I'm wondering...what did you do with your wedding/engagement ring after divorce?

OP posts:
CathyorClaire · 16/12/2021 20:33

Sell it.

If you CBA to do that, donate it to charity so it does more good than it will in landfill.

PermanentTemporary · 16/12/2021 20:33

I got the engagement ring, which I loved, made smaller to fit my little finger. Not sure what happened to the wedding ring.

If it was too obviously engagementy to wear in that way, you'd better believe I would have sold it and gone for cocktails with the proceeds.

Sportsnight · 16/12/2021 20:35

As the mantra goes: reduce, reuse, recycle. Don’t put it in the bin!

Matilda1981 · 16/12/2021 20:35

My ex husband raided my parents house when he knew I wasn’t going to be in (as I’d moved back there when we split up) and stole it!!! God knows what he didn’t with it - prob sold it!

mogschristmascalamity · 16/12/2021 20:38

Keep it for 25 years then when you get your next engagment ring (which you hate) remododelled to celebrate 10 years of marriage use the gold and diamond to do this. Also add in the gold from your mums wedding ring to your abusive father and use a jeweller who does meltdown videos on tiktok.

Yes its whats happening. Quite excited to get my new (old) ring.

ImmutableSexQueen · 16/12/2021 20:38

Kept it. Had it made into earrings and a pendant for daughter when she grew up.

I gave him cuff-links. He left them behind when I told him to go to his girlfriend. I sold them and used the money for food.

BeardyButton · 16/12/2021 20:39

@MrsSkylerWhite

Yes, YA.

Completely understand why you want to be shot of it.

Please remember though that someone far less privileged than you excavated what you are wanting to discard (you must be if you’re seriously considering throwing it away). It’s also a finite resource, needed for all sorts of engineering applications.

Please, sell it and donate to an appropriate charity, perhaps one based in DRifCongo, Botswana or Sierra Leone. (There are larger producers but their people are not so ill-treated in pursuit).

Sorry if I sound pious. Just one of my personal bug bares. Too many privileged people have no idea of the history of what they parade.

Have you looked into the stuff in your laptop and mobile phone?!? Diamonds are a bit of a red herring, really.
SequinnedShawl · 16/12/2021 20:41

Had mine remodelled for my daughter.

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/12/2021 20:44

Sold it along with my eternity ring and both our wedding rings, he left his next to the bed when he fucked off with OW. I bought myself a stack of Pandora rings to wear on my middle finger and I treated both children with the rest.

Is this serious @sweetpopcorn86?

You'd actually consider throwing it away?

I work in Hatton Garden. Gold scrap is reasonable at the moment, Platinum not so much. Shops tend not to give an awful lot for diamonds - unless it was something amazing so you might be better off selling privately.

OnTheBoardwalk · 16/12/2021 20:52

If you sell it you'll get very little back compared to what it was purchased for

Maybe give it to charity, as PP have said one that would annoy your ex, and let them resell it at a more retail price?

BlowDryRat · 16/12/2021 20:55

I sold it and bought food for me and the DC, given that child maintenance wasn't forthcoming.

rwalker · 16/12/2021 20:56

DW wears her from 1st marriage as just a ring . Asked my opinion I couldn't careless it's a ring .

She wears it because she likes it not because of what it was.

IAAP · 16/12/2021 21:00

I'll give it to my daughter

Dogscanteatonions · 16/12/2021 21:08

Sold it to buy Xmas presents for our kids when I was dead poor and exh getting away with paying zero maintenance as self employed yet living a very good lifestyle.

CantThinkOfaUserNameAgain · 16/12/2021 21:08

Sold his ring (he oniy ever wore it for 2 weeks) and mine and took the kids to New York 😂😂

Figgyboa · 16/12/2021 21:09

I pawned mine. Didn't get much, couple of hundreds, but it wasn't about the money for me. Spent the money on a nice handbag

edification · 16/12/2021 21:12

Please don't bin it! Give it to a charity or a worthy cause or a family member... Such a waste!!!!

MousesBack · 16/12/2021 21:16

I gave mine to my daughter. She, like the ring, is a product of that union - and she's lovely! The marriage didn't work out but the babymaking we did together was top-notch.

cookiemonster2468 · 16/12/2021 21:20

I think they have very low resale value (no one wants a "used" engagement ring from a relationship that didn't work out), so the options are to sell it for less than it's worth, give it away or throw it away.

I'd probably sell it and accept you won't get anywhere near what was paid for it.

Toplowlight · 16/12/2021 21:28

Why would you throw it away?! Sell it or give it away if you don’t want to keep it.

CommonRoom · 16/12/2021 21:31

@HolidayTime2021

If they refuse.-A work colleague brought hers in and tried to give it away
I called Oxfam- they sent a courier (she was very rich and from a very well known family)

Eh, what?

sorry, bold fail.

If they refuse what? Bring it in where?
Oxfam send couriers if it's a well known family? Really? Oxfam pay for a courier to collect second hand things? Who are the 'well known families?' do Oxfam have a list of them by the phone so they can decide whether to use their courier service?

I can't make head nor tail of this

santasmuma · 16/12/2021 21:41

@lisaandalan

Why an earth would you throw money away.

Mine were not worth anything, we got them in Argos - I chucked them in the bin at McDonald's the day I decided I was going home to end it.
