For my DD 5yr old - I am at a loss

Posting here for traffic.

My 5 Yr old DD wants a story book that has chapters for Christmas present. She wants a book she can read herself.

We have loads of books (three bookshelves full) but she has three older siblings, so I guess she wants something new that's been hers from the start. So not any that we already have.

She's a good reader. I no longer let her see my phone as I WhatsApp!

I am looking for a book with chapters that is not too advanced for her to read by herself, that she will enjoy reading. Not the usual 18/24/32etc page story books she gets from school. But I just can't think of any.

The hive of MNers are fantastic with solving riddles, chasing down perfumes name & brand unknown, finding no-longer available beloved toys/teddies.

This is not in the same league but I am hoping the MNer power will help me here.

The ‘Daisy and the trouble with’ series by Kes Gray.

BiddyPop · 19/12/2021 08:59

Are the Mrs Pepperpot books still in print?

ddl1 · 19/12/2021 08:59

One of Joyce Lankester Brisley's classic Milly-Molly-Mandy books, if she doesn't already have them.

One of Atinuke's 'Anna Hibiscus' books.

My daughter really liked these books, they are american so there are the obvious spelling differences, but they are quite funny.

Mammoth Academy and The Worst Witch were big hits at that age for my dd, as they had a picture on each double page despite being chapter books. She was a bit intimidated by a whole double page of text, even though she could read it.

Buddrinker84 · 19/12/2021 09:00

Have you looked at the dog man books. They are more like comic strips, quite thick books so make them feel very grown up. My 6 year old isn't great at reading but absolutely loves them.

SpongebobNoPants · 19/12/2021 09:01

The Amelia Jane books too, my DD read them by herself at 5. Super cute stories about a naughty rag doll who causes mayhem for the other toys,

emsmum79 · 19/12/2021 09:03

Claude series
Hotel Flamingo series
The Pirates next door chapter book series

Della1 · 19/12/2021 09:03

I agree with ‘Daisy and the trouble with’ by Kes Gray.

JisForJellyfish · 19/12/2021 09:03

A 5 year old reading is hardly boasting!
What about enid blyton? As well as her more famous stories, she has a lot of collections short stories which are lovely but not one continuous story. The enid blyton short stories are my favourite though.
Sophie mouse? Rainbow magic is popular with that age group but you may already have them, so I'm trying to think of less well known ones.
My newly turned 6 year old is working her way through the worst witch books at the moment, but again suspect that's one you already have!

Mud puddle farm books are great - have some pictures in too and not too long
Daisy and the trouble with series
Flat Stanley?
The Worst Witch

APipkinOfPepper · 19/12/2021 09:04

Also try books by Jeremy Strong

cliffdiver · 19/12/2021 09:04

@festivefuschias

The ‘Daisy and the trouble with’ series by Kes Gray.
Also came on to day these books.

DD2 started reading them when she was 6, and adored them.

scully29 · 19/12/2021 09:04

Daisy Meadows. Unicorn Magic or any Daisy Meadows if you havent already, but theres so so many you wont have read them all! They are genius for that age.

livinthedream1995 · 19/12/2021 09:05

My 6yo is pretty into diary of a wimpy kid. Bits of the content go over his head, but overall he enjoys it.

PintOfBovril · 19/12/2021 09:05

The Teddy Robinson books? Or Milly Molly Mandy?

scully29 · 19/12/2021 09:05

Or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, thats the first chapter book we started with.

Itsbeenalongwhile · 19/12/2021 09:05

Thank you so much, everyone. Lots of suggestions. I appreciate this.
We have The faraway tree series and The worst witch series.
But most of the rest suggested, we don't have.
I will start looking right away.

A PP asked what does she like/what is she into.... Nothing in particular. She just loves a good story.
Really appreciate the suggestions.

Those rainbow fairy books? Might not just be rainbows.

Bimblybomeyelash · 19/12/2021 09:06

At that age my eldest loved the dog man books.

My youngest, now 5, is currently enjoying this book series home.oxfordowl.co.uk/bookshop/kitty/
