Not really an aibu so apologies. I'm a 5 foot 7 female who needs to lose some weight. I've put my weight and height into nhs bmi and I'm obese, I can try work on that.

But aibu to be really surprised at my 'ideal weight'.

My ideal according to nhs would be between 8 Stone 6 (I mean wtaf) and 11 Stone 5.

I'm never gonna be bloody 8 stone, likely not 11 Stone either. Dp is 11.5 Stone, 30 inch waist and small S clothes, he's very slim and not much taller than me. I'm never gonna weigh the same as him 😅

I was between 11.5-12 stone at age 19 pre kids and I was pretty slim, size 10. I never used to eat much to maintain that weight, used to obsess over calories and was obsessed with exercise. I don't want to be back to that obsessive stage again.

As mentioned above my dp fluctuates between 11.5-12 stone which is in the upper healthy range for a man of 5 foot 9/10. If he was a few pounds heavier he would be deemed overweight. Despite being in a men's size small, 30 inch waist and literally nothing on him 😅

So aibu to think sometimes ideal weight is a load of tosh and we all when different shapes and sizes.

I'm quite broad as well. Quite a 'solid' build rather than excess fat.

It's just disheartening that my ideal weight is probably never gonna be achievable!!

Fair enough @TheOrigRights, running is my nightmare! Good we aren’t all the same isn’t it Grin

SpiceRat · 06/01/2022 16:23

I’m really obese but I do think we’ve lost all sense of what “thin” or “gaunt” is. I think me ideal weight goes down to 7 stone something, that to me seems like a child’s weigh but I have a friend my height who hovers around 8 stone and she doesn’t look like death or too skinny.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 16:27

Thank you very much, @TheLeadbetterLife! It's not luck though - I low-carb and work out a lot. My midlife crisis took the form of nigh-obsessive self-care!

Apologies! I do low carb and work out too (probably not as much as you), and I know the dedication required. That said, I think even at a much lower weight that my waist to height ratio wouldn't change very much. I always thought I was an hourglass, but it turns out that with less fat I'm quite rectangular!
Rno3gfr · 06/01/2022 16:31

When it comes to size/weight/BMI, I think there are a lot of people of differing weights who fit in the same sizes due to vanity sizing and differing hip to waist ratios.

E.g me and DSis are the same height but she is 3 stone heavier. We used to have the same body composition until she gained weight. Up until recently she wore the same size as me, which was a bit ridiculous. She still wears a size below her true size and has to lie down to get the jeans on and stretch clothes, etc., will claim to be one size above me when in reality she’s not. She still gorgeous and has a good body, she’s just not the size she claims to be, which is annoying because it encourages more vanity sizing which isn’t great if you’re a small person with limited places you can shop anyway.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 06/01/2022 16:32

I'm currently a size 12-14, 5ft 6 and 12stone 3.
When I'm 10 stone, I easily fit into size 10 clothes. They're loose too, so I'm not squeezing in!
Everyone has a different body composition.

It is. That would be very dull, and I like that people have introduced me to activities I never would have thought of (open water swimming for example).
AnonAnom940 · 06/01/2022 16:35

@BlwyddynNewydd2022 62kg is 136.4 lb which is 9st 10lb not 10st.

Size 0 at that weight seems unlikely unless it's from a vanity sizing shop. However at 10st I'm a size 10 in those shops and plenty of fat left on me. At 8st 7lb I'm much more slim and just starting to look "athletic" and I'm a size 8. Large boobs and hips/bum but a small frame elsewhere. I'm the same height as you at 5ft 2. So I assume you're just exceptionally muscley!

If you need to obsess over calories and exercise, and can't eat very much at all to maintain a weight of 11.5 to 12 stones, then is it even worth trying? Confused

I cant imagine how disheartening it must be to feel you can barely eat to maintain that weight. Sad

It doesnt sound like a very enjoyable way to live your life.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 16:37

No apology needed, TheLeadbetterLife, and I get you completely - I used to be hourglass shaped when my BMI was about 23, over that I start to look like a brick on a stick, and at the moment I'm sort of carrot shaped! Confused

Yes it is worth bothering. I am shorter and have thin wrists, arms and legs but have big boobs and a spare tire of fat around my middle. I am active and until a few months ago I thought I was very healthy and just took the view my expanding waistline was middle aged spread and as I could still squeeze into a 12/14 I was fine and my diet was ok.

