Would your DC watch these T.V shows?

berriesandstraws · 02/01/2022 17:40

DS is 22, DH over Christmas has watched things on T.V which he likes watching such as carry on films, only fools and and horses, Dad's army. DS does not want to watch any of these things. DH thinks DS is missing out as DS does not want to watch these things with us as he's not interested in watching them. DH said when he was kid he loved watching those things and it's the perfect thing to watch at Christmas.

AIBU to ask if your DC around my DS's age would be interested in watching any of the programmes mentioned above?

At around that age I got my ds into Open All Hours!

TremendouslyJolly · 02/01/2022 17:43

I am forty and considered those to be boring old people shows when I was 22 and still so!

JamieTartt · 02/01/2022 17:44

When we were in early 20s DH watched all of Only Fools and Horses.

GoGoGretaDoll · 02/01/2022 17:44

It's personal taste though, isn't it? I was never interested in Dad's Army and the Carry On Films are just sexist old shite. Only Fools, on the other hand, is complete genius. But no-one ever liked anything because their dad told them they had to...

SomebodysMum · 02/01/2022 17:45

My DD is only 3 so can’t say for her but I can say that for myself at the age of 22 I found them boring, dated, just not funny.

ShinyMe · 02/01/2022 17:46

I just about tolerate Dad's Army, which can be ok. I sort of enjoyed Only Fools and Horses first time round, when I was maybe early teens, but I've never liked Carry On. I wouldn't watch any of them now, and don't know any young people who would watch them.

But as an adult, staying with parents means you watch what your parents choose, even if it's the Call the bloody Midwife Christmas special and 70 billion episodes of Shaun the Sheep.

Waspsarearseholes · 02/01/2022 17:46

With the exception of Only Fools and Horses, absolutely no way.

DustyMaiden · 02/01/2022 17:46

DS 21 Only watches F1

I hate those shows and I’m 60

Hellocatshome · 02/01/2022 17:47

Your DS is 22 so really does it matter? He jsnt missing out on anything it is just TV. I'm sure there are some things he likes to watch that your DH doesn't.

Lillyhatesjaz · 02/01/2022 17:47

My DD and DS are both similar ages and would not want to watch those things. DS will watch have I got news for you and QI with me and also some times wildlife or history documentaries otherwise he doesn't watch TV.
DD will also watch these things and also likes the bake off, the sewing b, and the masked singing and Netflix

CaptainThe95thRifles · 02/01/2022 17:48

Good lord no. I wouldn't watch those now, nor would I have at 22, nor would any of the late teens / young adults I teach, especially the Carry On movies.

That said, there's no doubt some 22 y/olds out there who do enjoy them, but if your DS doesn't, I can't see how that would help your situation.

Snoozer11 · 02/01/2022 17:49

I wouldn't expect someone to sit down with episode 1 and obsessively watch each and every episode until the last without distraction.

I think if it was on in the background I would think someone of that age could gain an appreciation for it.

I don't imagine your husband would appreciate being made to sit through a programme your 22 year old loved so I don't see why it should be any different the other way around.

I would expect a 22 year old to be mature enough not to write something off just because it was filmed in the 80s/90s, if that's the main issue here.

whysoserious123 · 02/01/2022 17:50

I love only fools when I was a kids because of my parents and me and DH watch them now. (we are young) absolute classic

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 02/01/2022 17:50

My DS is 26 and sadly he'd probably sit and watch that shite unless I forced him to get off the settee and exercise either his body or brain.

I'd rather spend those hours unclogging a toilet personally.

Snoozer11 · 02/01/2022 17:50

Note I'm only talking about OFAH above.

There's no fucking way I would expect someone to enjoy the Carry On films. They were old fashioned a generation ago and outdated the generation before that!

NoddingTulip · 02/01/2022 17:53

I have a 20yr old ds and a 21yr old dd, they both quite enjoy Only Fools, Dads Army they have watched a couple but didn't go much on it. Carry on the both hated(as do dh and I) they both said it was terrible, derogatory, unfunny and cringed throughout the one they saw(which we never saw to tge end as utter rubbish).

thewhatsit · 02/01/2022 17:53

I used to love Only Fools and Horses and Dad’s Army when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. I’d still watch Dad’s Army if it’s on.
I guess it’s a bit different now though. I watched these things with my parents because they were on. Other than putting on a VHS there wasn’t much option and I grew to really like them. These days you just watch what you fancy on demand and I don’t think you’d get into something that your parents like in the same way.

Riverlee · 02/01/2022 17:53

No, my do (similar age) would not watch them, or Only Fools at a push.

The only programmes we watched as a family was Death in Paradise, and one of the dc watched The Voice Kids with us. Apart from that, they watched films during the Christmas holidays.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/01/2022 17:54

I grew up watching them. (Mid thirties). Not all of them have aged well.

Theres a lot more choice now.

(Just compare the "new" Dads Army theme to the older version. The female characters are a lot more prominent for example. We aren't background now!)

thewhatsit · 02/01/2022 17:54

Carry On films though.. you’d have to pay me to watch.

mogschristmascalamity · 02/01/2022 17:55

Your DH has shite taste in tv.

Plasmodesmata · 02/01/2022 17:57

Carry on films were outdated when I was 22 (and I'm old). Turned telly on to Carry on up the Khyber at some time over Christmas featuring Kenneth Williams in a turban and a lot of brown makeup and thought "wtf", swiftly switched it off again.
I don't like Dads Army either (not funny) or really Only Fools (mostly not funny).

My teenagers happily watched the Blackadder Christmas Special though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/01/2022 17:57

Does your dh ever sit and watch ds favourite shows with him?

HarrietSchulenberg · 02/01/2022 17:58

Carry On films mine would watch at a push and maybe Dad's Army. None of us would watch Only Fools and Horses.

Dilbertian · 02/01/2022 17:59

All our dc, from 14 to 22, love Blackadder and 'Allo 'Allo. They don't get Carry Ons - they can see that some bits are funny, but too much is offensive and they are altogether too dated. They have watched Morecambe & Wise and The Two Ronnies with us, but while they enjoy some of the sketches, they get bored by a while show. Dad's Army falls somewhere between M&W and Blackadder in watchability for my lot.

So on the whole I think your DH IBU. But how about reversing it? Ask your dc to suggest shows that crack them up and will be their memories. Ours have introduced us to the surreality of Studio Ghibli (Japanese) and Auntie Donna (Australian).
