To think we should move Christmas to a different month?

Christmas and all it’s super-spreading events seems to come smack-bang in the middle of Covid and flu season.

Since covid and it’s ever-changing variants appear to be here for good would it not make sense to rearrange Christmas dates?

Perhaps March or April instead.

You do know why Christmas is on the 25th December don't you?

NameChanged15729 · 16/12/2021 18:04

Not everybody wants to live the rest of there life fearing Covid. So nope! Christmas should not change and the people who are uncomfortable with mixing can isolate themselves Smile

ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 16/12/2021 18:05

Noone is forcing you to celebrate Christmas in December. If you want an April christmas, fill your boots.

Life is shit enough for everyone and they like a little light in their lives in the bleak winter though.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 16/12/2021 18:05

nah nobody will go for that

snow covered everything wont cut it in spring/summer

Cattitudes · 16/12/2021 18:05

I think many scholars think Jesus was probably actually born in the Spring or Summer so why not! Would still want something mid winter to cheer up the cold and gloomy nights.

Vapeyvapevape · 16/12/2021 18:06

You can’t move Christmas! It would cock up all the Christmas carols - In the Bleak Midwinter, Good King Wenceslas etc

EllieSattler · 16/12/2021 18:06

The Christians piggybacked Christmas onto Yule and Saturnalia, pagan festivals marking the bleak midwinter. The whole point of the festival is that its dark and miserable. You move Christian Christmas to June or whenever but I'm putting my lights out when it's dark at 4pm.

Allandria · 16/12/2021 18:06

If it will reduce covid and flu numbers and take strain off the NHS every year then I can’t see a stronger argument to keep it in dec

Do you know what Christmas is and why it's on the 25th December??

And were you arguing for this over the past decades of awful winters in the NHS?
FrippEnos · 16/12/2021 18:08

So we should move a break for viruses because its in the middle of virus season?

SnowyPetals · 16/12/2021 18:08

@Allandria

I get that Christmas is one of the uplifting aspects of wintertime and I love it but unfortunately it just doesn’t combine well with flu-covid season at all. Look at what happened after last Christmas when people were allowed to mix. It’s just a recipe for disaster every year now, the festival and the allocated time of year just aren’t compatible. I agree it’s a massive shame but it’s just the way it is.
But it isn't "the way it is", is it? Because covid will fade and Christmas ain't moving!
LittleBabyCheeses · 16/12/2021 18:09

You say this as though the ‘powers that be’ are just going to say ‘yeah you know what, @Allandria is right. Christmas is the 25th of June now people!’ Grin

nosyupnorth · 16/12/2021 18:09

I can 1up your genius idea... if covid is worse in Jan/Feb/March and winter... why don't we just move those months to the summer!

ThrobbingToothacheOfTheMind · 16/12/2021 18:10

It will make the yearly winter flu and covid situation way better

Sources?

XenoBitch · 16/12/2021 18:10

This has to be one of the mot batshit things I have seen on MN lately.

I might petition to have my birthday changed too.

lockdownalli · 16/12/2021 18:11

If we were to change it, it should be September, as that is when historians think Jesus was actually born.

Maybe a pre going back to school festival would be nice?

Or we could leave it where it is and has been for many years as a winter pagan celebration?

Or can we have both?? Xmas Grin

GutsInMay · 16/12/2021 18:11

@LuckyAmy1986

Do you know what Christmas is and why it's on the 25th December??
It’s a mystery really given that what evidence there is suggests that Christ was not born in December.

Why do YOU think it is on Dec 25th?

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 16/12/2021 18:12

Christmas has been a thing for thousands of years.

No we can’t move it because there’s a bit of flu going around.🙄🙄

I have a summer birthday, I'm moving it to December if Christmas shifts.

Maybe we should move Christmas a bit every year, like Ramadan, so that nobody has a Christmas birthday every year. Share the pain evenly.

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/12/2021 18:12

No, because I can’t sing ‘in the bleak mid winter’ in the summer, can I?

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 16/12/2021 18:13

I thought it was tongue in cheek.

It’s so funny

You could of course not bother celebrating it at all.

Your suggestion is ridiculous.

Redglitter · 16/12/2021 18:13

This has to be a wind up 😂😂

Thatsplentyjack · 16/12/2021 18:13

No, my life has been fucked enough because of fucking covid so you can fuck off with that suggestion. Bloody ridiculous suggestion anyway, no matter how much you protest that it makes perfect sense.
