It's on ITV now
It's the best Xmas film.

It has everything. Love, friendship, Bruce Willis running around shooting people.
And don't get me started on Alan Rickman

YA all BVVU.
No-one has mentioned Bernard And The Genie yet...

DrSbaitso · 23/12/2021 11:35

I know someone beat me to it, but yippee-kay-ay, motherfucker!

Bollockstothat · 23/12/2021 12:31

I know (a) it was the 80s and (b) he was off his tits, but I've never understood how Harry could possibly have thought drinking mulled wine and eating aged brie in front of a roaring fire (in California) would be a good seduction plan - you'd barf your guts out and then pass out from heat exhaustion. But then I guess plans weren't his strong suit.

Obviously, you're completely right, OP - though Die Hard 2 is also excellent, mainly because absolutely every character in it, from the oily-buttocked villain to Bruce and Holly to the sweet little old lady who boasts about having tasered her own dog, is an absolutely fucking awful human being. Properly gets you into the Christmas spirit.

Mofohoho · 23/12/2021 12:53

I can't believe no-one's mentioned bad moms at christmas

dreamingbohemian · 23/12/2021 13:06

I wouldn't say Die Hard 2 is 'better', because it's way more dumb, but it's a great dumb film. Classic 80s cheesy action stupidity.

Seashell1234 · 23/12/2021 13:17

@minou123

Yay, I'm not the only one.

For me, the absolute best thing is Alan Rickman. Steals the whole film.

We saw it a couple of days ago. You are absolutely correct, it is an ace Christmas film. Almost entirely because of Alan Rickman. Swoons.
thegreenlight · 23/12/2021 13:28

Someone mentioned ‘love actually’. My now DH and I watched it at the cinema when we were about 18. We both said then that the film was disgusting and had nothing to do with love. Awful film that shows some women have a really depressing view of what ‘love’ is (never met a man who would admit to liking it). Die Hard, on the other hand, he rescues her WITH NO SHOES ON. That’s love. Even if it’s not enough to win her back in the long run!

JuergenSchwarzwald · 23/12/2021 13:29

I've never seen it although I have seen Die Hard 2 more than once.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 23/12/2021 13:29

Alan Rickman stole the show in Robin Hood as well. And Harry Potter. RIP - great actor.

There was a programme on the other night where Grace Dent talked about various shows that were on around Christmas 1991 and that was one of them. There was a very funny scene where he wishes for McDonalds ;) Not sure they would make that now with all the furore over advertising junk food. Product placement at its finest - and before it was legally permitted!
Bollockstothat · 23/12/2021 13:33

Juergen how can you have seen Die Hard 2 more than once but not have seen Die Hard at all?

Also, just remembered The Long Kiss Goodnight, which is another excellent Christmas action film (though not in the same class as Die Hard, obvs).

Yes. Yes it does.
Bruce shoots a terrorist in the bollocks and a little Jingle Bells tune plays.
What's not to love about that?
Puts me right in the Christmas spirit Grin

Yeah the power dynamics in love actually are well dodgy, one guy falls in love with his cleaner and the other - some kind of domestic/office help, obviously women in low paid jobs who do what they are told are very attractive

InTheCludgie · 23/12/2021 17:07

YABU to watch it on ITV, they cut the swear words out and dub over them with random ones!
But agree its a fab Xmas film

I guess we can continue the discussion about Die Hard being the best Christmas movie ever, as this thread wasn't being flagged as a possible Zombie thread either.
