticipated that particular form or cheating till the Australians did it).

Sometimes the rules are horseshit.

And sometimes the Australian government cocks up and one end of the dog doesn't know what the other end is shitting out, as happened here. Novak has absolutely been fucked around by the nation of cricket cheats here.

Also, the Australian army lost a war against fucking unarmed emus in 1932.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emu_War
Please don't tell me you actually bought the emu war story? It's a long running joke - Wikipedia is useful at times but I've witnessed people playing around with it many a time.

In general, despite our background as convicts and the belief in ourselves as larrikins, Australians are on the whole quite compliant with rules and have apathy towards politics. Even when we started having demonstrations towards the end of lockdowns, it was still a tiny proportion of the population. We are however big on fairness and there's still a bit of tall poppy syndrome. Although of course we are not truly equitable (just ask migrants and First Nations people) we hate to see people get given shortcuts
or exemptions due to wealth or status.

Paperplain · 07/01/2022 03:40

@blubberyboo

Even vaccinated it’s a bit of a minefield navigating the rules getting into a country and home again. Therefore if I was unvaccinated trying to get into Australia I would be damn sure that every T was crossed on my paperwork before I set off.

Australia didn’t even allow its own citizens to come home during the pandemic so it’s a bit pathetic for the rich man’s parents to be protesting that he is being held as some sort of prisoner. He’s in quarantine just like the position many poorer people found themselves in all around the world.

I agree with this - other than Aus did allow citizens to come home. Yes there were caps on daily numbers due to quarantine facilities if that's what you mean.
GADDay · 07/01/2022 04:00

@littledrummergirl

Team Novak. He had been granted a medical exemption, it's nobody's business but his and his doctors of why.
But he can't furnish proof of that. So tough tacky to Novax.
GADDay · 07/01/2022 04:11

@HikingforScenery

Who gave him the visa he presented, which was then cancelled after uproar from the public? I’m guessing it was the Australian government? It’s so ridiculous. Why didn’t they just refuse the visa in the first place?
Visas are issued on the basis that applicants have submitted all of the relevant documentation and meet current border regulations.

For example - you can apply for a working holiday visa, on arrival if you are questioned by the ABF and it comes to light you intended on working in a professional capacity, your visa would be cancelled and you would be returned on the next flight. The onus is on the passenger to be able to furnish proof of status if required. This is nothing new.
Have none of you ever watched Border Patrol 😁.

So very different to the freedom of movement that was permitted in the EU.

SD1978 · 07/01/2022 04:40

Ultimately tennis Australia and him/ his management. His choice to vaccinate or not is not the point. He should have been told before getting on the plane that he would be denied entry. There were several emails sent to that effect. By applying for a visa, on an exemption he didn't have and wouldn't be granted, tennis Australia, his management, and him, all share responsibility.

Lauraa7 · 07/01/2022 05:03

Australia are very strict on visa requirements and it is right that if he couldn’t prove his exemption at the border to fulfil the visa, then he be turned away as anyone would be.

Bussinbussin · 07/01/2022 05:18

@JogooRoad

He is still not really being treated like everyone else though. Whilst in a quarantine hotel awaiting the results of his appeal, the judge himself asked if he had access to a tennis court (obviously not). No doubt he will get moved to some five star hotel with his own floor or private facilities with their own courts.

You or me wouldn't even be offered a shower before being escorted on to the next flight home.

He's not in quarantine, he's in an immigration detention hotel.

That's what I've been able to make out from the breathless media coverage, anyway!

plinkplinkfizzer · 07/01/2022 05:35

Novak is being a tit .

PrisonerofZeroCovid · 07/01/2022 05:38

If he hadn't felt the need to publicly gloat about his exemption he'd have probably got away with it. I honestly don't know why he's fighting deportation. It's not like he's going to be able to play the Open. Can you imagine the reaction from the crowd?

Simonjt · 07/01/2022 05:49

Australia has very clear visa requirements, I have played sport in Australia so I needed the correct visa for the type of work I was doing. I needed a state level visa to approve my type of work because it is not a needed or shortage skill, because of my nationality at the time I also needed what is essentially a federal visa. At all parts of the process it is made very very clear that a federal visa trumps a state one and that a state visa (or any visa) is not a guarantee of entry.

The Australian visa system is very very idiot proof.

MarieG10 · 07/01/2022 05:51

I'm with Aus and good on them. They don't out up with any shit at their boarders and is how we should be but won't. If this was the U.K., well wouldn't have happened as they would have given way as soon as he presented at the VIP check through. Plus would immediately be woke human rights protests and urgent judicial review with the judiciary immediately overturning the govt decision.

Makes me realise what a joke this country is compared to others

Gechik · 07/01/2022 06:02

He should do the decent thing and just go home

Sarahschild · 07/01/2022 06:09

Australia! But not in the way that you all think.

Zonder · 07/01/2022 06:38

Team Aus.

Wasn't his medical exemption given by the tennis authority? So not exactly an objective organisation!

And if he is being kept like a prisoner he can just go home.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/01/2022 06:38

he is only a tennis player
he is bu

MarmiteyCrumpets · 07/01/2022 06:51

I think Australia is only unreasonable in that it seems that there hasn't been proper communication between the state and federal governments and Novak. He should have been advised that the federal government would apply their entry critieria i.e. vaccination.

I think Australia is entirely reasonable to apply their entry criteria consistently and without exception.

And whatever his father may think and as great of a player as he might be, he is not in fact Jesus Hmm.

StrangerYears · 07/01/2022 07:14

I'm Victorian.

We have been in lockdown (in Vic) longer than anywhere else in the world. 5km limit for travel/seeing family, no work outside the home unless a key worker (so no income for us as tradies) only supermarkets and pharmacies open. Kids home schooled. For a total of almost 300 days. Once 90 pct were vaxed we were told it would be heading to normal status.

Then this idiot comes along and craps on our progress because he is rich and famous. If he did come in, it makes our months of being locked up senseless.
I would say most Victorians are bloody angry at this shitshow

You've made up an entire fictional scenario there and then used it to justify your conclusion.
Roussette · 07/01/2022 07:29

I read (no idea how true it is) that his wife is into all this 5G nonsense. I think the whole family are anti vaxxers.
So... tough. Not a lot of sympathy I'm afraid.
Knowing how important this tournament was for him, (beating Nadal's record etc) I would've thought getting vaccinated would be the sensible thing to do, so he can break the record.

So.. to me... it leads me to believe he thought he could bend the rules and enter the country. I'm glad they've taken a firm line.

Jowak1 · 07/01/2022 07:30

Team Australia- their rules,people who want to visit abide by them whether you are rich and famous or not. Sick of exemptions being made for the rich and famous.

Why does he need to be informed what the rules are? Most people are capable of looking up the rules for themselves.
