Because I've just been to Aldi for booze and they have some in the chiller that's £3.99! I thought that was really expensive. Dh makes masses of it for next to nothing so I couldn't believe the price. Is this a fair price? Maybe we should be selling it 😉£££

Accidentally left voting. No need for it.

Buy, because if you make it then you do end up with masses of it and then we get sick of eating it. Buying it means no waste for us.

Etinoxaurus · 23/12/2021 12:26

Gosh that’s expensive. I do and made some last weekend and froze the rest. If I remember it’ll appear on the table. Previous years I’ve done it in the slow cooker on the day, freeing up hob space. I’ll warm through the pudding this year in the slow cooker- probably in a bedroom again freeing up space.

mumda · 23/12/2021 12:26

I would make it. As if making mulled wine: red wine and assorted Christmasy spices.

SirChenjins · 23/12/2021 12:27

I make it, but only because DS1 and I love the stuff and can happily eat our own body weight in it. Strong winds ahead in the Chen household Grin

Odoreida · 23/12/2021 12:27

Yes we always have it and always make it. It lasts for ages and goes so well with ham etc, it's one of my favourite leftovers.

QuiltedHippo · 23/12/2021 12:28

Make it, Delias recipe and usually in advance as it freezes well. Goes well with sausages and mash if you have leftovers

TragoCardboardCopper · 23/12/2021 12:29

No. Someone I was eating with once observed that it tastes like horses smell, that put into words why I've never liked the stuff!

Disclaimer - I like it pickled, and I like horses (not pickled)

CinnamonEstella · 23/12/2021 12:33

I tend to buy so we can just have a small amount. I get it in a sachet from the east European shop, it doesn't need refrigerating until you open it, so lasts ages in the cupboard. Can't remember the price but not £3.99 (maybe £1.50?)

If I was more organised (and had a bigger freezer) I would make my own, and freeze it in portions.

Doing this right now - it's stewing away in the oven Grin

I didn't know you could freeze it, that's very helpful as we'd end up eating it all week otherwise!
HoardingSamphireSaurus · 23/12/2021 12:40

Yep. I made some last month to save having the make it today. Ate one portion and have the rest in the freezer. We'll eat some next week and the last of it in the New Year, with the pie I will make from all of the leftover leftovers 🙂

longtompot · 23/12/2021 12:43

I make it. My red cabbage was 19p! The rest won't be more than a pound and if you have masses it freezes really well.

MargosKaftan · 23/12/2021 12:44

Buy it as I dont like a lot, dcs hate it and dh is the only one who really likes it, but cba to make it himself. But then for Christmas, pretty much all our sides are going to be pre-prepared this year as its just us on Christmas day and I'm doing minimal cooking. Did the same last year, just threw things in the oven /microwave at various intervals between playing with the kids and it was perfect.

Oddbutnotodd · 23/12/2021 12:45

Made mine today. A combination of recipes. Put fresh cranberries and wine in mine along with apple and cinnamon. Will keep in fridge for a while.

Malbecfan · 23/12/2021 12:46

Mine is in the slow cooker now. I'll put a couple of portions in the fridge, the rest can go in the freezer. The slow cooker was full, but hopefully in 4 hours, it will have gone down somewhat otherwise we'll be eating it until the end of January

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/12/2021 12:47

Yup 19p a cabbage. Made it yesterday. Delia is definitely the best recipe, although I've not put quite as much onion or apple in, and she's a bit stingy on the spices.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/12/2021 12:48

@Malbecfan I had a bit of a problem converting the 2.5 hrs @ 150 degrees to the slow cooker, I chickened out of 6 hrs on low because it didn't even seem to be melting the butter and I stuck it on high for 2 hours, but it's ruined the colour. Any tips?

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 23/12/2021 13:06

A bit more acidic stuff, vinegar or lemon juice.

Dozer · 23/12/2021 13:08

Dislike making it but wouldn’t want to pay £4 for ready made.

VestaTilley · 23/12/2021 13:09

Yes we eat it and I make my own braised red cabbage.

If you want to buy it the M&S one is nice. Not sure why you’re surprised at the price; Christmas food is always expensive!

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/12/2021 13:10

I have made some for the first time. There are only three of us for Christmas Dinner now so I have a good sized portion in the fridge and two in the freezer.

Blupblup · 23/12/2021 13:12

Mine is simmering away at the moment, we love red cabbage so it always gets eaten. Bought stuff is like anything else, you pay a premium for not needing ti spend the time making it. I've bought it in the past when I've been too knackered to even contemplate shredding a cabbage.

Omicrone · 23/12/2021 13:15

I made it once for Xmas and it absolutely stank out the entire house and DS begged me not to do it the following year Grin

Probably because it was 20p for my red cabbage and it was Aldi.
