Cream not chocolate ice cream.

Went to a restaurant today and the option was black Forest Gateaux with chocolate ice cream, that just seems wrong to me!

The bin. No place in this world for it. Ever.

Vanillalime · 29/12/2021 21:27

@foxgoosefinch

(When I was at university my best friend inherited a 1970s fondue set… we held a fantastic 70s dinner party starting with prawn cocktail, then fondue, then a Black Forest gateau, washed down with vodka cocktails and Mateus Rose! Yum! 😍)
This is my perfect menu!!

It’s not Christmas unless I get Black Forest gateau for dessert. Morrisons is the only place local to me that sell a fresh one & it is lovely. Served with single pouring cream & a swirl of squirty cream!!

CrumpledCrumpet · 29/12/2021 21:39

On it’s own, it should contain ample cream and need no further accompaniments.

Prawn cocktail, chicken Kiev and Black Forest gateau might be my ultimate menu.

Where can you buy a good Black Forest gateau. Only had a crappy frozen one
Germany. 😁
foxgoosefinch · 29/12/2021 21:55

@Vanillalime — and make sure you have Abba Gold on repeat play!

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 05:59

fox what is this ‘repeat play? I get up and turn it over when each side is finished.

purplesequins · 30/12/2021 09:08

@shiningcuckoo

If you think Black Forest gateau is nasty then you've not had the real deal! My German colleague makes it for special occasions and it is heavenly and looks amazing.

I agree.
it doesn't need anything with it.

it would be akin to using pouring cream on french patisserie.

RedRobin100 · 30/12/2021 09:16

I recently got served a sticky toffee pudding with strawberry ice cream

Allllllllll sorts of wrong

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 09:20

red that is indeed wrong wrong wrong (was it good ?😂)

BlueSkyeThinker · 30/12/2021 09:20

In my 'child of the 70s' mind, 'proper' BFG as served in our local restaurant has chocolate vermicelli rolled around the outside, identical rosettes of thick cream with a cherry in the centre and comes with a small metal jug of cream that is always just on the point of turning. An adult has to say, 'ah ha! You'll be rolling out of here drunk with all the liqueur in that!' even though it only vaguely smells of kirsch and contains the alcoholic threat of a wine gum.

I miss BFG. Usurped by Sticky Toffee Pudding in the early 90s as the pub pud of choice, never to return.

NeverSurrender · 30/12/2021 09:27

Squirty cream only!

RampantIvy · 30/12/2021 09:31

@crankysaurus

A merlot
No. Merlot first, then cake. Red wine tastes like vinegar after chocolate cake.

I'm answer to the OP IMO it doesn't need anything else as it has loads of cream in it anyway.

CovidCorvid · 30/12/2021 09:35

Can you still buy Sarah Lee frozen ones? Used to love them!

Neverunderstood · 30/12/2021 09:40

@lollymad

An enormous spoon! Very 70s, but one of my absolute favourites.😁
Yep, Delia’s Black Forest gateau is an Xmas day staple in our household as well as being brought out on request for special occasions. It’s the only time the kirsch gets opened! 😂
Yousexybugger · 30/12/2021 09:41

Home made, it's a beaut. V dark chocolate and enough kirsch to start a forest fire stop it being too sickly sweet. Half of it's cream already though, I don't think it needs any more. Just tea for me with it (don't do coffee).

Swirlywoo · 30/12/2021 09:43

Kaffee und Kuchen innit. I'd eat one in the Black Forest or made by a very good baker.

Notjustanymum · 30/12/2021 09:57

Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte isn’t a relic, nor from the 1970’s having been invented in Germany in the early 20th century.
It’s ok to like it or not, so it’s your choice! And it’s made with whipped cream in it, so if you want more whipped cream or chantilly or even ice cream, knock yourself out!
Personally, I’d prefer a slice of it, 100% more than our own UK relic - brandy-soaked rich fruit cake - but that’s my choice😁

labazslovesliving · 30/12/2021 10:04

any gateaux should be served with cream. on Christmas day I was served Irish Cream Roulade with an egg cup of vanilla ice cream was not nice at all

"Where can you buy a good Black Forest gateau. Only had a crappy frozen one"

Germany.

This is very true!Grin

RampantIvy · 30/12/2021 10:20

Or make it yourself. If you follow a Delia or Mary Berry recipe to the letter it will work.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2021 10:22

I now want to watch a food series where different nationalities cook what is understood to be classic dishes. Plus an ‘agreed’ (ha!) benchmark. All judged by chefs/cooks from country in question.
Episode 1 - Black Forest Gateau.

Davros · 30/12/2021 12:28

I know a lot of you are thinking it. Can we get this straight:
Gateau is the singular
Gateaux is the plural
🔨 another gavel

Cherrysoup · 30/12/2021 12:43

Cherry brandy! Fabulous stuff.

BarkminsterBlue · 30/12/2021 12:46

A bin.

Cherries are delicious. Chocolate is delicious. Together they are disgusting. There is no fruit and no chocolate which is improved by being combined.

RampantIvy · 30/12/2021 14:37

I feel the same about chocolate and nuts @BarkminsterBlue. I love nuts, chocolate I can take it or leave it, but chocolate coated nuts, no thank you.
