Cream not chocolate ice cream.

Went to a restaurant today and the option was black Forest Gateaux with chocolate ice cream, that just seems wrong to me!

It's not from the 1970s. I had it as a kid well before that. Schwarzwälder Kirschtort. Been around for a hundred years.

A proper Black Forest Gateaux should not be served with cream or ice-cream. It's served with black coffee and that's it.

Oh no oh no, flash back of my childhood. Dm gave me a Black Forest Gateaux from age 8 every birthday 🤮. Evil stuff.

My 7yo DD specifically requested one for her birthday earlier this year, and has since regularly pestered me to make another 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cream is gross. I would just eat it on its own!

Reminds me of dinner parties in the 70s that my parents gave. My mum would make her own. It should never be served with ice cream or whipped cream, pouring cream only.

Whipped cream, if anything. I was always aghast at seeing it in a puddle of pouring cream. I too want to know where you can get a good one. I used to love it, but I don't think I've come across a really great one for years.

Proper black l forest gateaux is divine - sadly too many around are poor quality - I yearn for a proper gateaux

It’s the 70s. Saturated fats and sugar aren’t bad yet. They’re still good for you

The thick whipped double cream is already in the cake. There does not need to be any more poured over or around it. This is not like custard.

It is a retro goddess that needs no enhancement.

Try the M&S one. It looks more like a cake than the traditional gateau but it’s bloody delicious.

I do t like it but I agree with PP either a small amount of single cream of a glass of full bodied red wine.
Chocolate ice cream is just weird !

Cream. Vanilla ice cream if you absolutely must but not another flavoured ice cream. I haven't had BFG in years, really fancy it now.

If you think Black Forest gateau is nasty then you've not had the real deal! My German colleague makes it for special occasions and it is heavenly and looks amazing.
