I usually keep them but over the years there's so many feel bad binning them but I hate clutter and junk

OP posts:
Strugglingtodomybest · 29/12/2021 14:40

I recycle them. I keep them up for a couple of days though, it's the Easter cards that go straight in the recycling bin around here!

funinthesun19 · 29/12/2021 14:43

I keep the ones from close family members. All the rest go in the recycling.

husbandcallsmepickle · 29/12/2021 14:45
@Vegetalienne I do the same...I hate clutter. I have a very minimalist house and I don't have mantelpiece so I open, read them and pop them in the bin. I'm not sure what people expect me to do with them Confused
I would suggest that the majority of people put cards on shelves/bookcases for the Christmas period. Do you bin all your birthday cards too?

DorotheaHomeAlone · 29/12/2021 14:46

Cut up fronts for gift cards. Recycle backs.

BlueShirtGirl · 29/12/2021 14:54

Cut the pretty ones into gift tags for next year, recycle the shit ones!

Marmelace · 29/12/2021 14:56

The ones I get with no glitter go to my neighbour to use as templates for her patchwork quilts. Unfortunately I only got a few this year.

Vegetalienne · 29/12/2021 14:58

Chill out!

I just imagined you receiving a card, binning it , pursing your lips and muttering about anyone daring to send you card. Sounds pretty joyless to bin immediately.

Me chill out! I answered OPs question and you took issue with my answer. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Cards don’t bring me ‘joy’. If they bring you joy, good for you. Try accepting that people are different....a New Years resolution for you maybe?

Marmelace · 29/12/2021 14:58

My nanna used to reuse the best ones and display them year after year.

I recycle any birthday cards too, again I only get them from a few people as my friends and family know I don’t really like cards. Many of them are the same, we do birthday gifts or do something nice together but generally, no cards.

escapingthecity · 29/12/2021 15:04

Cut the fronts up to be gift labels for next Christmas's presents. Recycle the backs.

Vegetalienne · 29/12/2021 15:06

And I don’t have bookcases because I don’t have many books. I use a kindle. That’s probably joyless too. 😂

Progress2019 · 29/12/2021 15:09

@husbandcallsmepickle I’ve got a funny feeling bookcases aren’t going to feature in these houses.

Please, if you’re going to bin your cards immediately, let the sender know so they can stop sending to you. Nice cards and stamps aren’t cheap.

I sometimes make gift tags, and occasionally keep a extra nice card. I must have accidentally put my mother in laws card away with the decorations last year - I don’t remember doing so, but she died suddenly in the summer, so it was lovely to find her card when we decorated the house this Christmas.

grapewine · 29/12/2021 15:09

Recycle after reading. Same with birthday cards unless very special messages. Can't be doing with the clutter.

Marmelace · 29/12/2021 15:10

No that to me is fantastic. I've always had physical books and felt awful getting rid, now I don't have that problem.
RampantIvy · 29/12/2021 15:11

@Vegetalienne

Thankfully we only get a few from older family members. They’re put in the recycling straight after opening.
How joyless Hmm
WakeUpLockie · 29/12/2021 15:12

Cut the front off for gift tags for next year. Only got about 6 cards this year so that tradition is about to end!!! :(

AuntieMarys · 29/12/2021 15:12

Binned yesterday

I have told them but they still send them.

Sciurus83 · 29/12/2021 15:17

Display for the Christmas period and enjoy looking at them, then recycle. Will keep one or two special ones occasionally. Couldn't imagine keeping them all, your kids are just going to have to chuck them when you're dead, or you'll have to do it when you move and it's not like they're something you look at again regularly. I think their function is to bring joy for the time period and then to depart

Bookcase
Window sill
Card holder
Card string

You know... the usual thing. It's not exactly a new thing.

Marmelace · 29/12/2021 15:23

Why are people getting bitchy over Christmas cards and what people do with them? It's ridiculous.

galacticpixels · 29/12/2021 15:25

We only get 2 or 3 every year and always from older family members so we just keep them as they're nice to have.

FruitMelange · 29/12/2021 15:27

Mine go straight into recycling too. I just have nowhere convenient to put them where they don't keep falling off, or over. It brings me joy to get them out of the way tbh

Ti's the season falalalalala.

Nothing says festive like throwing a dig about cards and bookcases. Strangest assumption I've seen yet.

Anyway, I keep them with the decorations and hang them again next year as my young DD loves to keep them. Or I keep the front for crafts.

ufucoffee · 29/12/2021 15:31

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

Take the backs off and use them as shopping lists and bin the fronts.
What a bloody good idea. I'm going to do that. Much easier than having the list on my phone.
