Because I've just been to Aldi for booze and they have some in the chiller that's £3.99! I thought that was really expensive. Dh makes masses of it for next to nothing so I couldn't believe the price. Is this a fair price? Maybe we should be selling it 😉£££

I usually make it, and I LOVE it, but have bought it this year because we're both working right up until tomorrow and there isnt enough to time to do everything as well as entertain 2 boys and attempt to have a clean house.

Agree that you end up with enough to feed 5000 people when you make it, but have frozen in the past - always a nice addition to a post christmas buffet or sausages. God i love it.

NotMeNoNo · 23/12/2021 13:21

Make - it freezes really well in portions, and you get loads out of one cabbage.

Juniper68 · 23/12/2021 13:21

I'm going to have a go at making it in the slow cooker but with Delia's ingredients. One less thing for dh to do.
I'm having 2 Christmas meals. The first is at a pub with service users and staff at 12. It's a 3 course carvery so I'll go easy on the main. And have dh's delicious meal at dinner with my adult dss and dh.

Make it and freeze the extra or sometimes give some to family for their Christmas dinner, but depends when we see them. I already make it on the 23rd as it taste better after a couple of days Smile

magicstar1 · 23/12/2021 13:28

I buy it because my brother's girlfriend is the only person who'll eat it, and I wouldn't know if it tasted right.
I got it in Aldi here in Ireland and it was only €2.99.

RavingAnnie · 23/12/2021 13:34

@deadlanguage

Buy, because if you make it then you do end up with masses of it and then we get sick of eating it. Buying it means no waste for us.
It freezes really well. You can then have it throughout the next few months with roast dinners.
MsAgnesDiPesto · 23/12/2021 13:40

We make and eat it throughout the winter, but at Christmas we have proper sauerkraut (DH has Eastern European roots) which we make on Christmas Eve.

Braised red cabbage is so cheap and easy to make that I wouldn’t normally consider buying it already made, though I would be tempted at Christmas when convenience is important!

bizboz · 23/12/2021 13:44

Always make it but agree there can be too much left over. I might just use half the cabbage this year and make coleslaw with the rest.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/12/2021 13:44

I had it with goose once, it was lovely. But no, not making it.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 23/12/2021 13:48

Make the Delia recipe, freeze in three portions. We all love it so have it regularly throughout the year with toad in the hole, and roasts.

deadlanguage · 23/12/2021 13:49

@RavingAnnie we don’t eat roast dinners very often (I don’t eat meat) and there’s only two of us so it’s just not worth the freezer space. One cabbage’s worth would probably take a year to eat!

RavingAnnie · 23/12/2021 13:52

There's only two of us too but we really like red cabbage. And we have two freezers. It's nice with sausages and mash too.

NdujaWannaDance · 23/12/2021 13:57

Some years yes, some years no.

I always make it. It's easy to make in advance and chuck in the oven to warm through while the potatoes are doing.

ISpyCobraKai · 23/12/2021 13:59

If I was having it now I'd buy it.
Homemade is much cheaper, better and freezes brilliantly but with just me it's not worth it.

Thepineapplemystery · 23/12/2021 14:00

I bought some today from sainsburys, was £2.50 I think. I usually make it, but we're low on fridge and freezer space this year.

hangrylady · 23/12/2021 14:08

I buy it because I simply can't be arsed. £3.99 is worth it for less hassle.

Chocolatewheatos · 23/12/2021 14:17

We don't usually but some came in our M&S veg box so I'll serve it. I'd never be arsed to make it, I can't even be arsed to make yorkshires this year, aunt Bessie to the rescue!

ISpyCobraKai · 23/12/2021 14:17

Tbf I'd probably get 3 portions from the £3.99 dish, not because I only eat tiny amounts of food, but if I was doing the whole dinner, there would be loads of other stuff on it.
I'm not doing the dinner at all though I fancy prawn cocktail which was always the starter when I was growing up, so I'll make one with a whole pack of prawns just for me, because I can Grin

Malbecfan · 23/12/2021 14:21

@Cherryblossoms85 I shredded the whole thing plus a massive cooking apple from our tree and an onion. I made layers of these then added the zest and juice of an orange, a glug of cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar and 200ml of cider that we made 2 years ago (and is quite bitter). I cooked it for an hour on high and turned it down. It filled the pot when I started but has reduced down quite a lot. I actually gave it a stir an hour ago. It smells really nice and is still purple. I need the apples to pulp a bit more but it's edible.

catgirl1976 · 23/12/2021 14:21

I buy it but then add port and pears and juniper berries

Stormwhale · 23/12/2021 14:23

I make it. It freezes well so if there is any left it doesn't go to waste. I don't have it with the Christmas Dinner though, just the boxing day leftovers dinner.

Iamkmackered1979 · 23/12/2021 14:24

Never heard of it? Or seen it in shops

SirChenjins · 23/12/2021 14:38

You might have seen it as braised red cabbage - it's sold every year along with the other side dishes

EerieSilence · 23/12/2021 14:42

Will do it in January for DD's birthday with roasted duck or goose. We all love it, even DD.

ISpyCobraKai · 23/12/2021 14:50

I saw a lot of decent looking "fancy", frozen veg this year, in I think Morrisons.
I considered buying some just for normal use as living on my own I find frozen veg a really good buy now.
