Would your DC watch these T.V shows?

DS is 22, DH over Christmas has watched things on T.V which he likes watching such as carry on films, only fools and and horses, Dad's army. DS does not want to watch any of these things. DH thinks DS is missing out as DS does not want to watch these things with us as he's not interested in watching them. DH said when he was kid he loved watching those things and it's the perfect thing to watch at Christmas.

AIBU to ask if your DC around my DS's age would be interested in watching any of the programmes mentioned above?

DH and I both like those shows and watch Only Fools quite often on Gold…. We’re in our 40s.

Some 20-somethings may like them but I think for many they may not get a lot of the jokes and cultural references as they were very of their time.

A4513 · 02/01/2022 18:09

No, they're dated and boring and poorly written.

All of them.

However, some people like them and it's fine.

What's not fine is to pressure family members and dictate your personal taste into what they "should" enjoy watching. You don't get to dictate personal taste.

LonginesPrime · 02/01/2022 18:11

They're of a different age and largely very dated now, especially the Carry On films.

It's a bit different for people who've grown up with them and who see them as nostalgic, but I'd think it slightly odd if a 22 yr old watched old Carry On films for the first time and thought they were amazing and not problematic in any way.

LightBulbous · 02/01/2022 18:29

I’m mid forties and would not watch what your DH likes. Not my style at all. Probably watched when I was a child and there was only 4 channels to choose from but I certainly wouldn’t now. No way would I have watched it in my early 20’s either.

Of course your DS will have his own taste in TV. He’s an individual with his own likes. Just because you’re related doesn’t mean you’d like the same TV, Music, Books etc.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 02/01/2022 18:32

No.

At that age, I did like things like Blackadder and Fawlty Towers, though, plus Keeping Up Appearances, though that's not quite in the same league age-wise.

akittyisyou · 02/01/2022 19:31

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Does your dh ever sit and watch ds favourite shows with him?
I was going to reply to say just this. My dad was always eager to get me into his interests/tastes but always refused to watch anything I liked. Didn’t matter if it was something he might love.

I would also say, a lot of the stuff you listed has aged horribly. If you lived in the era they first came out in, they’re relatable and have nostalgia value, but if you haven’t, they come off as very dated, overly camp, predictable and tedious to watch. There’s a reason they’re just not using this comedy format anymore.

PrincessesRUs · 02/01/2022 19:33

I'm nearly 40 and I'd refuse to watch any of those. I'd watch dads army at a push. I loathe the others!

dinahsdishes · 02/01/2022 19:51

I grew up with having to watch these- only 3 or later 4 channels- I wouldn't watch them now- carry on films are offensive and the other two haven't aged well. I wouldn't watch anything with the 'national treasure' David Jason and certainly wouldn't expect anyone else to.

With the teenagers we've enjoyed movies over Christmas and sport - football/ darts because everyone likes those things.

Tulips21 · 02/01/2022 19:52

@Waspsarearseholes

With the exception of Only Fools and Horses, absolutely no way.
agree
Womencanlift · 02/01/2022 20:01

What age is your DH? I will agree with only fools as it’s a classic but Dads Army and most certainly Carry On films were awful and dated when I was your DS age and I’m in my 40s now

mangomama91 · 02/01/2022 20:10

I'm 30 and grew up with my dad watching Only Fools, so I definitely would have watched/ did watch it when I was 22. Maybe not the other two by choice.

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 02/01/2022 20:33

@mogschristmascalamity

Your DH has shite taste in tv.
i.e. not your taste, that's all. Hopefully the son doesn't inflict the ghastly American 'comedies' on the family! Maybe the son can buy/bring his own TV next time.

Fools and Horses is utter tripe at whatever age.
Womencanlift · 02/01/2022 20:38

@BendicksBittermints4Breakfast not tripe just “not your taste, that’s all” as per your previous post

Life would be boring if we all liked the same things or be forced to like it just because your parents did

BitterTits · 02/01/2022 20:40

@EvenMoreFuriousVexation

My DS is 26 and sadly he'd probably sit and watch that shite unless I forced him to get off the settee and exercise either his body or brain.

I'd rather spend those hours unclogging a toilet personally.

Is this the most Mumsnet post ever?
MeredithGreyishblue · 02/01/2022 20:44

Oh god, no. I wouldn't want to let alone the kids!

I never got the appeal of Fools. Dad's Army makes me feel a bit depressed. 80s sitcoms, in general, aren't my cup of tea either then or now. My kids would think we'd lost the plot!

3beesinmybonnet · 02/01/2022 20:55

My son would watch Fools and Horses and Dad's Army but none of us would watch Carry On films - outdated offensive rubbish.
You can't make someone else like something just because you do, and tastes change so much over a generation.
I think when you're stuck in front of the TV at Christmas everyone should get to choose a programme. Maybe your DH would then discover some new programmes to enjoy. My son's a bit older than yours but without his input I would never have watched The Inbetweeners, Russell Howard or Breaking Bad. My DH tends to watch the same old stuff on repeat and is very resistant to trying a new programme, and Id rather do something crafty than watch TV alone.

TheHamburgler · 02/01/2022 21:15

I’d have somewhat enjoyed some of those shows in my early-mid teens, but they’re just very very dated. I’m approaching 40 now and I definitely would not choose to watch any of them.

Comedy generally doesn’t age well.

OwMyToe · 02/01/2022 21:15

If your husband is old enough to have a 22-year-old son, he's old enough to know that people have different tastes in entertainment. If he wants them to spend time watching something together, I'd suggest they take turns choosing what to watch and then maybe take a break from the TV and do something else together, like a card game or a walk.

AsYouWishButtercup · 02/01/2022 21:19

I’m mid-30’s and I wouldn’t want to watch any of that crap let alone enforce it on my kids

Darbs76 · 02/01/2022 21:21

Times have changed, we had nothing else to do at home.

Ohyesiam · 02/01/2022 21:32

Possibly only fools, but not the rest.

crazyjinglist · 02/01/2022 23:04

My dd is only 16 but god no - she would absolutely hate any of that stuff. I wouldn't watch it either and I'm 50!

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 02/01/2022 23:28

To answer your question very literally, no, not one of my DCs between 21 and 27 would watch any of the named shows.

toomuchlaundry · 02/01/2022 23:36

When DS was about 10 he loved Dad’s Army. My parents bought him the box set one Christmas and he watched it over and over for many years. Doesn’t watch it as much now (he is now 17) but will watch it when it is on the TV. He got the OFAH box set a couple of years ago but didn’t get into that as much. He also loved Open All Hours.
Very into Death in Paradise now.
