To think we should move Christmas to a different month?

Christmas and all it’s super-spreading events seems to come smack-bang in the middle of Covid and flu season.

Since covid and it’s ever-changing variants appear to be here for good would it not make sense to rearrange Christmas dates?

Perhaps March or April instead.

OP posts:
xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 18:58

you wont be 'working around the virus' though

what will happen is no bugger organising christmas events in june/july will trust the British weather and everyone will be crammed indoors in function rooms and pubs having get togethers there instead

butterpuffed · 16/12/2021 19:00

OP, did you just want to change Christmas Day for the UK , or are you after a global change Grin

Whatthechicken · 16/12/2021 19:00

Mess with Christmas and you’ll piss the Robins off. I don’t think their bright red breasts would have such appeal on Christmas cards if the background was alive with summer colour, instead of the sheet white back drops they are used to. A visiting spring bird will steel the limelight instead. The Robins will unionise and then a whole can of worms will be opened!

Blossom64265 · 16/12/2021 19:02

@gofg

I will be honest and admit I don’t understand why people in the Southern Hemisphere celebrate Christmas in December. It would make much more sense to do it in June.

Don't be ridiculous! Christmas is celebrated at the same time worldwide - how would anyone remember when it was if different countries celebrated at different times? Imagine having to mark your diary to remember to send a card to Aunt Betty in June because she lives in Fiji? Also, has it not occured to you that those of us in the Southern Hempishere might not want Christmas in winter? I certainly don't.

But Christmas is just what one culture happens to call the winter solstice. Celebrating the winter solstice in Europe in middle of the summer when in Australia or South America is just silly. I do understand that people take their culture as they move around the globe, so I am exaggerating a bit, but I hope you can understand the point I am trying to make
Offmyfence · 16/12/2021 19:07

Funniest thing I've ever read and you're arguing the point!

So what about people on Australia, should they move it too?

You say March or April, what about Easter? Do we combine the two religious festivals?

Offmyfence · 16/12/2021 19:08

@Allandria

Why does it HAVE to be in December?

If it’s going to aggravate the situation with flu and covid every year with parties, work dos, big family gatherings and so on then it makes it perfect sense to change the date to a few months later. People would get used to it.

Why does it HAVE to be in December..... now let me think 🤔!
grapewine · 16/12/2021 19:08

This wins the internet for batshittery. Well done, OP. It's a high bar.

GaolBhoAlba · 16/12/2021 19:09

fs 🥴🤣

Bollindger · 16/12/2021 19:09

You want to move Jesus's Birthday, for your own comfort,,, NICE.

LittleBabyCheeses · 16/12/2021 19:09

If we moved it to June, would we have a transition year with 2 Christmas’s, or would we wait 18 months for the next one? What would we do to stop people celebrating it on December 25th going forward? Ban the sale of turkeys at that time? Ban people booking large gatherings in the month of December?

Theunamedcat · 16/12/2021 19:10

@Opus17

Why does it has to be December? Cause it's Jesus' birthday...

We can't just move birthdays to suit us...

But the Queen has two so there is a precedent technically for him to have an "official" birthday at another more favorable time of year 🤔
FanFckingTastic · 16/12/2021 19:11

OP if you move Christmas to March or April then it will potentially be at the same time as Easter. Would you propose having all of the bank holidays for Christmas day, Boxing day, Good Friday and Easter Monday lumped together to make one big Christian-holiday-fest?

What about new years eve? Should we say balls to that too as it's a winter celebration? Maybe we should move that to June??

Bonkers!

gofg · 16/12/2021 19:11

xmas tree's aren't harvested in the summer....turkeys aren't fattened up and reared in summer months...its not dark til 10 so kids won't see any xmas lights....theres no 2 week school holidays in June......mulled wine and gingerbread lattes wont taste the same in the summer heat.....chocolate coins will all melt

I'm sitting here in summer - and guess what, we do have Christmas trees, and turkey for Christmas dinner, and kids do see the Christmas lights (it doesn't hurt them to stay up late once in a while, in fact it's all part of the fun), and chocolate coins don't all melt!

I agree that the OP's suggestion is ridiculous however, and I don't want to be celebrating Christmas in winter!!

CaMePlaitPas · 16/12/2021 19:12

OK OP, you've had your five minutes, time to go back to sleep now.

Jacketpotato84 · 16/12/2021 19:12

Would you move your birthday if you didn't like the weather at that time?
Ludicrous

LuckyAmy1986 · 16/12/2021 19:12

@GutsInMay I just don’t understand why so many people have cited the religious reason for the fixed date. Easter moves around by almost a month

Easter “moves around” for a reason Hmm

Nayday · 16/12/2021 19:13

Great idea. Let's move Winter Solstice along with it too - rubbish having the longest night to coincide with flu bugs and things, poor timing.

Or come to think if it...we could just move flu?

Heathofhares · 16/12/2021 19:14

@EasterIssland

Yes I think it’s a good idea. I’ll take Maria to keep baby Jesus in for a few more weeks to suit covid
Christmas was originally celebrated in December as the church wanted to fit in with the pre christian festivals traditions of Yule and Saturnila which were both in December.

Historians generally put the birth of Jesus around March as that is when the shepherds might have been out in the hills with their flocks. Perhaps OP could use this to move Christmas?

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 19:14

yeah you might @gofg but what about the rest of the world??

HolidayTime2021 · 16/12/2021 19:14

Its 1 day!

Nayday · 16/12/2021 19:16

Flu would be much better in August actually. It's a very overrated month in the UK, rubbish weather, bored of the holidays - perfect timing for Flu & Colds. You'd barely notice it with hay fever.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 16/12/2021 19:16

It was more likely that Jesus was born in august than December any way

Snugglepumpkin · 16/12/2021 19:16

Why don't you downplay your own Christmas & make a much bigger celebration at Easter instead?

gofg · 16/12/2021 19:18

But Christmas is just what one culture happens to call the winter solstice. Celebrating the winter solstice in Europe in middle of the summer when in Australia or South America is just silly. I do understand that people take their culture as they move around the globe, so I am exaggerating a bit, but I hope you can understand the point I am trying to make

What an arrogant post! We don't celebrate the winter solstice (well some do, but not the majority) in the Southern Hemisphere, and forgive me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that Christmas was to celebrate the birth of Christ, and that's what we do here. Funnily enough we like to do it at the same time as the rest of the world.
