To ask what the hell to do about my leaking arse!

alittlebitembarrassing · 03/01/2022 22:25

Exactly as the title says. Very crass but it is a literal pain in my arse and I’m starting to feel very unwell.

Backstory: I have inflammatory bowel disease and have had my large intestine removed. I had a stoma for 10 months and then a reversal surgery joining my small intestine to my rectum. I have mild proctitis left in my rectum.

A week ago, my anus started itching and leaking fluid. It has been getting worse and worse to the point I am leaking through my underwear to my clothes, I am uncomfortably wet all of the time and it is so painful to go to the toilet that I almost vomit from the pain and am just living by having cold baths.

The leaking is mucous, I’ve developed wounds on my bum cheeks from the dampness, and it is mixed with blood and green pus.

I developed abdominal pain with it two days ago so went to A&E who were useless, have referred me to gastro (no idea how long that will take), and told me my infection markers are raised so gave me antibiotics. Nothing else.

Today I have been on off sleeping and am feeling feverish and unwell in myself. When I was at A&E my heart rate was 120 and my blood pressure was high, but they said they weren’t concerned.

I am leaking massively to the point it’s not even just damp it is like water is pouring out of me.

I don’t want to waste another 8 hours in A&E to be sent home, but I’m feeling unwell in myself now, I can’t go to the toilet properly because it absolutely kills.

What do I do?!

Glad you are being seen. I think it's more to do with the fact we are short of ambulances and staff to drive them rather than it being inappropriate that the op rang one.

Weenurse · 04/01/2022 02:45

Good luck💐
Just a quick question, do you pass any air when you pass urine?

So glad you got to hospital @alittlebitembarrassing and hope you’re feeling better soon - sending best wishes xx

It absolutely needs to be said when stroke patients are waiting an hour for an ambulance and heart attack patients are literally dying because there wasn’t an ambulance available

Surely the people who take the calls have a triage system and will organise help accordingly. Telling people they shouldn't call for an ambulance is wrong, and could cost someone dearly should they be influenced by posts berating people who do.

toofer · 04/01/2022 05:14

Good luck OP! Thinking of you...you poor thing.

Hi, and as a fellow IBD sufferer, I am glad you are getting help.

It is so very scary having a disease where your body is outside your control. And I am a bit sad to say our caregivers are not sometimes there for us fully because they too feel helpless.

After all, you are now "cured" by horribly invasive surgery, right? I mean that a bit lighted hearted, but honestly it drives me mental when they say, no problem, we can cure you. Just let us take out your colon and you will never look back.

Sadly, there is no 100% good option. The new biologics are better but still. I am on Entyvio right now and doing well.

I simply do not understand why anyone would give you grief for calling an ambulance. I am so sorry that has happened.

I hope you feel better soon. Don't let them neglect you because your condition is chronic and difficult to treat. Because it is, and that means you need lots of help.

Take care.

I live on the west coast of Canada and am just going to bed, but if you would like to chat a bit more, feel free to pm me. We need each other in this IBD world.

It absolutely doesn't need to be said.

How do you know the OP doesn't have sepsis?

This is not individual very sick people's problem to fix by being patient.

Itsokay2020 · 04/01/2022 05:29

OP I am so sorry you are going through this, absolutely horrific and a terrible testament to the state of the NHS in 2022. I hope you will now receive effective and appropriate treatment, as others have said, make sure you advocate for yourself.

I am sending you good wishes and the best of luck, please keep us updated! Flowers

Agreed - we are told if we think we are having a medical emergency to ring 999. That was drummed into all of us in school. What we weren't told was that one day even if you are very very ill an ambulance still won't be able to turn up for you due to years of government cuts. That's not really on the OP though. She didn't do anything wrong. She rang 999 and she took their advice. Hope you're ok OP.
GarageMusicLover1980 · 04/01/2022 05:55

I hope you're okay OP. Get well soon x

justustwoandmoo · 04/01/2022 06:03

Hope you get some answers OP 😘

Hope you’re ok OP, that sounds horrendous

So glad to read you're being seen. Really hope you get some answers and feel better soon xx

Alittlepotofrosie · 04/01/2022 07:16

I despise the people on Mumsnet who tell others not to ring ambulances. It's not up to them to decide who is most worthy.

I'm glad you're being seen op.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 04/01/2022 07:25

Glad you're being seen op. Don't let them fob you off

Yes, that’s the job of the 999 call handler to decide.
Mistyplanet · 04/01/2022 07:37

Hope you're ok OP. You were absolutely doing the right thing calling an ambulance. I know your partner couldnt drive but even if he could in my experience its sometimes the only way to get treated as an emergency. You went through the right channels before and werent helped so absolutely your right to insist for help. There is people who can help you in hospitals sometimes you've just got to fight for it and not care what anyone might think. Hope you're doing better OP, wishing you a speedy recovery xx

Pure virtue signalling! "My leg was hanging off and I didn't ring an ambulance!"

Speak to your doctor
How helpful Hmm

I am glad you are in A&E now OP, and I hope you are being looked after well Thanks

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 04/01/2022 08:07

I hope you are doing better, OP, and got seen quickly.

To the posters saying the OP shouldn't call an ambulance: We should always call an ambulance if needed. Making assumptions about other posters' medical needs is dangerous, stupid and irresponsible. The part of the UK in which I live has no such problems with ambulance waiting times.
