I object to my son being given reading books about drunk horses

He is five years old and reading stage 6 of the Oxford Reading Tree. He was given an ORT book called Rotten apples. Its about a horse which gets drunk by eating rotten apples.

My son has no concept of what it means to be drunk. He leads a sheltered life and for the time being I want to keep it that way.

I wrote in his reading record that I felt that the book he was given was not age approipate. His teacher has written back that it is impossible to know whether reading books that are sent home are age appriopate or not.

Personally I think this is bollox.

allIWannaBeForChristmas · 19/12/2007 18:08

so actually, the thread title should have been "am I unreasonable to boast about the fact my child is reading stage 6 already?" . and funny how op hasn't returned?

WanderingHolly · 19/12/2007 18:08

Welease Woderwick!

FrannyandZooey · 19/12/2007 18:08

RT, you are being veeeeeeeeeeery precious about this. Have a drink ....

I've got a great book for my three year old about a mole who discovers there's a turd on his head, so goes round all the animals demanding to know who did it!

Can I lend it you?

WanderingHolly · 19/12/2007 18:11

I love that book!

TenLordsaLapin · 19/12/2007 18:12

I've got a book about a potty. It has pictures and EVERYTHING

Desiderata · 19/12/2007 18:16

Oh! Does it show ... bottoms?

3JinglesandnoBells · 19/12/2007 18:18

Lol, Desi, we got that book...twice...but both versions are german that book is so funny!

TenLordsaLapin · 19/12/2007 18:19

Yes, bottoms! And they are being shown to an entirely innocent and blameless bunny rabbit!

FrannyandZooey · 19/12/2007 18:20

We have one of those Usborne books about Romans, and it shows a huge crowd at the baths

it really really annoys me the meticulous effort the artist has gone to, to make sure each person's arm / leg etc is positioned in such a way that you don't see any willies

it's LUDICROUS

these are cartoon people about 1 cm high

my god can you imagine the HORROR of a child seeing a very very small flaccid cartoon willy - civilisation would crumble

ffs it is stupid

TenLordsaLapin · 19/12/2007 18:21

Oh my god they are everywhere!

ahundredtimes · 19/12/2007 18:21

That In the MIdnight Kitchen book has a willie in it. It has been much commented on here.

constancereader · 19/12/2007 18:21

That mole book was my absolute favourite to read to my class Desiderata.

I thought the OP was having us on.

I love that Maurice Sendak willy

it is very nice indeed

FrannyandZooey · 19/12/2007 18:23

LOL cod I don't do much as it is

at least I could do it in your kitchen looking at your giant cupcake photos

ahundredtimes · 19/12/2007 18:23

You'd spend all your time putting make-up on each other. Franny will drop melon seeds on the floor, and then Cod'll run about with her lady-hoover thing and snap them up.

You'd get on famously I expect.

I am wearing a ludicrous skirt actually - I got it from eBay and the front was so nice (albeit very unusual) in a vintage 70s fabric

when it arrived the back (not pictured) is COMPLETELY insane

it has giant red poppies all over it and all sorts of random squiggles

dp says he is scared of it
