AIBU re nappy changing

I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable and I don’t have kids so I could well be!

Over Xmas at in-laws and 3 year old niece needs her nappy changed. SIL did it in front of everyone in the living room at PILs house.

Ok for a tiny baby but for a 3 year old? It stunk! AIBU to say she should have gone to the bathroom?

That’s grim Shock

Santaisstilleatingmincepies · 04/01/2022 15:20

A 3 yo shitting in a nappy is grim enough without sharing the experience..

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 04/01/2022 15:25

Disgusting. Even when DS was a baby I always changed his nappy on the changing table in his bedroom or if we were visiting someone's house I'd take him to the bathroom. He is now 3 and recently blocked our toilet with over of his poos, sod changing that nappy let alone in a living room with people in it!! 🤢

GalacticGoddess · 04/01/2022 15:26

What do you class as a tiny baby? I would change DD16ms in the living room at my parents or at my in laws. If my DD is still in nappies at this age I probably would ask if she wanted to go to the toilet or stay put and be changed in the room - as it's family and none of us are precious about things like that....although I would hope by 2.5years or so she is toilet trained. The only time I wouldn't change her in from of others is for less close friends or those without kids (and therefore not used to it maybe) or people I don't know well/wider family.

Also, comment above about children still being in nappies by 3 being grim is unfair for those children with SEND or incontinence/anxiety issues.

KiloWhat · 04/01/2022 15:31

It's a good idea to get them used to going to the bathroom by this age so they get hang of the idea that is where poo related stuff should happen.

Caspianberg · 04/01/2022 15:33

Yeah I wouldn’t like that.
Ds is 20 months, I have never changed him in the living room. I just don’t think it’s nice to make a place we sit stink or unhygienic.

At home we use changing table in his room every change, and at someone’s house bathroom. Ds has en-suite bathroom where all dirty nappies live before washed and where we can wash hands and get warm water to use for his butt. If I changed in living room I would still want to wash my hand and get Ds warm water, and flush any poop so it doesn’t even seem convenient

Looneytune253 · 04/01/2022 15:36

Hmmm my bathroom is upstairs with hard floors. I'm a childminder and I've always changed children in the front room in a hidden corner on a mat so I don't see an issue. Especially if she's (effectively as its grandparents) in her own space.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:37

Is it the poo you object to or her flashing the nakedness?

LakeShoreD · 04/01/2022 15:38

I don’t think it necessarily has to be the bathroom, particularly as not all bathrooms have a lot of floor space, but it’s grim AF to change it in the room people are sat in. I would ALWAYS go to another room even with a tiny baby.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2022 15:38

Oh sorry I missed the it stunk. Yeah if it's a poo I'd tend to do it in another room, if it'd a wee I wouldn't. But tiny baby's can smell worse than 3 yos so not really sure why age matters?

yellowleaves123 · 04/01/2022 15:40

YANBU. SIL once changed her 3.5 year olds pooey nappy (not SEN) whilst we were having a family lunch, on the floor next to the table. Vile.

yellowleaves123 · 04/01/2022 15:41

They definitely don't.

EishetChayil · 04/01/2022 15:41

Just a word of warning about sharing stories about your children's nappy changes.

EatYourVegetables · 04/01/2022 15:41

My 3yo uses the toilet and has recently blocked it with a very large poo.

No one needs that in their living room.

Thatsplentyjack · 04/01/2022 15:44

Grim, but why are you still thinking about this enough to post on here? It's the 4th of January!

Couchbettato · 04/01/2022 15:48

What are you all feeding your 3 year olds for these bunker busting shits?

mumda · 04/01/2022 15:48

@KiloWhat

And there's a sink for washing hands!
PlasticCupPolitics · 04/01/2022 15:49

It’s gross, by the age of 3 their poo smells like normal adult poo, nobody wants to be sat smelling that.

Also it’s not nice for the 3yr old, give them some privacy!

LowlandLucky · 04/01/2022 15:52

Is there a reason the 3 year old is still in nappies ?

1forAll74 · 04/01/2022 15:52

its odd to be wearing nappies at this age.. But whatever, do the nappy changing somewhere more private.

yellowleaves123 · 04/01/2022 15:54

Just a word of warning about sharing stories about your children's nappy changes.

Curious, why? Not that I have shared any

BruceAndNosh · 04/01/2022 15:54

Dirty (as opposed to merely wet) nappies should never be changed in communal spaces. it's bloody grim

Toottooot · 04/01/2022 15:56

Not everyone is as perfect a parent as you. 🤷🏻‍♀️
hangrylady · 04/01/2022 15:59

Gross. Not only the smell but also the lack of dignity for the child. A 3 year old should have some privacy.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/01/2022 16:00

Yes, with a poo nappy they should definitely have left the room!
