I like Yankie Candles. My mum has spent a small fortune on three Neom ones for me, which are in a lovely box, but I won't enjoy burning them anymore than I would 3 that were quarter the price. I'm still very grateful for them though.

Toadsinholes · 26/12/2021 09:31

I hate Christmas full stop. There is nothing I like about it - I hate the dark, cold weather, I hate spending money on things just for the sake of it, I hate sitting around & everything being closed, I hate the music, I hate eating too much, I hate seeing family I don’t really like, I hate the assumption that we all care & all want to ‘celebrate’ it (celebrate what exactly? I’m an atheist)
As soon as the children leave home we are going somewhere hot, sunny & Christmas free. Can’t wait.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 26/12/2021 09:33

Putting yourself out a bit for other people is a good thing for DC to learn and can be fun for them if you approach it the right way. Kids enjoy feeling useful and important.

Seeing family members, even annoying ones (though I only mean normally annoying - not if you have experienced abuse or anything terrible), is part of Christmas, and a good tradition. Having said that, there's no rule that you have to see them on the 25th itself.

ImInStealthMode · 26/12/2021 09:33

I'm usually among the Babyliss & Harding haters, because I think it's such an easy / cheap / didn't put any thought into it option. The amount of B&H bubble bath I received in the 6 years I lived in a flat without a bath was absurd.

BUT I received a bottle of bubble bath this year in addition to something else and it's lovely! Nice heavy glass bottle with a Christmas scene on it Smile

Camembear · 26/12/2021 09:34

Agree @ddl1 I’d like snow to be less prominent in the Christmas theme generally because it’s unusual to get snow. I think a lot of our Christmas imagery come from American films.

Some of our “favourite” Christmas songs need to be retired permanently for something new!

StEval · 26/12/2021 09:34

Why some people care so much about what total strangers have for Christmas?

Because some people need everyone else to be wrong in order for them to feel ok.
Really strange mentality

shinynewapple21 · 26/12/2021 09:35

@ThirdElephant

I want mashed potato. Everyone else prefers roasties so that's what we have, but I still miss mash.

Why not have both? I love potato so always have both roast and mash.

Have never done Yorkshire pud or cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner though. I love cauliflower cheese - but not as a side to a roast with gravy. Yuk.

Bunnycat101 · 26/12/2021 09:35

My unpopular opinion is there is too much pressure. I said last night to my husband that we need to do less next year as we’re knackered, burnt out etc. we had two events cancelled for covid and if we’d have gone, we’d have been even more knackered. I’m going to be much more mindful next year as the children have just become a bit overwhelmed with the build up. Through December my youngest has had two bouts of illness so juggling work, childcare and disturbed sleep and now has a sickness bug and have had to cancel plans for next few days.

There was a thread recently where the OP said Christmas should be in the summer. I’m coming round to that idea as winter sickness through December has been rubbish.

Frickin love a Yankee candle. Who doesn’t like them??
BorderlineHappy · 26/12/2021 09:37

Giving cash for Christmas is a cop out
It's not,my kids got cash this year because that's what they asked for.

icedcoffees · 26/12/2021 09:38

@Camembear Yankee candles give me migraines Sad

I burn wax melts daily but I can't stand the Yankee brand. They're too overpowering and artificial smelling for me.

MrsToothyBitch · 26/12/2021 09:38

Quite a few Christmas foods are actually revolting- Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, turkey, sprouts, cranberry sauce.

Bakedbean22 · 26/12/2021 09:38

@Burnt0utMum

Christmas Dinner is just a big faff that no one really enjoys. We had lamb and rice with lots of side salad, delicious and every enjoyed it.

My kids don't believe in santa and never have done because I didn't want to lie to them and it works fine for us. The magic of Christmas is definitely still there and they still enjoy talking about santa as a fictional character.

Our decorations go up in November because I love Christmas and want to enjoy it for as long as possible.

I also love kitchen appliances and household items as gifts. Would rather have something useful than gift for the sake of it.

Do you tell your kids not to tell other children? Always thought if some kids knew they would just tell everyone else.
Trolltrotters · 26/12/2021 09:38

Christmas jumpers and songs look and sound ridiculous on Boxing Day and beyond.

Turkey is rank. A lot of work, cost and hassle for not much return.

People buy way too much chocolate and food at Christmas.

Crackers and cards are litter.

Other than that, I really love Christmas Xmas Smile

PivotPivotPivottt · 26/12/2021 09:39

I don't like pigs in blankets

Immaculatemisconception · 26/12/2021 09:40

I love cooking and eating my Christmas dinner. We love cranberry sauce and have it whenever we have chicken or turkey.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 26/12/2021 09:40

I don't mind any toiletries sets I get, it all gets used!
I like all chocolate and I don't really care that they've changed the recipe for Dairy Milk.
I love getting presents and opening them is my favourite part of the day.
I like to give my kids lots of presents and think 'something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read' is totally joyless.
I like having PIL here and MIL in particular helps me no end.
Agree that cooing dinner is not that hard and also have no idea how my mum managed to long it out so much.

Chasingaftermidnight · 26/12/2021 09:42

Bread sauce is disgusting stodge.

Roast potatoes are rubbish unless cooked from scratch with goose fat.

cushioncovers · 26/12/2021 09:45

My unpopular opinion is that giving boxes of chocolates and biscuits at Xmas is a cop out. Unless that person has specifically asked for them.

In regards to people finding cooking Xmas lunch stressful I think it's often because we have a large number of guests to cook for on Xmas day rather than the usual family.

AnybodyAnywhere · 26/12/2021 09:45

I love turkey.

We used to always host big Christmas get togethers and I enjoyed catering for them but now it’s just me and DH so we just have a nice dinner, sit around in ‘loungewear’ and watch crap on TV 😊.

Marianne1234 · 26/12/2021 09:45

Buying someone toiletries is an utter cop out of a gift.

VikingOnTheFridge · 26/12/2021 09:45

Lots of people are nowhere near as good at choosing Christmas presents as they think they are.

invisibleoldwoman · 26/12/2021 09:46

@RussianSpy101

Cauliflower cheese is disgusting and I don’t know how anyone feels it has a place on any plate, let alone Christmas dinner.
Exactly! I have never understood this. I like cauliflower cheese and macaroni cheese but they have no place on a plate with meat and gravy. Yuck.
Onlinedilema · 26/12/2021 09:46

Having steak for Christmas dinner sounds very appealing. I too think it's so much faff and for what?
My unpopular opinion is I'd much rather be sat on a far flung foreign beach, sun on my face, listening to the gently lapping of the sea, than be cooking for umpteen folks.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 26/12/2021 09:48
