Royal guard video kicking child in the way

DickMabutt73962 · 29/12/2021 23:23

I wasn't born and raised in the UK and am not into the culture of 'tradition' but I don't understand the majority of reactions to this video blaming the parent and saying of the guards 'it's their job'.

Can anyone more enlightened explain to me why this was necessary? As far as I can see the guard is marching, not saving London from attack. I don't see why a side-step wouldn't work. And if this is a register thing then maybe future control of how close members of the public are able to get in their path

Very clearly there was a collision, the child fell, the guardsman stumbled slightly just catching the child with his foot, then recovered himself and stepped right over the child.

I love the inactive voice - 'there was a collision'. As if it was nobody's fault.

JabNotInArm · 30/12/2021 12:02

Even the beefeaters are ex military.

@Theflamingnerd

Interestingly Beefeaters aren't just ex military, they have to have served for at least 22 hrs and have reached a certain rank (warrant officer) and hold a certain service medal

Tour de France finish, 2021. Big crowd, all behind barriers. www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2021/jun/26/tour-de-france-stage-one-live?page=with:block-60d5da7f8f0814bdddf9b1e2

Simonjt · 30/12/2021 12:03

@KeflavikAirport

the grand prix, tour de France etc. have safety barriers.
No they don’t, why are you pretending that they do?
mathanxiety · 30/12/2021 12:04

Anyone who disagrees has an agenda

And they hate the armed forces and don't appreciate their sacrifice, and their ancestors are turning in their graves....

The quote in italics is another example of authoritarianism.

What about these barriers in the tour de france

The thread that keeps on giving …

There has been a few this week Grin

KeflavikAirport · 30/12/2021 12:05

The grand prix and grand national don't keep the crowds behind barriers? Granted the TdF doesn't all the way but it certainly does where there is an expectation of crowds.

mathanxiety · 30/12/2021 12:06

The cyclist had no choice but to ride straight into that woman.

The Guardsman had a choice and chose the wrong option.

EvenTheReceptionStaffHaveLeft · 30/12/2021 12:06

Bingo. So close it to the public

And thus the terrorists win!

Bluewater is a terrorist target - close it!

Major sports fixtures are terrorist targets - close them!

Oxford Street is a terrorist target - close it!

Gatwick airport is a terrorist target - close it!

@mathanxiety is clearly not made of stern stuff if their answer to any sort of threat is to close everything down.

MadameMinimes · 30/12/2021 12:06

There’s barriers at the finish line, but not for most of the route. A woman, quite famously, caused a massive crash at the race this year by standing in the way with a sign at a section of the route that, like the vast majority of it, does not have barriers.

KeflavikAirport · 30/12/2021 12:07

Yes, if that woman had been behind a barrier she wouldn't have caused a pile up. It's obviously impractical to corrall thin crowds along the length of the TdF but you bet your butt they have barriers for key stages with dense crowds.

liveforsummer · 30/12/2021 12:08

An you see though the difference between the density and behaviour of the crowds at the finish of the Tour de France or grand national and those at the Tower of London? Most of the grand national course for instance is fenced for the horses benefit and can be walked right under by a child. At the finish there is huge amounts of crowding and bustling where people
could easily be pushed out in to the track so extra barriers are needed here

Simonjt · 30/12/2021 12:09

Have you ever been to watch any of the tour de france? I have, while quick (once they arrive) its quite fun, there are generally crowds at most places throughout the route. I’ve been twice, each time it has been heaving and we haven’t been near the start/end where the press etc are.
summertimerolls · 30/12/2021 12:09

At the Tower, no marching routes are marked, and when you sell tickets and make no mention of dangers on your website, can you blame people who expect it to be a visitor friendly experience

[(www.hrp.org.uk/tower-of-london/whats-on/guards-at-the-tower-of-london/]]

The “dangers” (bit dramatic) are indeed mentioned on the website

485bantuknots · 30/12/2021 12:10

Anyone who disagrees has an agenda

It really isn't that deep. A grown man walking into a child and stepping over them without even acknowledging them is so unnecessary. It's really simple and I'm not sure what agenda anyone could have

PurpleCarpets · 30/12/2021 12:10

This is how I feel, but clearly a lot Don’t! Even seen comments about me 'respecting' the country I've chosen to call home now! confused I'm not engaging with that kind of thinking, it's the kind of thinking that personally has a man walking right over a child.

Don't worry about it @DickMabutt73962. I've lived here since I was born, which was a very long time ago, and like any country it has some shit things which need changing, and some shit people with some shit attitudes!

AuntieJoyce · 30/12/2021 12:11

I'm guessing the parents had been at the Tower for maybe about ten minutes. I'm also guessing they consulted the website which says diddly squat about the need to be constantly on alert for armed men who will plough into you and give you no realistic advance warning

But they did give advanced warning as several posters who have visited have attested

Are you pissed? Grin

WindyState · 30/12/2021 12:11

I'm no fan of the RF or the military but this is such a non story. The guy has had it drilled into him that he can't stop. He clearly checks his stride and he went back to check the kid was ok.

Putting safety barriers out to prevent tourists getting in the way of people literally walking is absurd.

ILoveYou3000 · 30/12/2021 12:11

@TheFuckingDogs

Jesus that’s horrific. Just read the many posts defending this before watching and thought there’s so many defending it probably won’t actually be as bad as was being said but Jesus it really is! And all this “oh but what if there was a terrorist attack” there wasn’t and it would’ve been so easy to divert their steps a tiny bit to avoid aggressively stamping on an 8 year old kid. Kind of get the armed forces are trained to defend this kind of behaviour but so many people on here defending it - it’s shitty and wouldn’t it have been more lovely to have seen a soldier of HM service treating a child kindly than seeing this
🤦🏻‍♀️

Good lord above. Are you sure you watched the video? There was literally no "aggressive stamping" of any children.

You clearly haven't read all the comments. There have been quite a few allusions.

Bingbangbongbash · 30/12/2021 12:14

@mathanxiety

Kid stood in wrong place, got knocked over, that’s it , why on earth do you care so much?

I am here because I am gobsmacked at the number of people here who don't give a rat's ass that a child was trampled by a grown man.

I have often got the impression both in the UK in person and online here that there is a really deep streak of authoritarianism in Britain, and this thread confirms that.

I do hope you’re as active on threads about the poor child shot whilst shopping by your trigger-happy police. That’s something to be gobsmacked about.

What do you call something that’s actually horrific? This tendency to over dramatise non events is so boring. Horrific to my mind is genocide, or a child being deliberately killed. Describing a man doing his job and trying to step over a child in his way as ‘horrific’ is absolutely ridiculous.

Can you upload the full video of him going back to check on the kid please because I’ve not seen it?
