I object to my son being given reading books about drunk horses

He is five years old and reading stage 6 of the Oxford Reading Tree. He was given an ORT book called Rotten apples. Its about a horse which gets drunk by eating rotten apples.

My son has no concept of what it means to be drunk. He leads a sheltered life and for the time being I want to keep it that way.

I wrote in his reading record that I felt that the book he was given was not age approipate. His teacher has written back that it is impossible to know whether reading books that are sent home are age appriopate or not.

Personally I think this is bollox.

well the swan stuck a man to his tail because the man tried to "get" him from under the arm of the hero, then an old woman got stuck, then a big girl, then a small boy and finally a black dog.

It made the sad princess laugh though

I think the OP needs to lighten up a bit.

There's a difference between not wanting your dc to grow up to quick and not wanting them to grow up at all.

Learning to recognise when someone is drunk could be a useful survival skill one day.

Actually I kind of agree with the OP - not that I think it's morally dubious or anything, but that it's an odd storyline that is baffling to many little children. When DS1 read this book he was still 4 and the concepts of fermentation and drunkenness both went over his head. I mentioned it, jokingly, to his teacher (she had brought up the issue of relatively advanced readers meeting inappropriate material)and she said "He's lucky. I've taught plenty of 4 year olds who knew only too well what drunk meant" .

I still love this title

I think it may be my favourite title ever: it has everything, outrage, surrealism, and a pop at teachers into the bargain

bananaknickers · 19/12/2007 17:59

This isn't the same poster as the chocolate poisongate last week is it? You are having us on right?

Actually joking aside I remember the books about burglars. I had to explain at the time what that was and it felt uncomfortable.

well...I just realised that ms, who is in reception, must be as thick as his older brother...he is only at stage 1+ and only on the 3. book in that series...and I thought he was doing rather well....my illusions have been shattered, or should that be delusions, lol....

3JinglesandnoBells · 19/12/2007 18:04

I thought the W stood for what one would call a man who gives themselfs pleasure....lol

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 19/12/2007 18:05

FrannyandZooey · 19/12/2007 18:05

cod that is a shame, I would love him to go to a really nice school, that would be my top outcome

3JinglesandnoBells · 19/12/2007 18:06

so, hatrick, really the OP just wanted to be able to mention that her child is g&t without really looking like being smug...

pinetreedog · 19/12/2007 18:06

FrannyandZooey · 19/12/2007 18:06
