To ask about super king size bed stuff...

GayParis · 05/01/2022 20:45

I remember reading a thread last year of so many people saying super king beds changed their life etc etc - so I got one!

However after a good few months of having it I'm starting to find there's a duvet issue. We have a super king duvet and we still somehow fight over the edges of it.

I remember on the thread I read people said they had a super king bed and 2 x double duvets - I wondered if anyone could explain a bit more how that ends up working/looking? Can you see an obvious 'join' when the bed is made? And is the double duvet long enough? It's the same size as the bed and we're both quite tall!

TIA Grin

Your next cat should be called Betwixt

We have SK bed & SK duvet. I'm really tempted to get 2 doubles for under the SK. Love full control of a duvet!

Toocooltoboogie · 05/01/2022 23:57

I've just bought one too op and it was the thread you mentioned that swung me Grin We have two single duvets in the same plan colour. Didn't think of getting two doubles as I thought they'd be too much overlap and duvet flapping about I like to wrap the duvet round me anyway. Works for us.

altforvarmt · 06/01/2022 00:02

I have a superking bed with 2 single duvets - we opt for different tog duvets.

It works for me because I like to wrap up in my duvet like a worm and not have it hanging over the edge of the bed. Other people may get on far better with 2 doubles.

SpecialchildSupermum · 06/01/2022 00:30

Super king bed. 2 single duvets - different togs. Bedspread over the top

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 06/01/2022 00:39

I don't understand the trauma here.

We have a SK bed and SK duvet covers however because we only bought the bed 2 years ago we still have a winter KS duvet (it's a good one...Hungarian down).

It works well.

LadyGAgain · 06/01/2022 01:10

Wow this is a whole new problem!!! And I'm glad there are so many creative solutions. I have a weighted blanket over my 'half' ... I wonder if that is helping as he can't hog it!!

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 01:19

Can you see an obvious 'join' when the bed is made?

Yes, but who cares? Does your bed have to be Instagram ready? If it does the job, it's perfect

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 01:27

Currently trying to convince the husband it's a good idea but he's a skinflint so keeps coming up with excuses not to

Two single duvets are easier to change than a king size. Tell him that. That's how I pushed it. Simply cannot do a super king without assistance. He fell for it and now does both ALL BY HIMSELF Wink

Lillipops · 06/01/2022 01:50

Superking bed, one superking duvet and one double duvet. When making the bed put double duvet on first then put superking over the top ...no one would know if you had 2 duvets as they only see the top one. Game changer for us 👍

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 02:00

Then the eldest moved out and separate rooms - never slept so well in my life
I read on here that (maybe) younger people think this would be the end of sex and intimacy and possibly herald the end of their marriage. To sleep separately, I mean.

That's just not true! You can go to bed in a different room, knowing you won't be disturbed by grunting and snoring. Bliss! But occasionally have someone slide in beside you, or you take it in your head to slide in beside them. Maybe just for a reassuring cuddle after a hard day or some bad news.
Or any other reason you can think of. As the wife of a noisy restless sleeper, and I'm a very light restless sleeper myself, it works very well.

If we were forced by law to sleep in the same bed it would make us both consider divorce. We could still have illicit sex.

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 02:01

Outside marriage :)

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 02:05

I don't know why a super kind duvet is too small for others
Because some of us are married to duvet stealers

FruitMelange · 06/01/2022 02:25

or should the dog decide that he will be sleeping on the bed tonight (puppy, 7 months old and 35kg) and he can't pull the duvet out from under him

Eew. You've got more than a duvet problem. You have made yourself a dog problem. I'm around 3 happy, healthy working labradors every day. They are loved and live a life of dog luxury. Plenty of exercise, good food and loving and caring owners.
But no way does it benefit them to learn to be in your bed. Ugh! Our labradors roll in fox shit wherever they find it. They all do. It's like their raison d'etre.

If your dog isn't covered in all sorts of crap it's not living its best life. Ok , let it in the house, but not ever in your bed. Eeeeew.

Genius award. That 100% works. I did not think of that and am kicking myself

BritWifeInUSA · 06/01/2022 06:02

We have an American king size bed which is a few inches wider than a UK super king. We have an emperor duvet. Changing it is a bit like erecting a boy scout tent and I almost have to climb inside the cover. But it’s worth it. Plenty of duvet for both of us.

purplesequins · 06/01/2022 06:14

@AnotherEmma

I've read the two duvet thing on mumsnet before and am very tempted. DH and I have a king size bed (not enough space for a superking, sadly) and a king size duvet, and I don't like sharing! He tends to yank it when I've got all nice and cosy, rather irritating.

Is a single duvet big enough, though? Can you wrap yourself up in it? Would it be silly to have two double duvets on a king size bed? Is there such a thing as a "small double" size duvet?!

a single duvet for a single person is plenty big. you can burrito yourself in Smile
AnotherEmma · 06/01/2022 07:45

@purplesequins
Ha, a new verb, I do love doing that Grin
Now to persuade DH!

ItsAllAboutTheLighting · 06/01/2022 08:32

@BottlingBurpsForGrandma

We just have a superking duvet. Confused What's the issue others have with that?
For us, I like a super thin duvet and like to be at a low temperature to sleep. DH liked a thick duvet all year round. That and his intense body heat made for a very uncomfortable sleep for me.
notanothertakeaway · 06/01/2022 08:47

We have separate duvets, folded like this image www.thelocal.dk/20210408/why-do-danes-use-separate-duvets-for-sleeping/

Cupcakegirl13 · 06/01/2022 09:20

@Dontknowwhatsnormal I got ours from Dusk they had a good sale on at the time.

EerieSilence · 06/01/2022 09:25

We have always had separate duvets. While I'm one foot smaller than DH and half of his weight, he always complains that I'm hogging the duvet as I tend to wrap myself in it. I hate the feeling of not feeling a duvet on my back and front and I can't sleep, when someone is breathing on me, it tickles and irritates my skin (fibromyalgia and chronical migraine here so I am very sensitive to external stimulations like touch, sounds etc.).

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 07/01/2022 17:10

@ItsAllAboutTheLighting that's a good explanation and your comment about intense body heat did make me laugh, our superking bed was such a gamechanger and maybe seperate duvets would be the icing on the cake!

QOD · 07/01/2022 17:14

We have 2 singles lol. And coverless ones at that!
I have 4.5 tog and hubby has a 4.5 and. 10.5 and sometimes piles them on top of each other
I’d imagine double ones take some imaginative half folding ?

We have fine bedding which is a quick dry coverless quilt. The white seersucker. Shove the whole thing in the machine and dries in 1.5 hrs

Roselilly36 · 07/01/2022 17:28

Not an issue for us, we have only had a SK bed for over 20 years, DH never has the duvet over him so no problem here.
