Would your DC watch these T.V shows?

DS is 22, DH over Christmas has watched things on T.V which he likes watching such as carry on films, only fools and and horses, Dad's army. DS does not want to watch any of these things. DH thinks DS is missing out as DS does not want to watch these things with us as he's not interested in watching them. DH said when he was kid he loved watching those things and it's the perfect thing to watch at Christmas.

AIBU to ask if your DC around my DS's age would be interested in watching any of the programmes mentioned above?

My DS is 14 - he has enjoyed watching Only Fools and Horses, Red Dwarf and Fawlty Towers with his dad.

Your DH is being really weird about it. Not everyone likes to watch the same shows. It doesn't mean they are 'missing out' - I can't think of anything I would rather watch less than a carry on film tbh.

Does it matter? One of mine might. The rest might not. DH would have, I wouldn't. We are all different. This isn't a question of age.

littleowls83 · 02/01/2022 23:54

My Ds currently loves Dad's Army. He is 10. He has watched the TV shows and the film versions and listened to the radio plays and can tell you useless facts about it. He wouldn't get Only Fools and Horses and I wouldn't let him watch a Carry On film if I even knew where to find any of them. I'd be pretty concerned if by 22 he found any of it worth watching.

itwasntaparty · 03/01/2022 00:18

It's not relevant to them so why would they want to watch them? Now Only fools is pure nostalgia to me but wouldn't be to a 20 year old. They've got their own shoes that are relevant to their lives.

Morewinehenry · 03/01/2022 00:21

@mogschristmascalamity

Your DH has shite taste in tv.
My sentiments exactly.
Toofuckingearly · 03/01/2022 02:12

My 19 year old son loves Only Fools and Horses, and Fawlty Towers, he watches them over and over.

Ghostofchristmaspasty · 03/01/2022 07:15

Your DH should agree to watch the things your 22yo thinks are good to share the experience- it works both ways.

Personally I cannot abide dad's army or carry on films. They were dated even before your son was born.

TidyDancer · 03/01/2022 07:24

My DCs are younger than that but I'm in my 30s and definitely wouldn't watch any of those.

Perhaps your DH could try to find something DS would be interested in and become interested himself?

newnameforthis76 · 03/01/2022 11:00

It doesn’t really matter who else would/wouldn’t watch those shows. Grown adults have different tastes and it’s really weird for your husband to think that any 22-year-old man ‘should’ sit through hours of TV programmes he doesn’t enjoy just because your husband happens to like them. Your DS isn’t ‘missing out’ and your DH really needs to understand that people are allowed to like different things.

GreenWheat · 03/01/2022 11:05

Most comedy is of its time and doesn't age well. All those shows are very dated so I am not surprised that someone in their 20s isn't keen on watching them. They are only "classics" to people who grew up watching them in a time when TV held a much more important place as an entertainment option than it does now.

Cocomarine · 03/01/2022 11:10

Your husband is weird.
Doesn’t matter whether someone on here would watch them or not - your son isn’t interested, that’s fine.
My child binge watched all 10 episodes of Cobra Kai season 4 when it dropped last Friday. We disagree that that was the perfect NYE activity - but I don’t think I get to dictate her tastes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Brakebackcyclebot · 03/01/2022 11:13

OMG Carry on films are misogynistic c

MargaretThursday · 03/01/2022 11:13

My dc (oldest is early 20s) have all watched the old ones like the Carry On Films, Allo, Allo, Dad's Army, Blackadder and enjoyed them. We used to watch one every Sunday evening before they went to bed.

It is though a matter of taste, ds in particular loves the slapstick humour of the Carry Ons, but dd2 is less keen on those. You do need to pick the Carry On carefully though, some are better than others. I recommend "Don't lose your head" which is our favourite.

Brakebackcyclebot · 03/01/2022 11:14

Oops carry on films are misogynistic dated crap.
OFAH us funny in small doses.
Dad's Army is very dated.

My DS is 17 and I wouldn't subject him to any of these unless I was trying to show him how much society and comedy have changed since the 1970s.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/01/2022 11:15

There’s not a chance in hell my dd aged 19 would watch any of those. She barely watches anything we like. (We don’t like those mentioned either). She likes things like Normal people, Skins, vampire diaries (she fancies Ian Somerhalder!) and euphoria. We just do our own thing to be honest. I wouldn’t try and encourage her to watch the same things as us as I know she’d be bored.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/01/2022 11:17

OFAH, yes. The others, no interest.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/01/2022 11:19

Funny enough we all LOVE cobra kai- me, dh, dd aged 19 and Ds aged 9. It’s got enough nostalgia for dh and me but the kids absolutely love it. We binge watched it all over 2 days (well the latest season anyway)!
Cocomarine · 03/01/2022 11:40

It’s not only about them being out of date (as some things do endure) but also comedy is so subjective.

My equivalent is my dad expecting me to watch Laurel & Hardy with him. To this day, I cannot find anything funny in slapstick. Oh look a man gets hit by a ladder carried by his companion - then they turn and he’s hit AGAIN. My dad had tears rolling and I was just bored.

liveforsummer · 03/01/2022 11:53

I'm 20 years older and wouldn't enjoy watching them. Would have watched them as a child as there was little other choice but not at 22 and not now

Laiste · 03/01/2022 12:26

carry on films, only fools and and horses, Dad's army

Carry On films is postcard humour sexist shite. It felt dated when i was a teen in the 80s!

Dad's Army - same joke over and over and very of it's time. Bit like 'Allo 'Allo. You've seen one episode and you've seen them all.

Only Fools would raise a laugh from me now, but i haven't seen an episode for years. I couldn't sit though loads of it.

I have 20 something kids and they might have a chuckle at an episode of OFAH (without putting mobile phone down) but i can't see them ploughing through more than one.

They're not really ''missing out'' by not seeing dated TV comedy. You don't hear any cultural references to it now.

Kshhuxnxk · 03/01/2022 12:42

Didn't like Dads Army because of Clive Dunn but apart from that we would watch the others before Strictly/Masked Singer etc

RavenclawsRoar · 03/01/2022 12:48

I wouldn't sit through them either! They ARE old and boring. Only Fools is ok - I could probably manage a couple of episodes. The other two are absolutely dire and I'm over a decade older than your ds.

CowMarshland · 03/01/2022 12:52

Growing up these were on tv once a week now people can binge, not the same. At 22 Dads Army full of old people no thanks

Dancingsmile · 03/01/2022 19:23

I'm in my 50s, so probably near your H age.
I find all those shows dated and wouldn't choose to watch them, let alone my children.
It's down to taste but some of them are quite sexist.
Only fools is OK in snippets but not the whole show.

StormyCornishSeas · 03/01/2022 19:39

I didn't mind Only Fools & Horses & Dads Army. Also would watch Allo Allo and the good life

The Carry on movies are dire though. Watched a bit of Carry On up the Jungle the other day and that has not aged well