Then I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My eyesight got bad, cataracts are getting worse, tingling fingers, peeing like a race horse, no energy, never ending yeast infections, high blood pressure all are just a few of the problems I am now having at that is before I get the results of my liver and kidney function test.
I am now on metformin which makes me feel sick and upsets my stomach. I have to eat very low carb and no sugar and I am working on getting rid of the fat around my stomach.
Wish I had taken more care 10 years ago and then maybe I wouldn’t have to medicate, eat such a restricted diet and worry about heart decease, fatty liver and kidney problems now.

MsTSwift · 06/01/2022 17:58

It’s not “obsessing over calories” to be aware of what you eat in relation to energy expended. I was mindlessly munching 3 -4 biscuits in one session eating what I wanted large portions and doing a weedy amount of exercise. Weight crept up to nearly 12 stone (5 ft 6). As you age I’m afraid you do need to make more of an effort - 10 stone now and fit and feel so much better for it.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2022 18:10

@MysteriousMonkey

My mum is 5ft1 at at the lower end of her BMI and has been for years, now she has early osteoporosis (I can't remember the medical name) and her doctor told her that being short and thin has not helped her. I'm a similar height and always wanted to be as slim as my mum, strangely I've gone off the idea now!
Being thin OK, but how does being short give you osteoporosis?
Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2022 18:12

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

This is what I got on the first one I tried, and I thought it seemed odd, so tried another one and got a result that said "Take Care"? Most odd, shall probably disregard it.
I got "According to your ABSI z score, your premature mortality risk is high ❗." My BMI is healthy, but I do have a large waist. When I took away just one inch I was average and another inch and my risk was low. www.omnicalculator.com/health/a-body-shape-index
Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2022 18:14

@WorraLiberty

Thanks for the explanation *@Gwenhwyfar*

So when people say they are choosing between 'arse and face', they mean they're actively choosing to be overweight as they think it makes them look younger?

I don't understand that really as jowls are very ageing and as we age, even 'padded out' skin drops anyway.

Maybe not choosing to be overweight, but choosing to be a 12 rather than an 8 or something. I agree about jowls, but the fat really does hide the wrinkles.
FriendshipsAreHardForMe · 06/01/2022 18:16

YABU. That's why there's a range.

I'm 5'4", 8 stone 5lb and a large 10.

I have a small frame so a low weight is very normal for me despite not looking skinny.

If I was at the top of my normal BMI I'd likely look massive. A friend of mine is a similar height and can hold more weight as is a larger frame.

TheLeadbetterLife · 06/01/2022 18:19

That's exactly the point of the ABSI system - it assesses risk based on body shape and where the fat is, not just weight.

The problem with BMI isn't just being outside the range, it's thinking that because you're in the range you're healthy. The range is there because people have different body shapes, not because it's necessarily fine to be anywhere between 18 and 25.

My BMI is 24, but I'm built like a Viking's outhouse, so my ABSI is low risk. I'm still going to see if I can get down to a BMI of 23, and lose a bit more off my waist though, because I'd like to have more of a safety margin.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 06/01/2022 18:23

My BMI is around 37 I think. I really need to get it down but a healthy BMI seems so far away ☹️

doadeer · 06/01/2022 18:26

My BMI is 25, just in healthy range but I can definitely lose another 10lbs and I would look better.

Sizing is huge at the moment - I am a 10–12, in the past I think I would be a size 18

I think we've lost sight of what a healthy body looks like

montysma1 · 06/01/2022 18:26

My husband was a weight lifter! He had ludicrously low body fat and was built like a statue (stares longingly into space).
He isn't that tall, and BMI had him as morbidly obese.
Its a silly measurement. Takes no account of your build or your frame

Most people aren’t weightlifters. Everyone knows bmi isn’t accurate for very high muscle mass. That’s not the general population.
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/01/2022 18:34

@Gwenhwyfar, on the one I did that told me to "take care", adding an inch made me "ok."

The omnicalculator has me as a "very low risk of premature death" though, so...yay?

friedeggandsauce · 06/01/2022 18:40

It's all very weird the weight stuff.

I'm the same height as you but need to be 9 stone to be anywhere near a size 10! At 10 stone I was a size 12. I think it's all about how clothes hang off you 🤷🏼‍♀️

They must do yes....because if I was 10 stone I would be a size 12 to 14 ( I’m also 5ft 6)
MaybeHeIsMyCat · 06/01/2022 18:43

I'm heavy and at 5ft 10 and 14 1/2 stone I'm in a size 14 bottom, and 16 top (boobs won't fit in anything smaller but tops hang off the waist)
