The big anti-Covid pass protest tomorrow in London

User135644 · 17/12/2021 22:06

AIBU or is this really not helpful to have them all gathering in the middle of London? It's the new epicentre of Covid while the virus peaks to previously unseen levels case wise. They're protesting against any new restrictions yet their actions tomorrow will make restrictions more likely.

I accept their right to protest but think it's unhelpful at this juncture, especially a week before Christmas. No doubt people bused in from around the country who'll then spread it back to their own home town.

Not to mention a lot of these people will be unvaccinated which puts the hospitals under more strain if it turns into a superspreader event. These Saturday protest jollies in London are always filled with anti-vax speakers, posters and paraphernalia.

WE'LL BE ASKED TO SHOW PAPERS AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.

🤣

Porcupineintherough · 18/12/2021 09:55

More anti vaxxer protests = more anti vaxxers w COVID = increased anti vaxxer immunity + less anti vaxxers over all

Short term pain for long term gain

Porcupineintherough · 18/12/2021 09:55

Sorry - fewer antivaxxers altogether

Kshhuxnxk · 18/12/2021 10:05

I see your point but ultimately it in a fair and just society everyone has the right to protest. Be very careful about wanting to remove our liberties one day it might affect your right to choose.

ExtraOnion · 18/12/2021 10:18

90% of the people currently needing intensive care are unvaccinated. There are 5 million unvaccinated people. I am guessing a large number of people at the protest are unvaccinated, the NHS is already busy … imagine what a big influx of the unvaccinated will do.

When will people understand that this isn’t about YOU. Nobody (other than your loved ones) is interested in you. This is about other people like; those who can’t get surgery because ICU is full, those who can’t be provided with services due to COVID sick leave, those who won’t get services due to long COVID.

It’s people’s “right” to go the pub and not prove you are vaccinated - grow up.. I’m more concerned that these places stay open and people are kept in work. It’s an “assault on our civil liberties” ..really? Been protesting about the other much more restrictive Acts that have just gone through?

This is all “look at me … I’m so much more aware than you” nonsense.

Grow up, realise you are part of a society and have responsibility to the others in that society - again, it’s not about you.

Maireas · 18/12/2021 10:27

What was it Professor Whitty said? You don't take risks for yourself, your personal risks impact others.

Maireas · 18/12/2021 10:28

@milly74

Thank goodness, people rising and standing up against this attack on our liberties and freedoms. You should be applauding them.
I think the key concept of "liberty" is misunderstood here. It's to enable people to go out and get on with life.
RuggerHug · 18/12/2021 10:33

It is OPPRESSION! I will no longer be entitled to eat indoors in a Nandos. I will be RESTRICTED to only take away, delivery DIRECTLY TO MY HOME or the ability to purchase the ingredients MYSELF or have them brought DIRECTLY TO ME to make my lemon and herb chicken MYSELF. Worse that the fuckin blitz it is. Why on earth should I not be allowed be an extra risk to the staff INDOORS. Fweedom etc.

The 90% figure has long been discredited. it's 36% and not needing intensive care but of those needing care with covid 36% are unvaccinated. Considering those who are double vaccinated are not routinely tested for covid anymore I'd say that statistic tells us absolutely fuck all about the efficacy of vaccinations. Lies, damn lies and statistics springs to mind.
User135644 · 18/12/2021 10:50

t's 36% and not needing intensive care but of those needing care with covid 36% are unvaccinated.

90% figure was always ridiculous but 36% adds a huge burden on the hospitals and is more than a third of people, the majority of them would likely not need treatment if they'd have just had the jab.

As an example, a third of Londoners are unvaccinated.

hedgehogger1 · 18/12/2021 10:51

If people just fucking well got vaccinated there would be a lot less folk in hospital and we wouldn't be in this stupid situation

Maireas · 18/12/2021 11:03

It's a shame there isn't a vaccine against stupidity. Mind you, Piers Corbyn would be on his fifth booster.

middleager · 18/12/2021 11:05

I was out yesterday and needed to show my pass. I quickly waved my phone with the pass at the bouncer, as did DH and the bouncer barely glanced. I have previously done this twice with a printed version. No scans, just a brief nod off the doormen.

