To ask if you eat spiced red cabbage with Christmas dinner ? Do you make or buy?

Because I've just been to Aldi for booze and they have some in the chiller that's £3.99! I thought that was really expensive. Dh makes masses of it for next to nothing so I couldn't believe the price. Is this a fair price? Maybe we should be selling it 😉£££

I can't find the frozen I thought I saw, but this isn't a bad price, particularly with the 2 for £3 offer.
Great for small families.

V expensive. As others have said, it freezes well so I tend to make a batch earlier in the year, stink the house out then and defrost for Xmas and other autumnal type meals.

Isseywith3witchycats · 23/12/2021 15:03

i bought a tray one from the chiller in Aldi yesterday it was £2.49 not £3.99 i only bought it because there are two people who will be here on Saturday who like red cabbage so i am not going to all the bother for two people

withiceplease · 23/12/2021 15:05

Red cabbages 11p from lidl yesterday. Made it last night, ate half and froze but I like cooking

They also have raw red cabbages for 19p I think! It's an easy thing to make especially if you throw it in a food processor, I'd certainly not pay 3.99 for some, probably horribly sweet if Aldi's other stuff is anything to go by,
BendicksBittermints4Breakfast · 23/12/2021 15:11

@Oddbutnotodd

Made mine today. A combination of recipes. Put fresh cranberries and wine in mine along with apple and cinnamon. Will keep in fridge for a while.
More or less what I do, I add a bit of balsamic vinegar to cut the sweetness of the cranberries. I make it in the wok, shredded very finely in the food processor with a bit of onion, takes half an hour max, it tastes better a day or so later too,
Chishnfips · 23/12/2021 15:15

It lasts for months in the fridge without going off and we have it all year round not just for Christmas. It's good for pickles and coleslaw.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/12/2021 15:18

This thread is way better than all the doom and gloom! Loving it.

ReviewingTheSituation · 23/12/2021 15:19

Mine went in the slow cooker overnight last night (to free the slow cooker up for the ham today). 3/4 of a cabbage (leaving the rest for slaw), an apple, an onion a good glug of mulled wine and a small glug of balsamic vinegar. Took about 10 mins to prep and cost hardly anything (mulled wine was left over from several xmases ago, so not counting the cost of that).
Will reheat in the oven when the turkey comes out to rest.

PickAChew · 23/12/2021 15:22

I make some early in December and freeze it in portions. The apple I put in ends up costing more than the cabbage.

Juniper68 · 23/12/2021 15:37

@ISpyCobraKai

I saw a lot of decent looking "fancy", frozen veg this year, in I think Morrisons. I considered buying some just for normal use as living on my own I find frozen veg a really good buy now.
Frozen veg has more nutrients too.

Turns out I made 7.5kg of it yesterday. I had very purple hands. Some has gone to my parents, some will come to PIL for Christmas day and I have put the rest bagged up in the freezer. I will have the chance of it with a Sunday roast at least until July Grin. Love the stuff

EvilPea · 23/12/2021 15:50

I make it in the slow cooker at Christmas but buy it due to waste the rest of the year. Eat half with one roast, freeze the other half for the next.

Love it with stew and mash

Made mine in the slow cooker Sunday and froze it in 2 containers, one will be reheated in the microwave with a knob of butter for Christmas Dinner and then go in the bubble and squeak. The other portion will probably come out New Year's day with whatever we have then. I think the recipe I followed was similar to the Delia one, but I tend to add random other things and go off piste slightly with recipes. It did make the house smell like Christmas though.

I also made my cheesy leeks the other day and froze them.

Juniper68 · 23/12/2021 19:55

I went off on a tandem and made cabbage soup then started hand painting Christmas gift tags.

Plus might have been to the pub where a friend works? Wink

I'm going to tidy up and make the red cabbage. Or maybe leave it for DH? He's not working tomorrow.

It's been a family Christmas dish for as long as I can remember. Red cabbage, onion, apples, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon, cloves and a pinch of salt. Lasts forever and the big challenge is finding the cloves before you bite down on them!

BigYellowHat · 24/12/2021 07:42

Ooh that sounds yummy. Not something we ever have but might have to now.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/12/2021 07:43

Make it, find it much tastier. Freezes well too.

thistimelastweek · 24/12/2021 07:46

Thank fuck for this thread. Just remembered I've got red cabbage to cook today! (Delia all the way.)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/12/2021 07:54

I usually make it but this year the run up to Christmas has been manic with work and also some personal stuff, so I've cheated and bought it from Waitrose. Can't remember how much I paid but yes, like most pre prepared stuff, it will have been a lot in comparison to making it yourself. I've also bought frozen Yorkies because I cba to make them on Christmas Day especially as I don't think they should even be part of Christmas Dinner. But the rest of the family love them....

RowsOfHolly · 24/12/2021 08:39

We make it.

Red cabbages are 19p each in Sainsbury’s and Lidl this week.

Also home made is MUCH nicer. It isn’t difficult, and freezes well in advance.

expatmigrant · 24/12/2021 08:44

Love it and make my own. No idea how much to buy ready made.

Eminybob · 24/12/2021 08:49

I make it and freeze it to have a little taste of Christmas all year round.
Although this year I have decided to pare it down a bit and just make half the amount I usually do.
In fact, that’s my job for this morning. Off to the kitchen!
