For my DD 5yr old - I am at a loss

Posting here for traffic.

My 5 Yr old DD wants a story book that has chapters for Christmas present. She wants a book she can read herself.

We have loads of books (three bookshelves full) but she has three older siblings, so I guess she wants something new that's been hers from the start. So not any that we already have.

She's a good reader. I no longer let her see my phone as I WhatsApp!

I am looking for a book with chapters that is not too advanced for her to read by herself, that she will enjoy reading. Not the usual 18/24/32etc page story books she gets from school. But I just can't think of any.

The hive of MNers are fantastic with solving riddles, chasing down perfumes name & brand unknown, finding no-longer available beloved toys/teddies.

This is not in the same league but I am hoping the MNer power will help me here.

@RaPumPumPumPum I thought your post was really funny 😁

@RaPumPumPumPum

Well pardon me for making a joke on a Sunday morning, aren’t we sensitive today GrinGrin

But to give a proper answer to appease to perpetually offended - Isadora Moon books are great!

Jokes are meant to be funny Hmm

The Children of Noisy Village

My four year old loves being read the Milly Molly Mandy stories. Ottoline and the Yellow Cat was a big success recently too, and they are absolutely beautiful, a lovely present. Both of these are part of a series.

Maybe some of the Horrid Henry early reader boos, or some of the easier Roal Dahl ones.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 19/12/2021 09:08

The owl who is afraid of the dark. You can get this as a picture or chapter book.

@Buddrinker84, yes.. I think she wants to feel grown up.

There are some simplified versions of Famous Five books which are easy reads with short chapters. My son loves the 13 Storey Treehouse series but I can't remember how old he was when he started reading them, possibly more 6/7 reading age than 5.

The Magic Faraway Tree Collection - Six Adventure Book Set https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00SRG1UTY/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabc6V35666XFB86K1ECD0JX

My five year old is enjoying these. They have loads of pictures but are proper chapter books too so a great start!

boomboom1234 · 19/12/2021 09:11

My five year old also really loves these. There are a few in the range but she has found the early readers collection just right (she's in year 1)

Lots of great suggestions.
Looks like she may end up with more than one 'chapter book'.
Thank you, MNers.

From one of the links on here My Naughty Little Sister books popped up.

Anyone know if it is something a 5year can read by herself?

You could try the Pug books by Laura James - Pirate Pug, Cowboy Pug etc

PiglingBlonde · 19/12/2021 09:24

If she is into ballet, Darcy Bussell wrote some books for early readers about magic ballet shoes which my DD loved at about that age. They're basically retellings lf the ballet plots.

Toplowlight · 19/12/2021 09:24

The magical faraway tree books are very simple but have chapters.

The first chapter book I ever read was one of the Mary Plain books. I don’t know if you can still get them? I was an early reader too and read that before I had started school, so it must have been very simple.

Kinkybutkind · 19/12/2021 09:26

@BiddyPop

Are the Mrs Pepperpot books still in print?
Oh my goodness, wow! I loved those books and so did my (now 27/25) year old children. Thank you for the blast from the past happy memory.

I’ve no idea what books are good these days, but I hope you find some :)

Teenylittlefella · 19/12/2021 09:27

M and S do some simplified versions of the classics which my dd loved at that age. The secret garden and black beauty were big hits.
She loved lots of the other suggestions here too...princess mirror-belle (maybe a bit older for the chapter books?), The fairy series, etc

Deliaskis · 19/12/2021 09:30

At this age DD loved the Rainbow Fairy books, and also Claude.

Wetcappuccino · 19/12/2021 09:33

Rabbit and Bear series, Esio Trot, The Magic Finger, Matilda, The Twits, Grimwood… I will try and think of more!

anotherneutralname · 19/12/2021 09:36

I think "my naughty little sister" might not be a hit OP, just because she's the youngest so may not find it as funny?

Another vote for the Claude books here.

3wheels · 19/12/2021 09:37

Another vote for the Rabbit and Bear books, also Wigglesbottom primary school books are great too.

BobbieT1999 · 19/12/2021 09:37

I had My Naughty Little Sister! I don't remember how old I was when I got it but 5/6 sounds about right.

I'd forgotten about that book Smile

mogschristmascalamity · 19/12/2021 09:40

The princess in black series is great. 7yo super reader DD still rereads them now. (Not a stealth boast)
