Or is all wrapping paper rubbish this year?

I’ve bought loads from different places and it’s all been crap. Flimsy, so so thin, or alternatively creases horribly or stops sellotape sticking to it.
I like heavy duty brown paper generally but since I use this all the time for birthdays etc , the children think Santa would use something a bit more glam.
Where do you buy nice wrapping paper?
(Preferably in generous quantities so not individual sheets)

Yup, the choice this year is quite shitty.

I've bought rolls from Waitrose and M&S. I don't particularly like the designs.

Sunshineandrainbow · 20/12/2021 22:43

My fav one this year was From aldi.

AwkwardPaws27 · 20/12/2021 22:44

Dunelm Winter Solstice range - the woodland animal print one. I think its beautiful.

Justmuddlingalong · 20/12/2021 22:45

Mine was from the card factory. 🤷‍♀️
It's a decent thickness and not easily torn, so I'm quite happy with it.

HikingforScenery · 20/12/2021 22:45

I bought mine from Lidl. It stays crinkled so I know it’ can be recycled and it doesn’t tear easily or rips. The designs look nice too.

YANBU. I always buy WH Smith paper because I like the patterns and guidelines. This year they’ve improved its ‘green’ credentials by making it far too thin. I stuck my finger straight through it when measuring the paper. So annoying. Means I’ll need to find somewhere else to buy from once the rolls I’ve got are finished which is even more annoying.

I also wasted a lot of paper because instead of plastic wrap they’ve taped the rolls closed with thick tape which goes the whole way around so the entire outside of the roll can’t be used.

Sostrene Grene has some lovely ones as always, their ribbon is fabulous too and dirt cheap. How that store makes a profit with those prices I’ll never know.

uggmum · 20/12/2021 22:52

I bought some lovely brown paper from Paperchase. It has penguins, snowmen and Santa printed on it.

Sturdy but easy to use. The sellotape sticks to it.

I ran out so bought something similar from Sainsbury’s. The sellotape will not stick. I've bought 3 different brands. All my presents are pinging open!!

SpottedOnMN · 20/12/2021 23:06

We got beautiful wrapping paper from Aldi this year. Brown paper with Christmas trees or cute santas on it. Recyclable. Easy to cut. Looks great.

TheHoptimist · 20/12/2021 23:08

@Geneticsbunny

I am using secondhand headscarves scarves from local charity shops and eBay and scraps of fabric cut into squares. Apart from the stockings where I am using crap wrapping paper
Need a duvet for a bike
QueenOfHiraeth · 20/12/2021 23:09

I've given up on most shops and just buy it at Costco, really good stuff

WhoWillBuyThisWonderfulMorning · 20/12/2021 23:11

@Jazzyjeffery I bought the same. Awful stuff!! I spent 15 mins trying to get the stickers off and wasted some of the paper😒
The actual paper is ok but what a faff!!

HerRoyalNotness · 20/12/2021 23:11

Yes IKEA paper is good. I’m using plain brown paper with nice ribbons. I started stamping it too, with snowflakes, but then didn’t want to spend money on stamp pads.

You can make your brown paper special

SickAndTiredAgain · 20/12/2021 23:12

@Jazzyjeffery

I've got some utter shite from sainsburys habitat range. It's stuck with stickers round it rather than being plastic, fair enough, but oh my god it's so bastard hard to unwrap and leaves torn bits at edges from the stickers. Clearly the buyers never actually tried to use the stuff! Flimsy too. Will get something better next year.
DH and I were wrapping presents this evening and this is the paper we’ve got. Why is it like that???

The weird labels say something about “extra paper as backup” and have bizarre instructions about half peeling them and then cutting down along them, leaving you with a strip of paper with 5 labels stuck to it. No idea the supposed benefit of this.
It’s wrapping paper, I don’t know why they think they’re reinventing the wheel.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 20/12/2021 23:17

I got a couple of rolls in Primark, generic brown paper with white printed Christmas trees on. The children are zealous on the tape removal front, so it all goes in the recycle bin.

I have a pattern for some origami style fabric gift bags, and will be sewing them for next year instead.

Jazzyjeffery · 20/12/2021 23:18

@SickAndTiredAgain

Those instructions made no sense at all! Once we had unleashed the roll it looked like Edward scissor hands had been at it

Jules58 · 20/12/2021 23:18

I also brought mine from Sainsbury's, it's not a patch on last year's paper. It took me ages to get the sticky labels off to unroll it, which then tore a good chunk of paper which I couldn't use!

MrPoppysParka · 20/12/2021 23:25

This was my favourite paper this year. Co op! It did have those stupid stickers round it though…

Or is all wrapping paper rubbish this year?
Badnightguaranteed · 20/12/2021 23:29

I too was flummoxed by the extra backup paper Confused.
Some great recommendations here though. Going to try Costco and tomorrow. Thanks everyone!

After the year that DH bought this www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/748584/tesco-christmas-wrapping-paper - nah it's absolutely fine.

I'm still finding bastard glitter now.

Jesus, I remember that paper as my mother bought it and used it for her presents. I’ve moved house since but I reckon the glitter just followed me.
Ariela · 20/12/2021 23:59

I've bought cheap cotton Christmas fabric, and ribbon - we now will have reusable wrapping paper!
Well we will when I hem it.

Same problem with the stickers on the co-op wrapping paper. It's decent wrapping paper though, so it's just a question of the roll effectively being 10cm shorter than you expected.

My DM bought this. Grin My dad is a cheap skate and refused to buy new paper until it was all gone so my DM got her presents wrapped in pure glitter for years! Karma for buying it really.
User310 · 21/12/2021 03:50

I thought all of the wrapping paper has been crap this year too! I even think the patterns are rubbish. I ended up buying a few rolls from WHSmith in the end, it is very good quality so I’m happy.