Guessing those opposed to vaccines/passes could easily get hold of a mate's pass, do a screenshot or printout. Therefore, the carrot/stick of a pass that enables them to access everyday activities, isn't so enticing if they can be copied.
Same with negative LFTs. You could ask any member of your house to take one for you.
So many workarounds, so not sure the orotestors will be motivated by the pass equals access argument.

DH is going. It isn't a jolly to use your words, op. I support his right to protest and glad some of you can understand why he is going. Obviously not you op!!

Considering there's big football matches and lots of people being compressed into small spaces on trains etc. I am not at all bothered about him being in an open space where he is free to move around.

MN husband's are the least attractive sub set of people ever. Overgrown sixth form lefties crying if they miss a day at the zoo, tugging their kids round on stupid tenty trailers and generally having no gumption at all. The YouTube man summed it up so well Grin

Nanny0gg · 18/12/2021 11:40

@Twillow

Excuse my ignorance *@PestoSugarPlumFairy* but I don't really understand how vaccine passports are an assault on our liberties? What is the thinking there? Doesn't it give people more freedom to go out?
Only if you're vaccinated...

I certainly don't understand.

At this rate it will never be over

I agree middleager, it only works as well as enforced. Here it's scanned and ID checked. They haven't brought it in but if they did what happens when you don't check ID for cigarettes or alcohol it would focus people. Eg if it's not checked properly fine and the alcohol licence pulled.
logsonlogsoff · 18/12/2021 11:49

Bunch of unvaccinated people want to get together in a big grp in an Omicron hotspot to protest about being ‘forced’ to vaccinate. Let them crack on with it - perhaps the consequences will help them decide to actually get jabbed.

logsonlogsoff · 18/12/2021 11:51

He absolutely has the right ‘protest’ doesn’t mean that millions of people won’t think he’s an absolute tho. ‘

Emilyontmoor · 18/12/2021 12:19

Draggondragon Have you witnessed these protests because the demographic you describe is not the majority. The majority are men 18-50 dressed in black or combats seething with barely suppressed resentment, loving the excuse to be angry together and shout at any passer by wearing a mask (especially if they are a woman). I’d guess right rather than lefty if they could get their brain cells around any ideology they were not force fed on the Internet. On one occasion I encountered them marching past Buckingham Palace, no idea why, she wasn’t there, and wouldn’t have been amused if she was, but I doubt they knew either. They had finished the March to Parliament Square and presumably they felt had to keep the jolly (and six packs - many were drunk by then) going. They went up to Hyde Park Corner and then all turned up back in Victoria like headless chickens. I pity any Mumsnetters married to one

Merrymerry2 · 18/12/2021 13:01

. Some of you don't have social lives and it shows.
@Pedalpushers I can't work out if you are genuine or not but that sentence is the epitome of everything people who don't understand what is going on with our freedom and why DH is protesting.

I'm relieved some people get it. People need to start pushing back rather than just trusting this government is acting in our interest. They aren't!!

Booklover3 · 18/12/2021 13:17

Good. I hope it goes well for them.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 18/12/2021 13:33

@PestoSugarPlumFairy

People have had enough of this inept government and their make-it-up-as-we-go-along/Do-as-we-say-not-as-we-do rules. Vaccine passports are a huge assault on our liberties, so good for them for making a stand.
Nonsense! They are the only way of stopping germ riddled anti vax , covidiots from spreading their disgusting germs to people who are socially responsible enough to get the vaccine. If they don't like it, they can buy their own island and make their own rules
ExtraOnion · 18/12/2021 13:48

@Aishah231 … discredited by whom ? Everting I’ve seen, from the NHS, in the last few days , backs up the statement that a vast majority of those needing intensive care are unvaccinated.

I wonder how it can be “long discredited” with this current spike being so recent

Obviously, we shouldn’t be listening to those who actually work on the front line …. Maybe Piers Corbyn, Right Said Fred, or Laurence Fox have some information nobody else has

ExtraOnion · 18/12/2021 13:53

“Vaccine passports are a huge assault on out civil liberties” - I am still struggling to understand this one.

You have no rights, or obligations to go to a pub, theatre or football match etc
You are afforded entry to these places because you meet certain criteria.
If you don’t meet this criteria you can’t participate. One of the criteria is proof of vaccination or COVID free status .
If you choose not to meet the conditions of entry, then you don’t enter.

If you don’t like it … go somewhere else….

Some people need to find better things to do with their time .. maybe her a vaccine
