Also I don’t understand people that say they don’t do the whole Santa thing as they ‘don’t want to lie to their kids’

Whilst they are right, it obviously is a lie, but I think the good outweighs the lie. I think most people agree.

Santa is the magical part of Christmas for kids and once they don’t believe, it’s not the same. I think what a shame for the kids that never get to experience this.

Totally different for family’s that don’t celebrate Christmas at all that’s different or if they follow a different religion etc but just because you don’t want to lie to kids, I find it bizarre

Pickles89 · 26/12/2021 10:24

Mince pies are a fucking abomination

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2021 10:24

Gift bags are naff, I'd rather see a badly wrapped present that a gift bag sealed with sellotape and don't get me started on presents in a gift bag with a crumpled bit of tissue over it or even worse a wrapped present inside a gift bag.

You see, opinions like this (if real) are why I'd skirt gift giving altogether. Some people are unbelievably particular about stuff which just doesn't matter. You hand a present over, they see what it comes covered in for about 10 seconds, then they remove it. I really don't see the issue with any of the things you mention if the present is hidden and they love the present!

topcat2014 · 26/12/2021 10:25

I like Boxing day more.
I don't need to receive presents. (Although I love it if DD buys something)
I don't drink anymore (50 now, and not worth hangover)
I love Mrs Brown's Boys

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/12/2021 10:25

@Pickles89

Mince pies are a fucking abomination
I used to think that till I had some lovely home made ones.
starfishofbethlehem · 26/12/2021 10:25

@purpleme12

Why do people not like them?
I dont like them because the one I tried was too drying for my skin. Other things in their range may not be, but I'm not inclined to try just in case.
CounsellorTroi · 26/12/2021 10:26

@ThirdElephant

I want mashed potato. Everyone else prefers roasties so that's what we have, but I still miss mash.
We have roasties and mash.

Christmas pudding is vastly overrated. Yesterday we had totally home made Christmas cake and ice cream.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/12/2021 10:27

I would quite like a footstool, and I wouldn't feel sad if someone gave me one.

But they didn't, so I'm going to buy myself a really cute one, which I'm also not upset about.

CounsellorTroi · 26/12/2021 10:28

The worst Christmas song is The Carpenters' one though, so depressing!

Which song is that?

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/12/2021 10:28

I also love sprouts, as do my boys! DH, less so. But I have to prep the sprouts and yesterday I also had to test them to ensure they weren't still crunchy! I don't like them boiled to death, but I do like them to be at least cooked properly!

I also bloody love turkey. And hate ham, but only marginally less than I hate gammon.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/12/2021 10:29

I also love Christmas pudding, Christmas cake and mince pies. Haven't had any yet this year though - we were too full yesterday on Christmas Day, and I've barely eaten anything today either Xmas Shock, so tomorrow is pudding and mince pie day!

cloudiestdays · 26/12/2021 10:30

I prefer shop bought roast potatoes, yorkshires bread sauce and gravy to home made. (But actually I don't really like roast dinners much!!)

I don't care a jot about what gifts people get me or if they don't at all, I don't care about thank you letters from kids (or adults for that matter!!)

I like Thorntons, quality street, roses (you get the picture!!😁) and would be happy with any of those as a present!

I like pretty much any hand wash or bubble bath etc and would be happy to have those as a present too!

I'm pretty low maintenance really especially as I actually don't like receiving presents much at all so my dh never has to worry about presents for me!

BettyfromBristol · 26/12/2021 10:31

Everyone over ten looks ridiculous in a Christmas jumper.

Juletide · 26/12/2021 10:32

Cheap Christmas puddings are nicer than the expensive ones.

ivykaty44 · 26/12/2021 10:34

Id rather just me and dd for xmas and all other family do what they want to do

families getting together seems to put pressure on everyone and no one really gets to do what they want to do

we spent yesterday morning doing what we wanted to do and got back together cooked lunch and sat and tinged watched a series on tv drinking and being merry

id rather spend it solo than pleasing a lot of other people who in return aren't getting what they want either

OooPourUsACupLove · 26/12/2021 10:37

@TopTabby

Also I hate Fairytale of New York, overplayed & reminds me of fraught, hot shopping trips with toddlers!

God yes! It’s a horrible song about an alcoholic gambler who has wasted his and his partner’s life.

That line “You took my dreams from me … I kept them with my own, can’t make it on my own”….all I think is “Selfish fucker! Her dreams are for her, not for you to take to support yours!”

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 26/12/2021 10:39

@BettyfromBristol

Everyone over ten looks ridiculous in a Christmas jumper.
Isn’t that the point?
daisychain01 · 26/12/2021 10:42

DH and I go Christmas shopping together, go into our favourite shops, choose a couple of nice things each, go home and wrap them up. Zero drama, zero bust up about what cheap nasty awful gifts we've got, no surprises on Christmas morning because we aren't 6, we're adults and Christmas should be a nice day like the other days of the year.

If Christmas is shite, if you feel under appreciated and unloved, then it's probably a sign there are problems on the other 364 days that need to be dealt with. Expecting Christmas Day to be sugarplum fairies and Cartier watches ain't gonna happen if your relationship is already dodgy and your partner is an arse, so don't overexpect and get disappointed.

5128gap · 26/12/2021 10:42

Christmas with young DC is NOT magical. Playing with them and their new toys is very dull.
5 minutes of 'snuggling up with hot chocolate' on Xmas eve has me longing for the pub.
Teens are really easy to buy for if you're properly interested in them and note what they are into.
I like playing monopoly.
Time out for 'A lovely bubbly bath with a glass of wine and your new book' is not a treat at Christmas, or ever.
I couldn't care less what people buy me. I like or can use pretty much anything.
Christmas is as much hard work as you make it for a lot of women, as its typically women who want all the peripheral faff. Your DP and DCs won't probably care about much beyond the presents and food; and buying and wrapping gifts and cooking a roast is not tantamount to a month in the salt mines.

Hospedia · 26/12/2021 10:43

Please say this louder for the people in the back!

Taking care of your basic needs such as hygiene, sleep, and eating is not the same as self-care or a break.

BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 26/12/2021 10:48

@Faevern

I think Bayliss and Harding is viewed (by some) as a poor mans Moulton Brown, they look similar. I use it to refill the everyday hand wash and lotion bottles.

@DreamerSeven I roasted my sprouts yesterday bloody lovely they were.

@antisocialsocialclub we found some popping crackers in the loft I bought in a sale one year not only did they bang but blasted confetti everywhere. Those little screwdrivers are handy though.

The perpetual B and H hatred is typical of many on MN's need to feel themselves superior, someone will soon be along to tell you it's not Moulton, it's Molton! If you believe 25 % of what people say on MN you'll be fairly near the mark.
godmum56 · 26/12/2021 10:50

@Sprogonthetyne

I also like them and would happily munch my way through a box of Thorntons.

For my unpopular opinion: I think pretty much every Christmas condiment is overrated. If anyone actually like bread sauce or cranberry then we'd eat them all year round.

I do
Davros · 26/12/2021 10:51

And I'd have bread sauce with every roast every week all year if it was easier to make in single portions. I've tried freezing it but then cooking a single portion in the microwave tends to make it into a small scone.
I buy bread sauce in a packet from M&S all year round, reconstituted with milk. It's surprisingly good, a nice hint of clove, and we often have it with sausages.

yup this absolutely
OnaBegonia · 26/12/2021 10:52

For all the sprout lovers, I walk by a sprout farm on my dog walks, I must ask who they supply to keep MN lovers fed all year round Grin
