I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable and I don’t have kids so I could well be!

Over Xmas at in-laws and 3 year old niece needs her nappy changed. SIL did it in front of everyone in the living room at PILs house.

Ok for a tiny baby but for a 3 year old? It stunk! AIBU to say she should have gone to the bathroom?

They’re* not their

@LowlandLucky because peoples' attitudes towards toilet training have changed. People used to tell children off for wetting themselves and make them feel bad about it, when it wasn't really their fault.
Also people were using the word toilet trained when their kids still had to be taken to the toilet every half an hour for months, to me that isn't toilet trained.
Let them do it in their own time, it doesn't matter!

Gross. I have always hated having to change DD where other people could see, even when she was a tiny baby. Maybe that's precious of me but hey ho.

@fattymumbum

What's grim about poo? It is just poo after all, and we all do it. I wouldn't be taking them to the bathroom, I've never found enough room.
You wouldn’t do it in the living room though? Or be thrilled if someone else did?
MogsBestestFurball · 05/01/2022 14:39

That unreasonable as it is not treating the child with dignity and respect. The child is old enough to deserve privacy.

I used to work in a nursery and a fair few 3 year olds were in nappies. The benefit was once the parents did decide to potty train the children got it really quickly with practically no accidents. Whereas younger children, say those who were 2 did tend to have more accidents.
If a child is ready at 3 then that's when they're ready.
I had one who wasn't potty trained until she was just over 2 and 1/2 years and one who was potty trained at 22 months. My youngest is 19 months and has zero interest at the moment. Doesn't matter, it's not a race.

I change DS aged 2 wherever he is at my mum’s house! However if she had guests / there was a room full i’d take him to the bathroom, like I do anywhere else. DS likes to flush his poo down the toilet nowadays anyway 🤣

Hotyogahotchoc · 05/01/2022 15:06

That's grim and unnecessary

Even with my 6 month old I wouldnt assume others were happy for me to change their nappy in front of them or in the living room

Metallicalover · 05/01/2022 15:18

All these people changing nappies in living rooms... why?? Takes 2 seconds to take them upstairs, change them on a changing table (which is washed regularly) or bathroom. Then wash your hands!
I don't want urine and faeces in my living area!

@shamalidacdak

First of all why is a three year old still in Nappies?
Guess you probably wouldn't say this a parent of a 3 year old in nappies in real life
