Aibu to not like drag Queens?

And why don’t I? To me there is something intimidating and scary in the make up, and harsh glamour, parodied until it’s ugly and I think, aggressive. I remember going to drag shows long again in the 90s and they seemed to be a bit of fun and almost innocent compared to whatever it is about ru Paul et al. Nothing wrong with a bit of dame Edna from what I remember as a kid. What’s the reasoning behind this new style I wonder, and aibu?

Must admit I see toddler with the face paint rather than creativity in a lot of it

That's fair enough, I often see paintings or works of art that dont appeal to me and just look like a toddler was let loose with a bucket of paintGrin so I completely get that.

But surely you could have the creativity without for example false boobs , mimicking a female body, stereotype female walks and hair flicks , without reference to the female form and function, without calling yourself a girl?

Of course you can have creativity without all of that. This is just how some drag artist express theirs.

Hardly creative is it.

footcushion · 03/01/2022 13:02

I'm sure it's been said already but I do not like the values they like to project in association with women - it annoys me when they use the pronouns she and her - women do not need our sex represented this way, we have enough misogynistic crap to battle through.

bordermidgebite · 03/01/2022 13:03

If you can't be creative without being rude and insulting, you are not very good , pathetic really , if you can only be yourself at the expense of others

OhWhyNot · 03/01/2022 13:04

I don’t not see any hatred towards women in Dame Edna and Lilly Savage I find them both very funny characters both seen live and I found them extremely funny. Certainly wasn’t family entertainment. Dames in pantomime are usually for the adults (something has to break up the boredom)

I see some desperate attention seeking behaviour wanting to shock in some drag but I see this with many performers not just drag the intention is to shock.

The intention with such comedians as Jim Davidson isn’t to shock it’s to voice their view of the world that many of his audience will agree with so invites more racism

The shock type drag isn’t playing to an audience of women hating men it’s largely playing to an audience that isn’t their to back up their opinions it is there to have a good time for some that is shock tactics along with a bit of over the top glamour and glitter

I don’t like all drag some is offensive like some comedy is but I don’t believe it impacts society

OhWhyNot · 03/01/2022 13:05

*men hating women audience

Got that muddled …

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 13:11

Ah well that is just a matter of opinion and taste.

As I said there are many 'works of art' that I find dull, boring and unimaginative. Horses for courses.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 13:20

Yes I think because I dont watch rupaul (I've seen the odd bit of an episode) I perhaps haven't seen some of the more 'shocking' performances people are talking about here (and maybe I wouldn't find them as shocking as others, who knows)

Like all tv and media there are indeed desperate people who behave ridiculously to get attention.
I'm sure if I saw every drag artist in the entire world there would be some not to my taste. But that goes for everything, music, food, art, people.

I saw a drag artist perform once with a Voldemort type prosthetic face , I couldn't understand what the performance was and their 'face' freaked me out.
I understand all drag does that to some people.

For me it's just a matter of taste,no misogyny involved.

hangonamo · 03/01/2022 14:01

@Notimeforaname
I bet live drag is more shocking than Ru Paul - as Drag Race UK is on the BBC and regulated by Ofcom. They bleeped out most of one comedy routine in season 2 and that queen got a bit of a telling off and had it explained that breaking the taste and decency guidelines is not the same as being funny. I guess it depends on what you find shocking but I watch it with DD and it's fine, we are sometimes shocked by how good or bad the outfits are but not by the content.

Not the ones I go to !

The set up is the host speaks to the audience jokes/talks about current affairs, introduces each act.
Some mime to a song whilst dancing...some sing themselves, some have dancers, then there are games in the middle where audience members come up on stage to dance to a song , best dancer stays standing and wins drinks for the table/vouchers etc.
A group performance from all the acts on stage.

Other nights its bingo so just bingo with a couple of performances. Another night is a game show night.
Another night its just music with a drag artist DJing.
Most if this is/was pre restrictions of course!
This is in Ireland.

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 14:20

So why do they have to dress and act as a parody of a woman while doing these things?

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:22

Oh yes, sometimes it's like being at a fashion show. Some of the costumes are mental Grin good, bad an ugly. Some of the creations are amazing.

I have friends who can design, cut and sew some of the most amazing pieces from old duvet covers/curtains etc it's fantastic.

Omicrone · 03/01/2022 14:23

Could anyone enlighten me as to how this sort of thing is a) funny and b) not misogynistic?

I thought 'Essex Girl' jokes went out in the 90s, but apparently that's not the case? It's all right there, on the BBC.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:25

So why do they have to dress and act as a parody of a woman while doing it

They dont have to do anything. They want to.
And not all do dress like women. I've seen Voldemort type drag queens, drag kings, drag...aliens. All sorts.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:27

Omicrone

I'm unable to view it from Ireland..

So the ones that do. Why do they do it? Why the fake boobs and the bitchy, catchy persona which is meant to be representative of what women do? Why are they not just exploring the costumes/make up, without making it into a parody?

The aliens/Voldemort ect sounds like cosplay. Cosplaying a woman seems problematic at best.

Waitwhat23 · 03/01/2022 14:31

Should read catty persona

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:33

Unfortunately many things that should have gone out with the 90's are still around... Daniel O'Donnell for example, still on the telly here 🤣

I dont have BBC. I'm starting to wonder is there a bigger difference between uk drag and Irish drag?

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:35

Oh I couldn't tell you, youd have to ask them ! I couldn't possibly speak for every drag queen on why they personally do it.
I can only speak of my own experience/feelings with it.

Moolia · 03/01/2022 14:35

@Notimeforaname

Because you never say WHY. You never engaged with them saying why they think it IS and explain why you think they're wrong

But I dont think theyre wrong!!!!

Nobody's personal opinion or taste is wrong. I dont know how else to explain this too you. It wont go in

Nobody's personal opinion is wrong? Surely you don't really believe that.
AppleJane · 03/01/2022 14:36

An interesting debate. Regardless of which side you're on do you believe drag queens will be cancelled in the future in this cancel culture we live in. And if so when?

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:37

They were referred to as a drag artist, at a drag show 🤷‍♀️

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:40

My personal opinion on something I like, is not wrong, no.

I have a right to like drag. And I do. That's not wrong, for me anyway. Maybe your definition of wrong differs from mine?

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2022 14:42

I think its definitely not impossible! Everything is being 'cancelled'. I cant actually 'see' it happening but its possible. Who knows.
