Not really an aibu so apologies. I'm a 5 foot 7 female who needs to lose some weight. I've put my weight and height into nhs bmi and I'm obese, I can try work on that.

But aibu to be really surprised at my 'ideal weight'.

My ideal according to nhs would be between 8 Stone 6 (I mean wtaf) and 11 Stone 5.

I'm never gonna be bloody 8 stone, likely not 11 Stone either. Dp is 11.5 Stone, 30 inch waist and small S clothes, he's very slim and not much taller than me. I'm never gonna weigh the same as him 😅

I was between 11.5-12 stone at age 19 pre kids and I was pretty slim, size 10. I never used to eat much to maintain that weight, used to obsess over calories and was obsessed with exercise. I don't want to be back to that obsessive stage again.

As mentioned above my dp fluctuates between 11.5-12 stone which is in the upper healthy range for a man of 5 foot 9/10. If he was a few pounds heavier he would be deemed overweight. Despite being in a men's size small, 30 inch waist and literally nothing on him 😅

So aibu to think sometimes ideal weight is a load of tosh and we all when different shapes and sizes.

I'm quite broad as well. Quite a 'solid' build rather than excess fat.

It's just disheartening that my ideal weight is probably never gonna be achievable!!

My gm's theory was that your waist should be 40% of your height. HARSH! She used to make her own clothes. She did allow for that % to creep up as you aged though. Mine is about 50% right now. I could starve myself and my waist wouldn't reduce though. My chest would disappear. My face might look gaunt. My bum would go a bit flat. My thighs might even show a gap, but the one thing that never ever happens is my waist going below 30"

SilverRingahBells · 08/01/2022 11:02

I think 5'11" is sufficiently unusual for a woman that a 31.5' waist might be a bit too low as a cutoff, but 35 still seems high.

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:04

I think it's a crude measurement based on the average. I'm tall with a 32" waist & likely have a lot less excess fat around my waist compared to someone 6" shorter with a slightly smaller waist.

BordelDeMerde · 08/01/2022 11:04

@PurpleDaisies

The risk of carrying weight around your waist is higher than other places. It puts you at greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, having a heart attack and stroke. Those risks are dependent on how large your waist measurement is. It is dangerous to carry too much weight there. That’s why *@BordelDeMerde*’s risk profile has come out as high. It’s absolutely right to take action.
Unfortunately, yes. And I really don't want to get diabetes. A PP has described it and it sounds shit. A lot worse than laying off the cheese and chocolate.

When I put 84cm (33 inches) in to it, it gave the risk as average, so that's what I'm aiming for. Averageness. FML Grin
jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:08

@PurpleDaisies I don't think I said excess stomach fat is healthy did I?

My point is someone's who is 5ft with a 31" waist & someone who is 5ft 11 with a 35" waist probably don't have very different levels of excess fat so I'm not sure why one is considered ok but the other isn't.

which isn't 31.5"

BurbageBrook · 08/01/2022 11:10

I very much doubt anyone at 5'7 and 10.5 stone would look 'gaunt', I'm the same height and 9 stone and look perfectly healthy. The range seems fine. Agree that 8 stone 6 is the very lowest end of healthy so obviously aiming for that is unnecessary, but I'd advise aiming for 11 stone/the top end of healthy, at least.

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:14

I do think a lot depends on body shape. I have a small frame despite my height eg size 5.5 shoe, ring size I & I look better at the bottom of my BMI. I used to model (not very well ) & some of the girls would be heavier & broader then me but have more pronounced collarbones/hip bones & thigh gap etc.

MajorNeville · 08/01/2022 11:14

I'm 5'7", I've recently lost weight going from just tipping into obese stage 2, to now being 'merely' overweight. I weigh 13st and would ideally be 10.5-11st, I will be a size 12-14 at that point, if I base that in what I used to be. I'd have to be around 9.5st to be a size 10. I def wouldn't be a 10 at over 11st. I don't take much heed of BMI as that is obviously a blanket guide, I don't understand people outrage at it, it can't be tailored to every individual but something needs to be done about obesity and BMI is a starting point.

And my point is scientists and doctors know more than you.

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:17

My doctor said I was perfectly healthy last month 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think NHS advice is based on the average person understandably & doctors probably give different advice based on individuals but you disagree.

How large is your waist?
jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:28

32"

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:29

I don't believe i'm in more danger than someone who is 5ft with a 31" waist.

The boundary for increased risk is above 31.5in for women. I can see why your doctor wouldn’t have a conversation about losing weight over 0.5in, especially in an unrelated conversation. It’s obviously not as simple as 31.49in fine, 31.51in means certain diabetes/stroke/heart attack.
lollipoprainbow · 08/01/2022 11:42

I lost loads of weight after my daughter and got right down to ten stone, the slimmest I have ever been I loved it but people kept telling me I looked ill ! So stupidly I put it all back on again, nine years later I'm up to 14 stone and so unhappy. I need to be around 11/12 really.

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 11:46

@PurpleDaisies it wasn't unrelated. I was having my "mot" check up with includes weight.

So you think someone who is 5ft with a 31.5" waist is definitely healthy & shouldn't be worried about excess stomach fat?

PurpleDaisies · 08/01/2022 11:59

So you think someone who is 5ft with a 31.5" waist is definitely healthy & shouldn't be worried about excess stomach fat?

Did you not even bother to read my previous post where I said it wasn’t as simple as that?

jeepersdeepers · 08/01/2022 12:04

I said it depends on height & that NHS advice will be broad but doctors likely take an individual approach because someone who is 5ft with a 31.5" waist is likely to have too much fat. You told me And my point is scientists and doctors know more than you but now you are saying it wasn’t as simple as that. 🤣🤣

Icenii · 08/01/2022 12:55

But wouldn't someone who is 5 foot with a 31inch waist have a higher BMI that would encourage them to loose weight? I know people love to look for loop holes to discredit anything to do with weight but if you kept to a healthy BMI and healthy waist measurement, exercise and eat well then you are on the right track. It's easy to say that someone may consume 2000cal of just chocolate and nothing else each day and have a reasonable BMI but be unhealthy but do you really want to be using that to justify your choices?

milkysmum · 08/01/2022 13:05

I'm 5ft 7.
I'm currently about 9st 7lb and a size 10-12. I can feel I've put quite a bit of weight on over past year, and definitely look healthier at the 9st mark.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2022 15:16

"But wouldn't someone who is 5 foot with a 31inch waist have a higher BMI that would encourage them to loose weight?"

I'm a bit taller with a similar waist measurement and am slap bang in the middle of the bmi. You can have a thick waist without being overweight at all so this would never come up at the doctor's. They don't usually measure your waist.
