New year new ideas please!

Ours had got to the stage of something like this...:

  1. burger and chips
  2. pork loin steaks veg and potatoes
  3. sausage, mash, peas and gravy
  4. curry and rice
  5. pizza and chips
  6. take away or eat out
  7. roast

I need to mix it up, eat less meat and more veg.

Would you mind sharing what an average week of dinners may look like to you?

We are aiming to eat all vegetarian this month (usually do about 3 veg dinners a week normally anyway. This week is:

Cheese and bean quesadillas with salad and roasted veg
Lentil soup with bread/butter
Lentil tacos (made with leftover soup)
Tarka dal, roasted spicy chickpeas, chapatis with raita, mango chutney, salad
Leftover dal, etc the next night too
Veg sausages, mash/chips, roasted veg and gravy

@RedHot22

Yes. Really!

Lamb, followed by pork belly, followed by beef, on 3 consecutive days.

Lovely!

I can’t believe the amount of meat being consumed here! It’s shocking and surprising, I had no idea people ate like that.
How do you know how much meat they are eating? You could eat meat six nights a week and be eating the same amount as someone else eating meat three nights a week.

This isn't the thread for you. We're not wearing our judgy pants here.

Thursday- spag Bol
Friday - homemade burgers
Sat - chicken risotto & veg
Sun - roast dinner chicken

Grin Tbh, I was surprised too, not because I'm judgey, but because this is Mumsnet, home of the chicken that feeds a village (and still has leftovers for sandwiches) and I thought there would be more vegetarians. Absolutely no judgement - we will end up with McDs at least one day and probably sandwiches in the car another day, rushing from one activity to another.

I’m not judging, just genuinely surprised.

Chicken Fajitas
Beef stew
Beef stew Day 2
Kievs or fish and chips (easy tea)
Spaghetti Bolognese
Lasagne with leftover Bolognese and garlic bread
Take away

We definitely need to work on a go to yummy vegetarian dish. We're both always fall back to dishes that have meat/fish.

But I like that we have several two day meals now as I absolutely love having leftovers for our one year old to try and it's just so convenient and with rising food prices we're saving some money.

Maskedsingerispants · 03/01/2022 21:59

I’m surprised at some having meat every night, again, def not judging, just surprised. We probably have chicken, maybe once per week, if that, sometimes mince/beef but fairly rarely.

Sceptre86 · 03/01/2022 22:13

This week the plan is
Monday-pilau rice with spinach and lamb curry
Tuesday-eating at mils
Wednesday - meat and potato pie
Thursday- probably leftovers from the night before
Friday-herb crusted salmon, baby potatoes and Kale
Saturday-we will have some family friends over to see our baby so will do more snacks bits. Samosas, spring rolls, pizza, pasta and chips
Sunday-dhal and chapatis.

I try to keep at leat two days a week meat free.

Sofuckingsad · 03/01/2022 22:14

I try for two fish nights, two veggie nights, two meat and a takeaway.

Mon - kegeree
Tuesday - beef stew and mash
Wednesday - veggie lasagne
Thursday - salmon, veg, pots
Friday - caesar salad with chicken
Saturday - takeaway
Sunday - veggie cottage pie

Pedalpushers · 03/01/2022 22:21

This week:

  • Chickpea curry
  • Sausage and vegetable bake
  • Salmon and prawn fishcake with wedges and whatever veg we have in
  • Stuffed peppers
  • Mediterranean gnocchi traybake
  • Black bean fajitas
  • Roast beef
TwoBigNoisyBoys · 03/01/2022 23:32

Just done mine this evening…
Tuesday - homemade meatballs, pasta, garlic bread
Wednesday - shepherds pie
Thursday - slow cooked gammon with new pots and cauliflower cheese, broccoli etc

Friday - pizza night for kids, homemade (and previously frozen) chilli for me
Saturday - possibly burgers and wedges?

Sunday - roast chicken dinner

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 03/01/2022 23:34

Loving all the inspiring ideas on here, I cook the same old stuff on about a 10/12 day rotation and am bored stiff! Also looking to cook more veggie meals so this thread is great 😊

Saying it's shocking is judgemental.

Oh that's my menu! Apologies for shocking you - I hope you were at least sat down on a normal chair when you first read it, I would hate for you to have toppled from your high horse! Yes, we're not the healthiest household but I knew that already.
LonglegsMumtheBlacksmith · 04/01/2022 06:34

@Svara
Thank you - a third of my plate is vegetables most evening and our lunches are all vegetarian.
@RedHot22
I cook a lot of meat as my DW and her elderly relative both eat a meat heavy diet and always have - I have tried rationing the meat before and it genuinely does not suit them.
I also aim for leftovers (I don't have any to use this week because of Christmas/New Year) to use in future meals and to give to said elderly relative for nights that I am not cooking for them.

RedHot22 · 04/01/2022 06:59

Apologies to the everyday meat eaters who feel judged. No-one should feel the need to be defensive or to justify their meal choices.

This thread has been enlightening for me though as I genuinely believed there had been a significant shift towards eating less meat for health and environmental reasons.

You still seem to he judging..

For health and environmental reasons, sounds like another judgy post!

RedHot22 · 04/01/2022 07:11

You still seem to be judging..

Oh that’s your perception, I can’t control how you feel about yourself.

I feel fine thanks, you're coming across as disingenuous saying I'm not judging but then giving a little dig about health and environment. It's almost like you're not really apologetic about your judgment and you're justifying why not.
RedHot22 · 04/01/2022 07:30

Well yes, I’m not apologetic about my judging because I’m not judging. You come across like you feel the need to defend your choices when you really don’t have to.

But I haven't even expressed my choices?
Lex345 · 04/01/2022 07:35

I wouldn't mind eating less meat, but DH would. If I tried to serve a meat replacement like Quorn he simply wouldn't eat it, so completely wasted. I have cut down portion sizes of meat and use veg to bulk out meat based meals, so now I will get 2 meals from a pack of mince (5 of us) instead of just the one. I want to be as healthy as possible and am conscious of sustainability-but food should be enjoyed too. Little health benefit to be had from serving a vegan meal which will go straight in the bin and replaced with a pack of Hobnobs.
In summer I can get away with a bit less as we have a lot of salads.

Caramellatteplease · 04/01/2022 07:42

7 meals out of:
Stirfry
Chorizo Pasta
Haggis and airfryer roasties
Spag bol
Brie and bacon rissotto (cooking on a bootstrap but less bacon more veg)
Bolognese
Chilli (with Quinoa not rice)
Salmon and cous couscous or quinoa
