For my DD 5yr old - I am at a loss

Posting here for traffic.

My 5 Yr old DD wants a story book that has chapters for Christmas present. She wants a book she can read herself.

We have loads of books (three bookshelves full) but she has three older siblings, so I guess she wants something new that's been hers from the start. So not any that we already have.

She's a good reader. I no longer let her see my phone as I WhatsApp!

I am looking for a book with chapters that is not too advanced for her to read by herself, that she will enjoy reading. Not the usual 18/24/32etc page story books she gets from school. But I just can't think of any.

The hive of MNers are fantastic with solving riddles, chasing down perfumes name & brand unknown, finding no-longer available beloved toys/teddies.

This is not in the same league but I am hoping the MNer power will help me here.

The my little pony series from The Works is what I’ve just bought for my 6 year old.

Dick King-Smith's The Sheep Pig is just wonderful. Or Charlotte's Web is a fantastic story.

Flobbertybillop · 19/12/2021 10:39

@RaPumPumPumPum how spiteful. But yes, dress it up as a joke after the fact

Diary of a wimpy kid.

Brendabigbaps · 19/12/2021 10:47

Another vote for Isadora moon

Itsbeenalongwhile · 19/12/2021 12:25

Thank you so much, MNers. You are truly brilliant.
I have been researching all books mentioned here that we don't already have. Really great suggestions.
So grateful.

DD5 loves the Horrid Henry books

shouldistop · 19/12/2021 14:24

My 5yo loves the faraway tree series. He can't read it himself though Grin he's still on 3 or 4 letter words.
Good for your dd! X

bluesky45 · 19/12/2021 14:35

You could try the lotta series. My ds 4 liked the first one, although we read it to him. A bit more unusual so you might not already have them

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 19/12/2021 14:41

Dd6 is getting The wishing chair books for Xmas. I loved them and can't wait to borrow them from her when she's at school Grin Chapter stories and really nice.

Itsbeenalongwhile · 19/12/2021 17:20

I found the perfect book (or three) from the suggestions here Grin. Ordered. Arriving on Tuesday.

I will be going back to this thread again and again. Came to know about so many more books.

Once again, thank you everyone.

My 5 year old DD read "The magic faraway tree" to herself. A chapter a night. She absolutely loved it ❤

Usernamenotallowed · 19/12/2021 18:15

Billy and the mini monsters
Colour versions of famous five/secret seven/faraway tree/wishing chair.

The Gaskitt stories by Allan Ahlberg
Oliver moon
Mr Majeika

Bunnycat101 · 19/12/2021 18:17

Mummy fairy and me by Sophie kinsella. Very easy reading and reasonably enjoyable for me as well. My 5yo has managed well with these in a way that I don’t think she would have done with Dahl.

TempName01 · 19/12/2021 18:24

Amelia Fang is a lovely series of books

LostInTheColonies · 19/12/2021 18:35

What about the 13-Storey Treehouse? Not exactly chapters, but lots of fun. This was the book that changed DD from a child who could read into a reader (she devoured it, and hasn't looked back).

The 'Sophie' books are fabulous too.

flingoo · 19/12/2021 18:50

Isadora moon books are perfect for this age.
Also rainbow fairy series if she's into that

2bazookas · 19/12/2021 19:01

The Magic Faraway Tree

FanGirlX · 19/12/2021 19:04

Just came on to recommend the Faraway Tree and Worst Witch - they've been hits with a 5 and 6 year old little book room that I know 😀

LakieLady · 19/12/2021 19:19

At her age, I was reading Paddington, at 6 I loved the Arthur Ransome "Swallows and Amazons" books.

OhThatChicken · 19/12/2021 19:23

DD loved the Isadora Moon books at that age. DS loves Pirate Blunderbeard - in diary form rather than chapters but lots of illustrations and very funny.

CrabbyCat · 19/12/2021 20:37

Depending on how good a reader she is, the easiest chapter books I've found for DD are the Princess in Black series. The Isadora Moon ones she found harder, as are the Daisy Meadow fairy ones.

DeepaBeesKit · 19/12/2021 20:46

Sophie's snail

The owl who was afraid of the dark

Princess mirror belle

Dinosaur trouble

Don't underestimate the stamina involved in reading a full chapter book though. Is she yR or y1? Encourage her just to do one chapter at a time, read with her and talk to her about so you are clear she is taking in the story. If you can see she's flagging, offer to finish a bit reading to her etc. The last thing you want to do is put her off if it's a little bit of a struggle.

shewillhaveherway · 19/12/2021 20:56

Usborne do a range of fairytales, fables and myths that have padded covers. They are not a little child’s book but they have a good size font for little children and something like the Aesop’s Fables would be perfect. Lots of short stories that would read as a chapter book but without the pressure. There are different ones in the range aimed at different ages (the ones for younger children have fewer words, more illustrations etc) but they are something your child can read for many years. www.bookdepository.com/Illustrated-Fairy-Tales-Various/9780746075562?

Yes, I loved Swallows and Amazons and have a full set waiting for my dc when they’re old enough.
