Because I've just been to Aldi for booze and they have some in the chiller that's £3.99! I thought that was really expensive. Dh makes masses of it for next to nothing so I couldn't believe the price. Is this a fair price? Maybe we should be selling it 😉£££

And I’m making stuffing this year for the first time ever, I usually buy.

Secretselkie17 · 24/12/2021 10:06

I make it.. and use spiced apple cider instead of red wine! I’d never buy something that easy to make & it makes your kitchen smell great

gsaoej · 24/12/2021 10:11

I do actually think it’s a fair price. It’s quite an effort to make (on top of making other stuff) and there are several more ingredients than just red cabbage. I have just made some though.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 24/12/2021 10:27

I make ours. But when my girls were little and I was a single parent, working part-time and studying, I bought it readymade because it’s one thing whose quality isn’t impaired by whacking it in the microwave.

I think that price is fair tbh.

Yes, wouldnt be Christmas dinner without a bit of spiced red cabbage (made to my mum's recipe). And yes I either make my own or my mum makes it.

I'm going to make some today. A big tray of it and add sage I have grown.

Dh made the spiced red cabbage this morning and keeps saying how gorgeous it is. Think he's excelled himself Grin

Made the stuffing. It's astounding! Sausage meat, stuffing mix from lidl, chopped roast chestnuts and mixed herbs. Baked 45 minutes. It's gorgeous.

Oh yes @Skyeheather it freezes really well! Mine’s made, frozen and ready to heat through on the day (with a big tablespoon of duck fat added to it 😋).

I make mine with orange juice/zest, redcurrant jelly, cinnamon, cloves, juniper berries and plenty of black pepper. I want some now!!

DoubleDeckerSwimmer · 24/12/2021 14:48

Just made mine..... hhhhmm... is in the oven now!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 24/12/2021 14:53

I’ve stopped using whole cloves in mine - I use ground so no one gets any nasty surprises!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 24/12/2021 14:54

Oh I forgot red onion! It also has red onion and a little bit of sugar.

DoubleDeckerSwimmer · 24/12/2021 15:33

Red Cabbage – can be made well ahead and frozen
Ingredients
1 medium red cabbage, quartered, cored and sliced
2 red onions, peeled and sliced
80g/3oz dried cranberries
2 Bramley apples, peeled, cored and grated
1 tsp ground cinnamon
25g/1oz demerara sugar
3 tbsp red wine vinegar
Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 170C/3325F/Gas 3.
  2. Mix the cabbage with the rest of the ingredients and put in an ovenproof dish.
  3. Season well and cover with foil.
  4. Bake in the oven for 60-90 minutes until the cabbage is tender and juicy. Mix the ingredients together 2-3 times during cooking.
  5. Allow to cool and store in the fridge, or freeze.

This makes a lot, so you could freeze it into more than one portion.

Reheat when needed.

So I have my cabbage all done, and 2 types of stuffing, one is bacon, cranberry and chestnut from a bbc good food recipe. Looks amazing but not going to cook it until tomorrow so can’t vouch for how it tastes. And then another one which is just sausage meat with a pack of posh (not paxo) sage and onion mix mixed in. That’s for DH who is a little less adventurous Grin

waitingpatientlyforspring · 24/12/2021 16:36

Always made it but not doing it this year as DH sick of it and kids don't really like it.
